NYC salaries are now competitive and we won 55/25 (can retire at age 55 with 25 years experience) but the amount of BS you have to put up with is incredible. I love the kids and the challenges of the job but I hate hate hate teaching in NYC.
u can say that again! i hate it too
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! I'm graduating in december and i'll be certified to teach in NYC around february or march...my mother's been a teacher for 30+ years and she is tired of it, things are getting worse...teachers are being mistreated by everyone (students AND administration)...i'm trying to figure out whether I want to apply for jobs in the city or in long island....
Defintely go for LI..out of college you'll make (in most LI school districts) anywhere from 8-15 thousand more than if you start at certain city schools..amazing, right?
Yeah, I heard about that part! and I want to live in long island anyway, the houses tend to be less expensive there than in the boroughs, so it sounds like a win-win situation to me!

the teachers at my school are good but the kids su ck and basically run the school..bc everything these days is considered corporal punishment so basically the kids can tell u to go f yourself, throw a chair at u, etc... and ull be lucky if they put the kid in the save room (like in school suspension room) for a day.. its nuts

an elementary postition is very hard to get on LI (not sure if you are ele ed or sec ed). Hopefully you will be a lucky one and get a job on LI. Working in NYC hasnt been that bad for me. My school is decent and though there is BS - wait till you work on the island.. there is a whole different kind of BS and on top of thats parents in the better districts are more involved and feel more entitled.
I too want to get a job on LI to be closer to home and make some more money.. but FH works on LI and i see what he goes through and it def helps me feel better about working in NYC
Really? What is it like...i'd really like to know because I have no idea about the school system in LI...I want to be able to make a well-informed decision...i'll be certified to teach ELA grades 7-12..

its not that its bad - but parents are on your @ss in the better districts, esp for spec ed all the parents think their child is entitled to services and when they dont get what they want they bring in lawyers.
someone i know just got a job on LI and was already tenured in NYC,. she has to get observed 6 times a year.
all i am saying is that there are good and bad points to working in the city and on LI.
you may have a hard time getting on job on LI with ELA.. Math and science are easier to get jobs for. But hopefully you will do great and get a job asap!!

Yeah, that's the part that bothers me....kids don't get punished for anything anymore...if they do something wrong, students and administrators always find a way to make it the teachers fault...it's ridiculous...of course the kids are going to run amok if they know they'll get away with it

I know it sounds crazy waht these kids today can get away with, its unreal it really is. It takes a special person to be a teacher, its alot of work with not alot of recognition. and no matter where you are rich area or poor area there negative things u have to deal with
One good thing about the schools getting worse is that its great for my FH, because he is getting tons of contracts to install video surveillance and alarm systems and access control into all the schools. NYS contracts are big bucks!!!

geez 6 times a year?? I thought they were crazy with the obsevations in NYC and they only observe teachers 4 times a year...and that's only new teachers...you're right, both areas have the good and the bad..

I'm applying again this year. I have Elementary Education (N-6) and Reading (K-12) certifications. I'm a trained Reading Recovery teacher, I'm bilingual -- and I couldn't find a job last year.
It is definitely WHO you know!

That's not necessarily true. A girlfriend of mine got a job teaching on Long Island and I got a job teaching in Bayside, Queens. We both teach special education for autistic children. I actually make slightly more than she does as a new teacher. On LI you make more over time and the salaries go up quicker. However, over your first 3-5 years, it all evens out. After you have 2-3 years of experience in the city, it is much easier to get a job on LI. Try looking for a job in Queens. My commute is not bad at all and it is a wealthy area...better than some parts of LI.

I agree it's who you know, I got my job through a family member, and my friend who works out here now got her job through me.. LITERALLY!.... she put all over her resume and coverletter that she knew me, I submitted her resume for her, and when she interviewed i instructed her to drop my name several times.. she admitted the first time she mentioned my name, the interview panel perked up and was like,. oh okay.. up till that point they weren't even interested in the interview..
Try to focus on that reading teacher degree.. elem ed jobs are soo hard to come by, it's almost a waste.. i wish someone had told me that when i went for my masters.. lol. i remember when i first tried to get a job out here, the head of personnel actually told me she has two file cabinets FULL of elem ed resumes.. when an opening comes up, they just grab the first one in each letter of the alphabet and that's who they call in.. they don't look through them cause there are way too many of them to look through.. but with a reading teacher cert and billingual, u should do pretty good..
