Re: Jetta owners??

FH has a 2001 Jetta and it has been nothing but a major headache. For the past year it has gone into the shop at least once every other month with major problems- and once it is there it takes them several days to get the work done. He kept bringing in it (maybe 10 times?) before the warranty was up explaining to them what was wrong...but they could never find anything wrong (it wasn't one dealership either, he took it to 3 dealerships). He took it in for an oil change 5 miles over the warranty and immediately they found a million things that needed to be fixed. Ironic that they make double for their per hour fees when they charge the customer directly instead of getting paid through the warranty? I don't think so. As soon as we can get rid of this POS we will, and will never buy another VW again.

I have a 2000 VW Bug and despite the problems I love it. usually the Jetta and Bug have ahd the same problems and recalls.

In five years I had

A child restraint recall - They did somehting witht eh child seat restraint. I don't even think it was required, just recommened, It wasn't a safety issue, but ease of use, I think

Check Engine light on a lot

The window recall

I replaced the battery last year, but my mechanic said 4 years of use is fairly normal

I replaced I think rear brake pads, again normal according my mechanic.

As far as the recalls go, I bring my car in for dealer recommended service, 20K miles, 40K miles, so I just had thing done all at once. now I'm going to ake an appointment for an oil change and a tire rotation and have them also check out if I did the window recall, and also one of the lights on my dashboard is out (but the air conditioner controls), but I'm sure they'll fix it under the extended warranty I've had. I have exactly zero problems with them fixing things and I'm overall really happy with the car and I would not hesitate to buy another VW. Love the car, it's fun to drive, it makes me happy, and trust me EVERY car has quirky things that go wrong with it. On my mom's car, it happenned to be that the steering column caught fire...so I'm thankful that it was just the windows sticking, and my check engine light being sensitive.

You know the Recommended services are a scam right? The Dealers service department charges you $300 plus to do their recommended services when most of the time you dont even need to get them done.

You should make sure you change your oil every 3000 miles
Drain your antifreeze every other year and have new coolant put in
Rotate your tires every 10000 miles
Change your air filter every 10000 to 15000 miles
Your tune up doesnt need to be done for 100k miles I believe on that car...I may be wrong...Not sure
Get your brakes checked when they feel low and have them changed when they are.
If you can avoid bringing the car to VW for service, you will save a ton of money. There are plenty of good repair shops on Long Island that I would trust before bringing my car back to VW.

Read your warranty before you do any of the above. Usually (w/ VW) if you replace any of the parts (breaks, air filter (this happened to us), etc.) with Non-VW parts, they will void your warranty.

I have an 05 Jetta- happy with it. Between myself and my family, we have had many VW's over the years. Despite the few problems I've had in the past and hear from others, I still love the VW.
yeah, that whole service recommendation is a rip off. glad I have someone that's mechanically inclined

Thats not true. The only time they will void your warranty is if you replace OEM parts with After market high performance parts...Like Changing the Air Filter and putting a performance Air filter on where you remove the factory Air Filter system....Or if you change the exhaust Manifold for a Performace header, and also if you put a performance exhaust on a car or lower it...Then you are at risk for having your warranty voided. Those are the only times a dealer will void it.

If you have your oil changed, or your brakes donw or your anti freeze flushed at a different service center, the deal er will not void your warranty.

Wrong. We changed the air filter and it voided the warranty (not the entire air filter system). I also know 2 people who changed their brakes, and their warranties were voided as well. Read your warranties carefully.

How on earth did that void your warranty? I dont get that...Unless you put something in your engine that didnt belong there, and was causing the car to have a problem there is no way the dealer could void your warranty.

I buy a car from a dealer and I never bring it back to the dealer for service....I have had 2 new cars, and I souped up both of them....I have never had a problem with the dealer telling me I voided my warranty.

I worked for VW for 2 years and Ihave seen many souped up jettas, Gti's and Beetles and none of them had their warranties voided.

Oh and they cannot void your warranty for having your brakes changed...as Long as you are putting Brake Pads on that are like OEM....If they are performance brakes then they can but otherwise, no.

I would look into it if I was you

Not worth looking into...as I said before the car is over 50k miles, so the warranty would be done now anyway...and it's a big pile of cr*p, so we're getting rid of it after we move into our house.

REALLY?? You mean the yearly maintenance things (like every 20k miles or so) are not necessary?

I noticed that with my 2001 Jetta, after I brought it in for my 1 yr was when I started having all my 'problems'. With this one (the 2003), I haven't done those and I'm up to 20k miles and NO problems thus far (besides the center console clip again).

Yup. You wouldnt believe the amount of money dealerships make on their services that customers think are neccessary. Just keep changing the oil, and doing all the maintenance yourself....You will be fine.

I have a 2000 Jetta. My center console clip broke, also, in the first few months of buying the car, my brakes have worn down quicky, the thing that 'catches' the trunk broke, my check engine light is 'stuck' on, and my window thingie has broken TWICE, even after they supposedly replaced it with the one that wasnt supposed to break. Even though I have had my share of problems, I still love the car, lol, I must be crazy.

My trunk thingie went also on my 2001!

AND I just got a recall thing in the mail today for my 2003 saying that there is a defect in some of the heated seats where it can malfunction and get really hot in one spot and damage things near it. They are fixing it for free of course but here we go again!

I got that mailing the other day...my heated seat is doing that...a couple of times I found myslef jumping out of seat from this instant burning... I LOVE my heated seats in the winter...but this is ridiculous...it was always in the same spot that I kept feeling it...I would have to turn the seats off...otherwise I couldn't drive...

ETA...My first car was a 1989 Jetta...I LOVED it...no problems whats so ever...at that time Jettas were not that popular so they were making them alot better. Now they are a'me to' car...you know 'I have a Jetta...me too'...they are everywhere...

Re: Jetta owners??

I have a 2003 Jetta & so far (knock wood) no trouble w/ the heated seats (we love them). The Jetta has been great so far, no problems at all & it drives really nice & we love the dash & its comfortable for a small car. The only semi-problem is the trunk is a bit stiff to open, but FH WD-40'd it and its working much better.

I'd definitely recommend a Jetta.

I had a 2000 VW Beetle and i had so many problems with it. Teh main problem would be taht it would stall when i would be making a turn or slowing down, I brought that car in over six times in a year and a half and they couldn't fix it. So i wenthrough the BBB and had them give me ALL my money back through the lemon law.
I have no idea about jettas but the service at the VW dealers S***S. They are the rudest people and would make me think that i was crazy beasuse they couldn't find anything wrong with my car.
