In my opinion It depends on who it is. If it is coworkers, casual friends or neighbors then I do not think it is rude, but if it is close friends or family members then I think you might be playing with fire because they will probably know that they are last minute invites and feel insulted.

I think its fine to invite coworkers or something this way, but don't hide it. I'd be very upfront.
i totally agree. I had my parents invite a few of their friends 'last minute' but they totally understood why they weren't originally invited, and were happy to come. as long as you are honest about it, it can work. You also have to consider how sensitive the people are and how close you are with them, because it can be very offensive to some people.

If you do that, you need to make sure you don't include the card that says 'RSVP by this date' so thta people don't realize the situation. Including the RSVP date would be rude, not doing that isn't. How would they ever know?

Re: Is this rude?
I would send them and make up new RSVP cards with a different date. I don't think you could send them out with a date that has passed on it. Buy plain cards and print new ones and send them out.

I think if you let them know that you had to worry about family first and then friends or coworkers they will understand and be happy that you thought of them. If you say they were on your invite list but Iyou have a large family so you had to wait and see if there would be room to invite non family members due to the budget it would be OK.

Re: Is this rude?
I did this a few weeks before the wedding. I actually emailed 3 people who I am friendly, not close friends with, and told them the real deal -- we were trying to keep the numbers small and couldn't invite everyone we would have liked to. Now with the date approaching, we realize we have more space, and would like to invite them, and hope they aren't offended by the short notice. I also asked for their address so I can send them a proper invitation. All 3 wrote back how honored the were that I thought of them at all, and 2 of the 3 came. I ended up being 2 below my minimum, which was fine -- we paid full price for 2 of our vendors.

Re: Is this rude?
I would go with paying full price for kids or vendors...but I did go to an awesome wedding a few years ago where I assume the couple was under the minimum because the waiters came around with extras. They must have cooked the last '10' dinners the couple had to pay for sliced them up thin and everyone got to taste the 3 dishes they didn't order. It was awesome. I oredered chicken, but got to taste steak. It was pretty cool better than just paying for 10 dinners you don't eat. Plus I still tell people about it to this day. It made a great impression on the guests everyone thought it was so classy, it wasn't until I was planning a wedding that I realized they must have been under their minimum.

it depends who.... you could invite coworkers for example and say that you really wanted to invite them but were limited in space so you had to wait to hear from family before you could invite them, but that you really hope they could be there etc
its all about how you do it
i agree

I actually think it's a bit rude. Going to a wedding is a big expense...and I wouldnt want to go and spend all the money for someone who didnt include me until they needed to fill spots. I totally understand the situation you are in...but i think you should just pay for the empty seats and hope the RH will throw something else in for free! : )
ITA...Unless its someone that completely understands and doesn't mind.
I was invited last minute to a coworkers e-party, but I normally work that day and we only really became better friends shortly before. I was touched she invited me and went and never felt like I was on a B-list.

Re: Is this rude?
I am having the same problem right now. We invited 271 people with a minimum of 200...no problem, right?
Right now we are at 180 and are still waiting on replies....the date was supposed to be the 15th, so people are slacking.....anyway, we have gotten a lot of regrets and I am not sure if we are going to reach our minimum, but we will be very close.
I was told to invite people but I feel strange doing it so close to the wedding.....I had friends from college that I wanted to invite but didn't because we already had so many people (family alone).
I feel rude doing it, so I might just suck it up and pay for the 3 empty seats, should we have them

Re: Is this rude?
Like they all say it depends on how you do it. If people know the rsvp date passed then they get invited they know its to make a min. Do it they way the other brides said to that seems safe.

No, I don't think it is rude. Maybe print up your own RSVP card and slip it into the invite and just give them a short response time.
