When my nephew was about 8, there was a kid in his class (you know the type - snot-nosed little squirt with a big mouth from day one) and he use to pick on my nephew. My nephew was bigger than him but didnt know how to deal with it and my SIL tried calling the mother, talking to a teacher, even trying to get my nephew to use 'words instead of his hands' but the kid still picked on him. She finally told him to just belt the kid - and he did! The kid NEVER bothered him again (Sorry but LOL!!!) and that mother was now calling my SIL and she said, I tried to talk to you about it before it got to this, too bad. I have to say that seeing my 8 yo nephew have to deal with that was not cool at all, it was very upsetting to him as a kid. So although I am not a believer that hitting someone is OK in most cases, I have to admit, it seems like in this situation, it was all that got results.

I have never hit someone, but would without hesitating if it were a matter of self defense.

I''ve been in a few fights. I''ve never been one to start a physical fight. Usually I was coming to the aid of my friend with a big mouth and nothing to backit up with. I''m certainly not going to stand by and watch one of my friends get hurt.

I see people who hit as having no self control. It is NEVER appropriate to hit someone!
NOW - having said that - I do feel that hitting is ok if it is in self defense - as in someone is attacking you and you are in physical danger. Not as in someone doesn''t like what you said to them and they took a swing at you - you should be the bigger person and walk away. I think those who hit do so because they become frustrated and don''t have the vocabulary to put their anger into words instead.

Re: Is hitting someone ever ok?
The only time I hit someone, was in 9th grade. Some girl was giving my sister hell that year, she was a senior. She took my sister and slammed her head into a brick wall, well I was So I beat the CRAP out of her. She was so embarrased that a freshman beat her up.
Now, I would never condone it, unless Im defending myself, but I would do it all over again for my sister
