ok, so i have seen a few brides on here put their wedding dress for sale, and also i have seen brides on ebay selling their gown 'worn once' This said i am not very sentimental, i hate collecting things and I know wedding gowns can be so expensive and im not sure if i would want to sell it, i know i definately dont want to have it preserved in a box that i can take out. I know if i have kids that styles change and they arent going to want to wear it. So my idea was to get a dress that was a mermaid, or trumpet style where the poof is on the bottom part, i have a whole bunch of dresses in my album of the styles im in love with. So after i wear my dress once, i was thinking of going to the tailor and getting it cut at the knee for a cocktail dress. NOW is this a totally wacked out idea?? I obviously would not be able to wear it to a wedding, but im sure there will be other events i could wear it to. It may even give me motivation to keep my shape after possibly?
I would love to know if anyone thinks this is crazy??

I think its a fine idea. Maybe you can even get it dyed to a different color so you CAN wear it to a wedding.

I know someone who did this. The altered and dyed it. Why not, it will cost as much to preserve it and you will never wear it again

I think it would be a fine idea, but don't get a certain style of dress just because you MIGHT be able to wear it again.

I think that's a great idea! I'm thinking of doing that with my dress. The woman at the shop actually suggested that when I bought it! And if you're looking to wear your dress again, it's much more likely you'll have somewhere to wear a white cocktail dress to than a white gown.

I think that's a great idea!!! Renée Zellweger did it to the dress she got for her wedding to Kenny Chesney. She took and cut off the bottom and died it black and wore it to an awards show. She was quoted saying how much she loved the dress and it was a shame to never wear it again

Not crazy at all, but if you decided that you really wanted a poofy gown, then you could always rent your wedding dress. That is cheaper, and then you just give it back.

wow, im so happy with all the positive responses i am getting, its making me feel so much better, I definately love the mermaid shape and trumpet shape dresses, i definately want to show off my figure at my wedding, i love how those style dresses show off a womans curves. I love the ideas of dying it a different color, that is such a great idea, Maybe i can wear it somewhere in its original color then dye it another color...wear it again...all the dresses i seem to like are expensive so i could get all these uses out of it wich i think is sooooo great!!! my friend was telling me i could use the extra fabric to make a bag or clutch too. I actually have a white cocktail dress, i wore to a christening, i love the dress so much, its actually made of cotton sateen. Its not very formal here is a picture of that dress, the lengh is just what i have in mind of doing for the wedding dress

i agree with lauren. it is a good idea, but if you find a dress you love, don't rule it out b/c you may not wear it again. 90% of wedding dress are never worn again, mine included, and i'm fine with that. i never set out to get a dress that i'd wear again.

Its a great idea!!! You wear it once and lucky for you you can get it altered to wear it again.
To cut costs I am looking into consignment shops for my wedding dress. My friend works at a consignment shop in a very upper class area and tells me most bridal stores after the season is over they doante the dresses (some never worn or some just were never purchased, or even samples) and you can purchase them for under $100. I am going to take a look there first before going to a regular shop to purchase a new one. I know its 'thrifty' and some may look down at it but seriously you wear it once and no one really cares about your dress unless its something truly horrible that everyone mocks you for wearing it. I never wear white so it wouldn't work out for me to alter it anyway.
BEST IDEA EVER!!!

a friend of mine, was just telling me about those consignment shops, she has a ton of nice clothes and she lost alot of weight and plans on going there to sell all her stuff....that is a great idea, i mean its worn once, you could sell it on ebay and get some money back, but then you wouldnt ever get to touch it again lol. i love all the positive feedback this is getting, im starting to not feel like a nutjob. lol

i think it's totally crazy! I plan on turning my gown into a quilt or something for show that we can have out for years! My friend plans on turning hers into a christening outfit for when she has children.

Not crazy at all-who says you can only wear your wedding dress once.
