Is anyone here planning to move off of Long Island after their wedding? If so, where and why did you pick that location?
We're thinking of North Carolina... as much as I love Long Island, it's gotten so expensive. Seems like it will take forever to buy a house! North Carolina is really starting to boom! A few of my friends were thinking about it too... I'd love to hear if anyone else is taking off too!

Re: Leaving Long Island
We were going to move to Bradenton, Florida after the wedding but my fiancee couldn't find the right job and I have a good one so it looks like we'll be living on Long Island for a while longer. I just don't know when we'll be able to afford a house on Long Island. They're so darn expensive here.

Re: Leaving Long Island
FH and I have already discussed it and while it will not be RIGHT after the wedding...more like 2-3 years, we're going down to Virigina. We decided that we dont want to raise kids in an apartment and at this rate we wouldn't be able to have kids for like 20 years! lol

We moved to Chicago right after our wedding. We came b/c DH is in school for is MBA and they have the top two ranked schools out here. We planned to move back to the NY area but now love it and DH will graduate in June and we're hoping to stay! Its a little less expensive than NY, but not much.
Me too. I moved to Chicago for grad school and then never came back. It's a nice city, a lot of stuff to offer like NY but on a smaller scale. It is a little cheaper but not my much like you said. We think about moving to NY , especially since my family keeps mentioning it and we miss everyone but I just don't think we want to live in my parent's basement for the next 10 years til we can afford the 600k 'handy man's special.'

Hello my fellow Chi-town people. I moved to Chicago 5 1/2 yrs ago after undergrad for a job. I met DH 3 months after I moved here. Although I like it here, I still miss the east coast. DH wants to stay in the city, but real estate is ridiculous within city limits. I would love to move to the suburbs, but DH being born and raised in the city hates suburban life. He always complains about LI when he comes home with me.

So nice to see that this got bumped! I think the key to moving, is finding the right place!!! Some people have bad experiences, but if you are coming from Long Island, you need to go to a place that's not completely dead! Too much of a culture shock! Eventhough we're thinking of NC, we'll go towards Charlotte or some major city...

We are going to be moving to Florida too. FH's entire family just moved down there and my parents are also having a house built in Florida. My sister and her family live there too. Then I can spend every weekend (or other) with my niece and nephew!!! I feel like I havent seen them in ages!

Re: Leaving Long Island
I wanted to move to North Carolina! I did a lot of research and NC is a great place to live! However, my husband (then FH) and our families convince me to stay for the sake of our children (which we don't have yet) so they can be around family growing up.

Re: Leaving Long Island
I am!!!
Not as far as everyone else. Unfortunately FH is a cop in Jersey so I am stuck moving there.
To make matter worse, he's a volunteer Firefighter and refuses to leave his hometown (2 square miles, 'where everyone knows your name')
Everyone knows who I am already and that I got really drunk on our 2nd date at the Firemen's Installation.
But...for the same price of a starter home here (say $300,000ish - I know, that's even cheaper than some starter houses in Nassau), I can get a 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage and a pool in his town...and it's 18 miles from the GW bridge.
So...my morale, is you don't have to move THAT far away to make it. There are some areas around NYC that aren't so bad. South Jersey is great - and you can work in Philly.
Just some options for ya! Me? I'll have to start njbrides.com soon (ooo.....idea!)

Re: Leaving Long Island
I wish I could move to North Carolina!!! My FI is against it at the moment but I'm hoping in the next 5 years I can convince him.
I have an aunt and uncle who moved to Raleigh about 8 years ago from Lyndenhurst, Long Island. Since then 6 of their 7 children have moved out there as well. We went to visit over the summer and I absolutely loved it! It does make you feel like you are being ripped off by living in NY. I know that it is a lot slower but it all depends on why you are moving and what your expectations are. Most of my cousins live in Wake Forest which is developing as well. It's definitely worth taking a trip - and honestly the drive isn't really bad at all. My cousins come up once a month or so. FM me if you have any questions.
Good luck!

Re: Leaving Long Island
I don't think I would be able to move out.. too much of a city girl. I've been all over, Raised in Brooklyn, moved to LI w/ and college, lived in Westchester, and am now in Queens. I guess you can say I have been all over NY, but don't see myself leaving.
We've discussed leaving, because FI may find fellowship - in Gastrointerology - and we may have to move. I really don't want to... but I guess for our future, its worth it. I have mixed feelings on this, on the one had, we will be able to afford for me to go for my MBA full time, on the other, I think I would really miss NY. Even if we leave for fellowship, in 3 years we'll be back, stronger than ever

FH is hoping to move me away too! Cary, nOrth Carolina is his top choice! Cape Coral, FL (right near Ft. Meyers ) is a close second.
my grandpa lives in cape coral! just a short ride from the beautiful beautiful beautiful Sanibel Island... if there's anything left after that last hurricane. the last time I was there, there was so much new construction and the houses looked so beautiful!

We are moving too!!!!it wont be until after the wedding, but FH is going to transfer with his company, initially we were looking at the orlando area, but it looks like its going to be Miami now because of the availability of jobs for him down there. I am so excited to move, I will miss my family terribly, but like someone said, its a 2 hr flight! FH's parents will be retiring in the carolinas in a few years anyway, and I am hoping to get my family down in florida as well!! we are looking to have a house built, 4br, 3bath 3 car garage, pool, etc. for about 275-300k. and there are plenty of cheaper houses then that!! i never thought i would leave long island, but I am just done with it now. its weird. we will be able to have a brand new house, in a great neighborhood, with palm trees and amazing weather all year round!! it doesnt get much better than that!! good luck to all who are moving!

Re: Leaving Long Island
I moved to Florida after not being able to find a teaching job on LI- and it turned out good for me because I met my FH here!!! Also, we are having a house built in a month in a new development- for only 145k. My area (Clermont, FL) is pretty booming- new target, restaurants, etc. There are also a lot of New Yorkers here!
The only thing I do miss is the cold- but we are getting some chilly weather (for us) right now- it is in the 40-50s today! ha. Last winter it did get into the 30's. But, it only stays cold long enough for you to dream of the warmer weather again- and then it gets warm!

Re: Leaving Long Island
I didn't move off the island, but I did move 'Up' the Island. From East Hampton to Bohemia. That was hard enough! My family has never lived anywhere else. After looking at houses though, I tried to talk DH into going to North Carolina before their prices sky rocket. He's from Boston and won't hear of it.

soon2bmrs2004: In this link that you posted the first quote is from an article in LI Bus News by Ken S. and is titled 'Postcards from the Mainland' - my DH and I were featured in that article and they put a picture of us in it!! It was all about young couples that moved off LI!
