Let's talk Huntington Station

I know the area a little bit. The part that is north of the train tracks, nearish to where those little new townhomes are, seems pretty ok.

The area south of the train tracks seems unsafe.

Does anyone know the real story re: where is safe?

TIA!

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

I lived in Huntington for a long time. Infact some of my family is still there. I would have to say that it is all taking a turn for the worse. The area by the train station is really bad, however, it is starting to get worse as you cross over jericho (closer to the mall). I used to live right by the walt whitman mall, which used to be great. I moved a year ago, after my car was broken into TWICE in my driveway. The south huntington school district is getting worse too. I just dont like the area anymore, which is a shame because I spent most of my life there!

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

it's sad b/c it is really a family area and people put a lot of money and time into their houses and drive nice cars and yet, it is still turning into a little gang area. i'm hoping that the community gets better b/c it really is a nice area.

It is such a shame! I cant believe how bad it has become. I have such great childhood memories there. I always thought I would stay there!

I totally agree with you! I too have many happy memories. I still love Huntington and have so many friends there, but there is no way I'd buy a house there, unless I could afford to send my future kids to private school. My FSIL bought a huge house in South Hunt. school district and pays $10,000 in taxes for a school district that's not so great. It really is sad that it's become so bad.

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

OMG I had no idea it was that bad.

The commute to the city is soooo desirable too, it's a shame that the town can't do more to crack down on gangs, drugs, whatever is causing the trouble there.

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

My SIL bought a house right near WWM and fixed it up years ago. It was a drug house and she had to totally gut it. She loves where she lives but she is not a very picky person so she would not tell me any negatives about the area itself. The street she lives on seems nice though but I don't know if I'd move there since I have been hearing bad things about the area turning. JMHO

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

I lived in Huntington Village for 3 years and considered buying in South Huntington/Huntington Station. We decided against it because although there are nice areas of S. Huntington, the school discrict is bad and getting even worse. Unfortunately the Village is the only area in Huntington we want to live but of course can't afford it.

Huntington Station is a 'Weed and Seed' area....

Weed and Seed is a federal grant strategy that is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice. In Huntington Station it is implimeted by the police as well as the Boys and Girls Club located just North of the train station on New York Ave.

The strategy is to 'weed' out drug trafficking, violent crimes and related offenses through coordinated law enforcement and community policing; and then 'seed' the designated areas with prevention, intervention and treatment programs designed to meet the communities' needs for educational scholarships, training, mentoring programs and employment opportunities.

I'm glad to hear there is an attempt to make it safer. It is a shame that any neighborhood has to endure high crime.

The Boys and Girls Club is such an awesome organization. My friend used to work at the one in Bellport and the things they do for the kids are really inspiring.

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

I still do love the area. I have to live in Nassau County right now for civil service reasons, but if I could live anywhere on the island one of my top choices would be in the Harborfields school district - it's still the Huntington area, but a good school district. But the houses are expensive there.

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

Anywhere there is low income housing, there is a bad area. Does anyone else notice this?

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

sadly, yes, and i hate to make such a statement, too. while low income housing is necessary, and believe me, my mom and i were eligible when i was little but we lived with family instead, there needs to be more governmental assistance to keep it up to par and not fall to the wayside.

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

I'm really saddened and surprised by this because there are parts of S. Huntington and Melville that are part of SD #13 that are beautiful, with large expensive homes in desirable areas, and it's all still close to the city. What are these people going to do - everyone send their kids to private school? Will people want to buy a $1m home because of the school district?

Where is the low-income housing in Huntington Station? Is it those little townhouses near the station?

I think more affluent towns fight hard against having low-income housing ever enter their area.

The condos across the street from the garage at the train station are middle-income housing. I've heard those are nice. But if you cross 110-New York Ave. there are low income housing units on the right. They are right across from an elementary school (actually I think it's now an 'intermediate' school). I went there for elementary school. It's a nice school, but very bad area. There have been shootings, etc.

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

That's terrible!

This town has so much potential, it's very sad that it has taken such a bad turn. We were considering looking on the side of the middle-income homes, but after reading these posts, I think we'd be taking too much of a risk.

I agree. It's very sad. I have friends who are still planning on buying there. Maybe the school district will turn around again. Also I think the elementary schools are pretty good. So maybe if you bought a 'starter' home and moved by the time the kids go to middle school it would be ok (I guess.) Although I hear starter home become the home people end up in very often.

True. We keep thinking we'll buy a place and sell after 5-7 years, but you never know.

Re: Let's talk Huntington Station

IMO - i would avoid 'the station.' expand your search to include south huntington and the neighborhoods north of the big 'h'. the neighborhoods around the HS are nice as well.

i have had various conversations w/ parents in the district as well as district personnnel. as it is right now, the huntington SD is not desireable. perhaps this will change in upcoming years, but IMO -> it is going to take time and a complete revamp of the current administration to see any significant change.
