Is anyone here planning to move off of Long Island after their wedding? If so, where and why did you pick that location?
We're thinking of North Carolina... as much as I love Long Island, it's gotten so expensive. Seems like it will take forever to buy a house! North Carolina is really starting to boom! A few of my friends were thinking about it too... I'd love to hear if anyone else is taking off too!

Re: Leaving Long Island
I will be moving to NC after I get married. My fiance is in the military and is stationed there (in Fayetteville, an hour south east of Raleigh). Not my pic in NC to move to but we have no choice unfortunately.
We will be moving back to Washington DC after he completes his time in the army (another 2.5 years) so he can go to law school and we'll be relatively near his family.

Re: Leaving Long Island
Well we've gotten a little further in our home search. We got pre-approved for a mortgage. So we're in the next phase I suppose. We are hopefully going to down to check it all out within the next few weeks. Cary seems to be off our list now. The homes are very expensive. Not as expensive as LI, but much more expensive then other areas of NC. Apex I hear is very nice, but I believe that's getting a bit more expensive too. We're considering possibly starting off in an apartment until we have stable jobs. For those of you that moved there, how hard/easy was it to find a job and where did you end up working? Please let me know!!

Re: Leaving Long Island - UPDATED - see page 4
Hey everyone!!! I wanted to give all of you an update on the home search and North Carolina. FH and I went down to NC about two weeks ago. (Raleigh) Let me tell you, it was ABSOLUTELY gorgeous down there!!! People are nice, weather was great, TONS of food and shopping (more than here!!!) Houses were all new, big and beautiful and most of all, AFFORDABLE!!! We have a buyer's agent now and her and her husband showed us all around Raleigh. Various houses, etc. We found one in particular that we might actually buy!!! It's 3100 sq. ft!!! It will be built!!! HUGE rooms, walk in closets all over, 2 car garage, the list goes on and on... and the cost.... drum roll please!!! $186K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable. When they say the area is really 'up and coming' they aren't lying.... everthing is BRAND NEW!!! Movies, shopping, bars, restaurants all that you could want and it's all near by too!!! Brand new schools, etc. And yes, Cary is WAY too expensive, but Raleigh was great. It's not like you would think... like NYC... that's waht I thought. There is a downtown area with a skyline and all, but we were outside of there. So let met know if anyone else has visted recently and what you thought!

Re: Leaving Long Island
Woohoo!! Congrats!!!
FH and I went in January... he went back with his brother a couple weeks ago. His brother liked the area enough to put his house on the market and plan their move with his wife!
I don't think Cary is expensive - but compared to other areas, I guess it is a bit higher. How big is the property that the house will be built on? How about the Raleigh city taxes?
I can't wait to leave LI - everyday I look forward to it more and more

Re: Leaving Long Island
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to afford any house anywhere on LI. We live in Queens now and we hate it there, taxes are very low, but houses are very high and not woth it one bit. We really do not know what to do. We would like to move to LI, but taxes are ridiculous and houses are expensive too. I, of course, would LOVEEE to move to Orlando, FL. My uncle lives down there and just had his second house built. Its GORGEOUS. And soooooo Friggin cheap!!! I'm trying to convince my FH to move down there, but I duno if he would leave his family.(I think so, but i'm not sure!!) He's afraid he won't find a job in his field-Network Administrator (Computers). My mother doesnt want me to go, she feels the same was Julz33 family does-when we have kids, who are they going to grow up with? I think they should move down there then. This is so hard!! We have to start looking for apartments I guess, bc houses are way too expensive (we don't live together now, but close enough-across the street!!). I really don't know where to live...Any suggestions?? LOL

Re: Leaving Long Island
My sister and her husband just built a 4 bedroom house outside of Charolotte, NC with all new everything for $250k!!!
Eventually, FH and i will probably make the leap and go down there too. We just don't make enough (and probably never will) to live even somewhat comfortably here in LI. It's so sad!!!

Re: Leaving Long Island
For those of you wondering where there is an affordable place on LI. Islandia. We bought a house here almost two years ago. It is a well maintained house, the neighbors are nice and keep to themselves. The house cost about 290,000. The schools here are not great but if you are looking for a starter home and don't have children yet, we figured we'd have about 7 yrs before we had a child in school. It is directly off Exit 58, if you are north of the LIE kids can go to Connetquot schools(I think) If your FH is handy you may be able to get an even better deal and fix up a less expensive house. I would look into it.

Re: Leaving Long Island
funny that so many of you are talking about cary, apex and raleigh-durham. my parents and brother and sil are all thinking of moving down there. my brother owns his own business which requires a huge warehouse and he's getting killed in rent on long island. so they figure they can go down there get nicer houses and put the business wherever. i'm so sad they are thinking of leaving, but now dh and i are talking about possibly moving to flagstaff or prescott, arizona. we'll see. good luck to everyone!

Re: Leaving Long Island
Wow - it seems that everyone's leaving! FH and I plan on moving to Atlanta in September. Right now we live in Brooklyn and HATE it....things are too expensive and crowded. All I want is a backyard that isnt cement!! And being that we're both city cops - we'll never be able to afford anything decent staying here. So we're moving down south where we'll get paid the same and be able to buy something nice to raise our children in! I have heard great things about Atlanta (outside of the city limits) and I've been there and loved it. I'm just counting the days till sept! Good luck to all you guys with your moves! I hear NC is great also - we considered moving there as well.

i'm getting married on LI, but I'm already in Virginia. I'm in a fairly rural area that is starting to grow... you can get a nice, 3 bedroom for like $200k down here...
northern, VA has prices more like LI, but taxes are lower.[/QUOTE)
Yep--glad DH already has a house! I love it down here though

Re: Leaving Long Island
Hey guys!! Sorry it took so long to write back... running a few errands. Anyway, as far as the job market down there, it's very very plentiful. In fact, I did a google search on 'jobs in North Carolina' and came across a Money Magazine article stating that Raleigh, NC was the best place for jobs on the east coast. That's mainly why we went there in particular. No, we don't have jobs yet. THat's really what's so scary. Our plans are to figure out when we would want to move. Then about 2-3 months before start the job search. Basically save up our vacation time to set aside a week or so to interview with companies. Unfortunately, my company doens't have any offices in NC. :( or else I would love to transfer. Pharmaceutical sales and teaching seem to be HUGE down there, and get this- anyone with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited University can teach there. Yes, even me with my Marketing degree.. I can walk in and start teaching while earning my teaching certificate. The salaries are NO WHERE NEAR teaching salaries here, but business jobs seem to be very competive with salaries here.

Re: Leaving Long Island
I'm soo jealous of those of you who are going to NC - I want to go so bad - hopefully in a few years.
I don't know about other fields, but I heard the teaching salaries are not that far off from NYC salaries (with a masters.) I know LI salaries don't compare but if you teach in the DOE you shouldn't take too much of a paycut - but it shouldn't matter too much. Also - if you are NYS licensed - they have reciprocity. You only have to sit for the PRAXIS for certain districts.
