Firstly, I think she would like to die now.. its a terrible way to...exist.

BUT, we as Americans so proud in our civil rights and human rights can not possible handle the idea of starving a human being. In ANY condition!

Being a brain dead, brain damaged doesnt matter. WE CAN NOT HANDLE THAT! (in general).

I have to admit, we all sit here at our computers and post our opinions, but we aren't THERE, we aren't her family or her husband. We can't imagine the nightmare of knowing whether she can feel it or not, we are committing her to a slow death. Starvation. I can't imagine what any of them (the family, the judge, the doctors!!) are feeling. We won't allow Dr. Kavorikan type solutions so instead we are left with starvation.

It's tough.

But allowing a loved one to just vegitate..... I couldnt do that either.

but she most likely will not feel it...

'Most likely'...Do you know that for a fact? I just find the whole situation sooo sad. I don't think I could remove the feeding tube!!!

I agree with you, I just hope they drug her up really good and keep her drugged. No pain, just peaceful sleep until the end.

drug her up? with what?
a sleeping pill?

WHO CARES?
I don't what it was that kept my uncle in no pain but they did it.

My uncle and my grandfather chose to die in 2003

My uncle chose to die because he didn't like constantly visiting a doctor. So he told them he was going to stop taking the drugs and just die. His choice. He lasted 3 weeks then died. They kept him 'comfortable'. He died the weekend of Father's Day.

My Grandfather (after losing his first wife, second wife, mother and oldest son) wanted to die. So he stopped dialysis. Just told them no more. They kept him comfy as he died. Took less than 3 days.

They can do it.... Is it a waste of drugs or effort? WHO KNOWS? who cares!??!? Just for the sake of peace of mind, if she were my sister or relative I'd ask she be drugged.

But I'd let her go.

Personally I think its for selfish reasons to keep her alive. All the doctors seem to agree that there is no reason to believe her condition will improve. Especially considering in the last 15 years it has gotten worse! And they are saying that out of the 6+ hours of video tape, the media is showing us the 30 second clip of her smile from like 5-10 years ago.
Yes she probably knows her family is there. My mom knew we were there and even snickered here and there at the sound of our voices when she was within hours of dying. But its not about quantity. Why would you want to watch her sit in a bed unable to live in anyway for, what another 15, 20+ years. She has no life, she is nothing more than existing at this point. All because her family just isnt ready to give up hope. They arent ready to say goodbye. They believe she is still with them. This should not in any way be about them, it should be about her. And it seems to me that very few people have been thinking about her.
I have also hear that she is in no pain, and most likely wont feel any because of the damage to her brain, her pain sensors dont work properly.
Also about the pain issue, I know my mom died of cancer, she was in a TON of pain, she died on a Thursday, up until Wednesday she was on liquid morphine every 2 hours + other pain meds. Thursday, it seemed her body began to shut down and she wasnt feeling the pain. Before if she was at 2 hours 5 minutes past her last dose of meds, she would be moaning and groaning but not that last day. I think your body knows and does what it has to, in order for it to be a peaceful ending.

I just think it all goes back to the statement of when is enough, enough? SHould they keep her alive forever? Or are they keeping her alive for their own selfish reasons in which they can not deal with the death of their daughter??? There are too many factors that play in this case. If i was in this situation i would want to be unplugged i think all of us would just want to die at this point.

According to a report I heard in the news this morning, although it is true, there is no way to know if she will feel pain, most doctors agree that in cases where a feeding tude is pulled (and it apparently happens a lot more often then you would believe based upon how huge this one case has gotten) the patient does not seem to be in pain or suffer. The Dr. they were talking to said that it generally appears to be a peaceful death.

I haven't given my opinion on this topic because this is a very touchy subject for me....

BUT after reading all the posts on this thread and the 'Terry... Tube or No Tube?' thread....I agree with Redhead 150%..She knows what she is talking about!!!!! Unless you are around it everyday or have gone through it with a loved one,,you have no clue.

It's easier to say that they should keep the feeding tube in....I GUARANTEE that if you were around a loved one who was in Terry's condition,,or if you worked with patients who suffer from TBI, you would think differently!

due to my religious beliefs, for me it's a real tough call

I agree with you Don. Usually I am all for preserving life, but in this case I decided that the doctors know best. I think removing the tube is the best thing to do. I also think that legally it is up to her husband, and I can't believe that the parents have been able to prevent the removal of the feeding tube for so long.

Thank you! As a nurse and someone who has worked with TBI (traumatic brain injury) patients, I can tell you that this woman has suffered more in the past 15 years than starving her to death 10x over will do. I've seen families battle over loved ones in this situation and honestly all they are battling over is a body. That person they once loved is gone and it is extremely difficult to accept.
The fact that they kept her alive for the past 15 years bothers me more than her feeding tube being pulled.
P.S. I have on rare occasions cared for patients who were breathing on their own and who's families removed all care including hydration and food and with the families support we do keep them well medicated and comfortable.
