Leaving Long Island

Original post by DayBeforeThanksgiving

Hey girls,

Is anyone here planning to move off of Long Island after their wedding? If so, where and why did you pick that location?

We're thinking of North Carolina... as much as I love Long Island, it's gotten so expensive. Seems like it will take forever to buy a house! North Carolina is really starting to boom! A few of my friends were thinking about it too... I'd love to hear if anyone else is taking off too!

We're not sure where we'll live after the wedding but NY doesn't seem to be it...its too expensive...we're looking at South Jersey, Penn or upstate NY...the only thing is that FH won't leave his job so he'll have to commute...living an hour+ outside of the city is more affordable...any closer and things start getting tight...we don't want to but how are we suppose to start a family living here where prices keep rising and your paycheck stays the same????

We're looking into the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina. I've already researched jobs down there and they are plentiful for my field. As much as I would hate to leave my family, I'm not going to spend 400K on a piece of crap fixer-upper, 10K in taxes, and not be able to stay home for a few years to raise my children.

I moved off of LI almost 2 years ago to Northern VA, my FI moved down about a year ago, he wanted to make sure I liked it here before he left his job. It was the best thing I could have done. Everything is alot more affordable and it that far from NY, so when ever I want to go home I can hop in my car and be home in over 4 hours! We will be getting married on LI this summer

OMG!!! FH and I are doing the same! We went down there 2 weeks ago to look at apartments to live in while we search for the house of our dreams!!! What I was told is that Durham is a high crime area, but Raleigh is much nicer.... but if you live within the Raleigh city limits, you pay city tax.

We're looking into going to Cary or Morrisville - and now FH's brother and wife are coming down after we move there too!!!

Good luck with you move - maybe we can rent a moving van togehter!

Yay! This thread has me so siked!!

We are moving to Wilmington NC six weeks after the wedding.

We don't know anyone and we don't care.

For whoever said it's 'dead' they odviously moved for the wrong reasons! 'Dead' is what I am after - a little quiet and a chance to actually live my life! (not work like a slave to throw money away and sit in traffic.)

We are looking for a better quality of life, and a beautful home for our family. New 3 bedrooms for 120K! I have done alot of research on Wilmington (It's up and coming for movie and TV work and a great place to go back to school) and I can't wait to bust out of this area of the country!

Congrats on everyone who is moving - best of luck!

We didn't find one yet - we are heading down in April to scope out the scene a little better. We get emailed listings every day, so we have a good idea of the market and our budget. Wilmington is awesome - young, historic, beachy, fun, and alot of job opportunities opening up - huge companies are building up down there...it's a cool place. We needed to be near the water, but nowhere too dead, so this is what we found!

Where are you thinking of?

Cary. I'd love to be by the water, but I am terrified of hurricanes and they get alot, that's why we're concentrating more inland. But I don't really go to the beach here on Long Island and I am 5mins. away so I should be okay.

Not too mention, I am very fair skinned... nobody wants to see my white a$$ on the beach anyway! :) Haha

How much does it $uck that young couples can not afford to live on LI??

I wish I can afford a house (I am against renting)

Thats why we are looking to move...I guess it doesn't hurt either that I hate the cold weather. We are considering the Carolinas and Florida.

Uh... before you get too pumped on NC... let me just tell you that my SIL moved there with her husband on the word of her sister that NC was sooooo great and 'booming' same as you put it. A few years later my ILs moved there too.

Though there is lots of beautiful new construction down there, it is still pretty dead. My MIL took over 8 mos to find a job and even then it was NOTHING like what she wanted or what she should be making $$$ wise.

My SIL wants nothing more than to move back to NY but as we all know, once you leave NY, you can't come back or at least it's very very difficult to.

Anyway, they are in Kernersville. I think if you look toward more urban areas, you'll be fine. There's a friggin farm at the end of their block and most of these developments are so new that there are NO TREES... it's kinda depressing, if you ask me.

Sorry... I don't mean to burst your NC bubble, I just feel really bad for the two couples I know already that have moved there and don't like it and now they are stuck.

I personally would consider Tampa, though!

I heard the same thing about NC, everyone jumps to move there and then they are bored and want to come back! Although I guess if you are close to Charlotte, you may find more going on. It depends on what kind of lifestyle you want, we know it's crazy expensive here but we are not willing to go so far from our family and friends. Our first house doesn't have to be our last house, and if you can buy a small co-op or something first, real estate always goes up, it's a start if you really want to stay... Just my 2 cents ...

Re: Leaving Long Island

FH and I already bought a condo in NJ. Unfortunately houses there are also expensive. We are moving there because FH lives there now and has a great job. If he gave that up to move here he just wouldn't get as good of a job as he has now. Economically it makes the most sense. So I will be moving from LI and he gets to move 10 mins away from his parents house.

We've also looked into Nash county -- I believe one county away from Wake (Raleigh). Seems really beautiful -- I'm researching more on it. We'd like to live within driving distance of Raleigh because they have the most jobs there for us.

Sure, we can definitely split the moving van costs!!!

Re: Leaving Long Island

I went to school in NC for a year, and lived in Greenville, not too far from Raliegh. I hear that Durham is a great area as well as Cary. Greenville was fun to live in as a student, but I wouldnt want to live in that town otherwise.

One thing to note about NC though: They have one of the best public university systems in the country, but also one of the worst public school systems.

FI is in the Navy so I'll be moving after the wedding
We're still waiting for his orders, but it will most likely be Virginia beach or San diego. At least we'll be still be on the ocean either way!!

Re: Leaving Long Island

Our offer was just accepted on a house in Norwalk, CT. I work in Stamford but FH wanted to relocate too because LI si too expensive and way too much traffic. When we are old and rich (lol) we will come back and buy a summer home on the East end. But we are very far from that.....

Re: Leaving Long Island

I think we would consider moving to Florida, my sister and husband just bought a gorgous newly built house in the Ft. Meyer's area, a hop away from Sanibel Island (gorgous) and it's a really nice area, lots of construction etc. Just wondering Has anyone heard in Florida if you are a resident there for two years and not a home owner-the state will pay your down payment on a house?? Was this a long time ago or is this not true???
