Jewish Brides...

Original post by Soon2BeMrsS

That are having the 7 Blessing Ceremony...

How are you incorporating this? We were thing of having the BP read them & FH's Aunt & Uncle who we're close with...

I'm not sure how this has been done, I've never seen it. I'm Catholic, but I will be converting, FH is Jewish, but he has a small family & the one wedding (for his family) that we've been too was non-religous ceremony...

TIA

Don't worry about the hora (chair dance) people will rush in and pick you up. You don't have to plan this at all. :) Most of my guests were not Jewish and we still had a great time.

Just make sure your DJ/band knows you want to do this and for how long (we did a 10 min hora thought some people do 30 min.).

The only one I'm aware of is Havah Nagila, which really doesn't require any 'learning,' you just kind of skip around in a circle and then get thrown up into the air on a chair.

Umm, important point. The dance is called the Horah, Havah Nagilah is a song to which one can dance the Horah. The Horah can be danced to pretty much any fast klezmer song. But you're right, it doesn't require any kind of learning, unless you want to do the steps. But most people don't learn the steps and run around in a circle. Besides, I'm assuming your dress will be long enough that no one will even know if you're doing the steps.

Ditto. My FH's non-Jewish family had me show them the Hora at their Christmas party. Everyone caught on in about two seconds. As long as you're holding hands and going in the same direction as everyone else you can't be wrong! Don't worry about it, it's just a few minutes of chaotic fun.

Yep that's us -- in our totally non-Jewish Hora with the 10 people under the chairs and only 1 was Jewish. It is my favorite picture from the wedding day.

I think 30 mins. is pretty hard core. I think 10 to 15 is more sensible.

I think my DJ said most people do between 4 and 10 minutes. I think 7 is a good length without being too short.

The hora is basically a circle dance wher eyou grape vine your feet back and forth. Just keep going the same direction as everyone else, and once or twice reverse the direction along with everyone else.

As for the chair, they usually have you sit on it and give your DH a cloth napkin which you are supposed to grab while you are on the chair in the air. Generally a few of the men will lift you and your DH.

As for any other dances, are you or your DH the last of your parents children to get married? If so, then there is the mazinkah. That is a dance arround your parents when they marry off the last of their children.

Re: Jewish Brides...

We had a rabbi and a cantor who both had great voices. i wanted to take advantage of that, so that cantor did the 7 blessings. it was much smoother than calling on people to do it. we honored people in other ways (having them sign the ketubah, blessing over the bread at reception, etc.)
