Jewish brides - We found our ketubah!

Original post by Goldi1021

FH and I went into Zion Lion today in New Hyde Park just for fun and we ended up finding a ketubah. I am excited. It is making things more real for us.

A Ketubah is a ceremonial Jewish marriage certificate. It is NOT a license. It is a marriage contract that binds a man and woman in accordance to the laws of Moses and Israel.

A Jewish couple STILL has to get a civil license as administered by the state in which they marry.

Thank You, I was wondering myself And they are ALL beautiful

I copied this from a website but it gives more information than I already provided.

'A ketubah is a marriage contract that explains the basic material, conjugal and moral responsbilities of the husband to his wife. It is signed by the groom, as well as two witnesses, and given to the bride during the wedding ceremony.

The purpose of the ketubah is to protect the woman's rights during the marriage and in case she is divorced or widowed. Historically, the ketubah marked a great leap forward in the thinking about the rights of women.

The ketubah used today was written by Simeon ben Shetach in 80 B.C.E. and is in Aramaic, the language used by Jews during that period. At the wedding, under the chuppah, parts of the ketubah are paraphrased and read out loud.

It is forbidden for Jewish couples to live together without a ketubah. If the ketubah is lost, a new one must be written.

It has become traditional, since at least the fourteenth century, to decorate the ketubah as artwork and hang it in the home as a keepsake.'

Thanks! I am really surprised that Ed wasn't as nit-picky as I thought he would be. He usually analyzes and makes everything a project. I just asked him to agree on something that he could see himself looking at forever. I tend to like modern, he likes traditional. I felt this particular ketubah to be a happy medium.

So besides Zion Lion, what other places have them?

I would try any Judaica shop in the 5 Towns, namely on Central Avenue in Cedarhurst. I would also look in Gift World on Main Street In Kew Garden Hills.

Cedarhurst! How could I ever forget about there.

You can't! but I'll be honest with you. Zion Lion had more modern, less traditional and more colorful choices. You can choose the text the way you want it but still I liked their selection better.

I was in Cedarhurst today with my sister. Half the florists we are looking for are there. I always feel like I am a stranger in a strange land!

Yeah I'm really into the idea of color. I don't care if it clashes with my future bedroom.

You could always stick it in a hallway or a dining room in the future. It is nice to look a a ketubah when and if you have family dinners - even (gasp) Shabbos dinners! I am such a silly hebrew.
