Is anyone here planning to move off of Long Island after their wedding? If so, where and why did you pick that location?
We're thinking of North Carolina... as much as I love Long Island, it's gotten so expensive. Seems like it will take forever to buy a house! North Carolina is really starting to boom! A few of my friends were thinking about it too... I'd love to hear if anyone else is taking off too!

Re: Leaving Long Island
after the wedding i a moving to florida (tampa) with my future husband. we are still young and everything is so expensivve. it feels like by the time we save enough money to buy a house here we will be senior citizens ready to relax and retirer. tampa has alot of job opportunities.

Re: Leaving Long Island
DH and I just got married ( 11/5/04) and we are moving January 2nd to Fort Myers, Florida. Long Island is way to expensive for us. We feel that right now we will never be able to afford to buy a house here and if we ever do we will each be working two jobs to pay for it. Dh got a wonderful job opp. in FL making just what he makes here so we had to jump at that. So it's off to FL. we go!

Re: Leaving Long Island
Hey!
I just moved from LI to FL - We're still getting married in New York though, since that's where our family and friends still are . . .
It's been great. FH and I have worked through a lot together - both of us working new jobs, living in a new place, etc. It's so much fun - there are hard times b/c we miss our friends of course, but we visit NY frequently and I'm sure we'll meet more and more new people as we go along down here. Besides, one thing I do NOT miss is the cold, dark, wet, dreary winter. It's like ALWAYS sunny and beautiful here. . . and yes, less expensive. There's no state income tax here, sales tax is lower, car insurance is way way lower, houses are cheaper and you get a lot more from your money.
GOOD LUCK!! It's great not to be afraid of change - that's what life is all about, right?

Re: Leaving Long Island
I already left six years ago to move to LA for the beach and the weather. Now we are thinking of moving again since everything is so expensive here as well. Even worse than LI if you can believe it. A starter house in our neighborhood goes for 650,000 and up!

Re: Leaving Long Island
i'm getting married on LI, but I'm already in Virginia. I'm in a fairly rural area that is starting to grow... you can get a nice, 3 bedroom for like $200k down here...
northern, VA has prices more like LI, but taxes are lower.

FH is hoping to move me away too! Cary, nOrth Carolina is his top choice! Cape Coral, FL (right near Ft. Meyers ) is a close second.

Re: Leaving Long Island
FH and I will be staying here, but one of my close friends (a BM) and her husband are currently having a house built in North Carolina. They both decided, like you, that its just too expensive here and that NC is really starting to develop. They're building in a development with a lot of other young people in similar situations, so they're hoping to make friends there. Good luck to you in whatever you decide!

Re: Leaving Long Island
It's so nice to hear that I'm not the only one. While change is scary, we're kind of excited to start fresh! We can always come back if we'de like and I think it will be good. We were looking at having a house built. It was $163K and it had 5 bedrooms, 3 baths, walk in closets, etc. the list goes on and on.... it's amazing what has happened to Long Island. It's a shame we have to virtually be forced to move away from friends and family, but I went away for college, so you learn to adapt to a new environment and make new friends, etc. I'de love to hear more about where everyone's moving.... keep it coming!

Re: Leaving Long Island
We moved to Chicago right after our wedding. We came b/c DH is in school for is MBA and they have the top two ranked schools out here. We planned to move back to the NY area but now love it and DH will graduate in June and we're hoping to stay! Its a little less expensive than NY, but not much.
If I could have it my way, I would have left a long time ago especially after calculating that I have wasted over $50k in rent already. But FH is a cop so we are stuck here for another 19 years or so.

Re: Leaving Long Island
I'm not from LI, my FH is and we'll be living in Florida after we're married (about an hour north of West Palm Beach). Although I love the seasonal weather of the East coast, the cost of living is so much lower down south and its developing like crazy! I dont know if I'm ready for all the hurricanes tho

Re: Leaving Long Island
I would like to eventually. I am in Grad school until 2007 but after that we might. It is too expensive and in my opinion just not worth it.

Re: Leaving Long Island
Uh... before you get too pumped on NC... let me just tell you that my SIL moved there with her husband on the word of her sister that NC was sooooo great and 'booming' same as you put it. A few years later my ILs moved there too.
Though there is lots of beautiful new construction down there, it is still pretty dead. My MIL took over 8 mos to find a job and even then it was NOTHING like what she wanted or what she should be making $$$ wise.
My SIL wants nothing more than to move back to NY but as we all know, once you leave NY, you can't come back or at least it's very very difficult to.
Anyway, they are in Kernersville. I think if you look toward more urban areas, you'll be fine. There's a friggin farm at the end of their block and most of these developments are so new that there are NO TREES... it's kinda depressing, if you ask me.
Sorry... I don't mean to burst your NC bubble, I just feel really bad for the two couples I know already that have moved there and don't like it and now they are stuck.
