We wanted our moms to light them. Our moms are also doing the readings. My mom is walking me down the aisle, so could each mom/reader light the taper after the reading?
Or is there a better time? Or can they just be lit for the start of the ceremony by no one?

Re: lighting the tapers for the unity candle
I would have the mom's light the candles right before the 1st reading.

the unity candle was the very last thing we did. it was after our vows. we lit the tapers from the candles burning at the altar

Re: lighting the tapers for the unity candle
at FSILs wedding they were lit at the start of the ceremony by the Priest...but it was short. I would have the moms light them when its time. Also ask your officiant (etc.) maybe they can offer advice on what/how to do it

not a stupid question...they used the candle on the altar (this was in a church)...they are two candles lit on each side of altar they lit their candle on 'their side'
