which one is better? lowest crime rates? better school district? I know central Islip is a bit shady, but I know nothing of the other towns.

Re: Islip, West Islip, East Islip
My DH graduated from Islip, which he loved (a while ago--'95--he did say it has changed a bit since he graduated). My BIL went to West Islip, which I've also heard is good. East Islip also very, very good. So long as you avoid CI, you can't go wrong...

I grew up in East Islip and it is a good, safe area. In addition, the school district is good and they just invested $ in building a new school. I have heard good things about West Islip and Islip as well. Good luck in your search.

I used to live in W. Islip and it's supposed to have one of the best school districts. I live in Islip now and actually prefer it to W. I. I like the 'small town' feel to it.

Re: Islip, West Islip, East Islip
I bought my house in West Islip about seven years ago, and I've been very happy here. Although I don't have kids (yet ) my understanding is the school district is very good. Anything and everything you want is close by, and it's closer to Nassau and the city than Islip and East Islip. It's also right next to Babylon village, which I love to walk around, and Babylon also has a main line LIRR with an express train. My neighbors are great too.
I believe East Islip and Islip also have good school districts and are nice, safe places to live. I don't think you'd go wrong with any of them.

Both areas are really great.... I've spent a lot of time in East Islip and depending on where you look, you can find great houses in all 3 towns.

Really? I had heard good things about all 3... I know Central is not good at all, but I heard Islip, East, and West are good. I didn't grow up here so it's all hearsay for me.

There really aren't any bad parts of East Islip....especially south of sunrise.... In East Islip you have Great River, The Moorings,Deer Run, Quale Run, Country Village, Persey Williams..These are all exclusive developments...I know alot of people trying to buy a house in East Islip..and alot of teachers trying to get a job in the East Islip school district...West Islip also.... East Islip is not a huge town,,but I love it...

I agree. I personally did not go to Islip schools, but I have plenty of friends that I commute with who's children do go and they are VERY happy with their education. I wanted to buy a house in Islip, but we just bought one in East Islip. When I came to the US I lived in West Islip, moved to Islip and will now be moving to East Islip.

I have read the same.
I know south of Montauk is 'most desireable' - are there any pockets of undesireable areas in West Islip, Islip or East Islip?
Is Islip Terrace not as nice as it used to be?

I don't think the Islip Terrace residential area is as nice as East Islip, but it is East Islip schools. It gets closer to the not-so-nice CI section. Great River is beautiful--I got married in Great River on the water. North Great River is not so nice, and I think CI schools.
