Is the marriage licensed 'used' in the religious ceremony? Or is it two separate things?

Is the marriage licensed 'used' in the religious ceremony? Or is it two separate things?
Hi- Hope this isn't a dumb question
We thought the marriage license was sort of independent of the church, and so for various reasons, we were thinking of not doing the license til Jan 2007. (roughly two months after the wedding).
but the church booklet says to bring your license to the church rehearsal and give it to the deacon.
what do they do with it?
can anyone please clue in this clueless bride?
pretty please!

The license is what you need to get signed by your priest/clergy person to give to the governement. This says that they married you. They don't do anything with it during the ceremony, but they have to sign it afterwards to say that you are married.

You need to bring it to the rehersal because it gets signed by the priest, and the 2 witnesses. Then the church sends it out to the state, about 3 weeks later you get your offical marriage licience which you can use to change your name.

The priest/officant as well as the witnesses will have to sign the mariage licence.
Depending on the church/place, it can be done at the rehearsal or during/after the ceremony.
