Is it OK not to have an engagment party.

Is it OK not to have an engagment party.

I recently graduated from medical school and had a HUGE graduation party (totally sweet 16 style)...and then got engaged the month after the party (2010 has been a great year). My fiance and I don't wanna throw ANOTHER big party like that cause we feel really bad making people give us gifts again (we live together so the money i got from graduation pretty much went to house bills). Is it ok to not have another party? My parents were thinking to just have the immediate family and bridal party go out to dinner....no DJ, No favors...nothing like my graduation party. Any other ideas for super low key parties?

I think a dinner with the immediate family and bridal party sounds great.

That sounds good to me. Going out to dinner with your closest friends and family sound life a great way to celebrate. I'm graduating in May and am not having a party because its only fours months before my wedding.

I like your mom's idea about immediate family going to dinner ...

We had a low key party - just family and friends for a luncheon.. no dj.. no crazy anything.. just the people closest to us in one room to celebrate.

Personally, I think its fine to not have a party.. or to do something small... It doesn't have to be a 'mini wedding'... Do what is comfortable to you!

Thanks everyone! My fiance was very big on not having a big party....and although i love parties, i agree with him that we just threw one. I'm probably gonna just have the immediate family and very very few friends go to a resturant for either a lunch or dinner. I dunno if anyone here is familiar with City Island in the Bronx, but thats probably where we would do it. I'm thinking about DIY invites and small centerpieces. Any idea? Also, we got engaged in June...wedding is FAR FAR away (Oct 2013), because my schedule is insane.....when should we do the engagment party?

I have had alot going on with alot of parties as well. So we are having an 'e-party' if you want to call it that. It is just our immediate family and close friends (we are calling it more of a meet and greet) and doing it in a hotel (brunch buffet style). No real favors, no DJ, simple centerpieces, etc.

I totally think you can do it. You need to celebrate these good events in your life! Plus, if you are nervous about people spending money on you maybe say 'no gifts.'

hope this helps.

i think the smaller party is a great idea. not everyone has an eparty. i didn't, and that doesn't make it any less official

If you aren't planning on getting married for a while, you could always wait a year to have an engagement party. I had mine just 2 months after our engagement, but my cousin got engaged and had a 3 year engagement so she didn't have her e-party until 1.5 years after her engagement. HTH!

We didn't have a big engagement party either .. we got engaged last year a week before 4th of July so we just invited close family/friends to a BBQ and combined both events in one.

we ended up not having an engagement party at all. having a small dinner would be a nice alternative.

Ididn't have an engagement party. My parents were totally against it. I wanted one but my mother told me absolutely not. My mom is old fashion so she thinks by having an engagement party you are asknig too much of your guests by having them give a gift for the engagement, then the shower and then the wedding. So its perfectly fine not to have one

Congrats on Med School thats awesome!

I think its totally fine not to have a big engagement party. If you just want a nice dinner do it.

My engagement party is just a 'luau' backyard bbq. We just wanted to celebrate and have fun with our families.

Congrats..it is perfectly fine not to have an engagment party.

FH & I have been together for 7+ years (at engagment) had everything and did not want to have a party. Most of our friends have never had an engagement party so we did not either

this is what we did. ordered some heroes, got some beer and wine, and just hung out. no DJ, no favors, no mini wedding. I thought it was perfect!

Congrats on med school! What are u doing for residency? What specialty and where? :)

I think a back yard bbq while the weather is nice is a good idea. U could even go into september. Or since u have so much time, do a smaller more intimate thing in the winter, maybe after the holidays. A family/bp meet and greet?
