Long Island School Districts?

Is there anything that I can find that rates all the school districts on Long Island against each other? I am curious where some may fall. Thanks.

Re: Long Island School Districts?

I wouldn't even look at them if you don't have kids yet, we live in Huntington and figured that the district was great, but time changes everything and in the short 5 years that we have been here, the distrct has become undesirable and we have our daughter in a private school. Things change, schools that are good can turn bad and vice versa. There are not many good districts on LI anymore, the private schools are booming as a result.

Re: Long Island School Districts?

Though you may not have kids, the quality of the school district does matter. The better the district, the higher the property value and the more attractive your house is - should you decide to sell.

While I agree with the first part of your statment completely I COMPLETELY disagree with the second statement. There are still a TON of great districts on Long Island. Most/Many of the districts are still top in the country and the scores continue to constantly approve. Long Island schools for the most part score the higest in the state. Are there more problems in the schools now a days (gangs, violence, drug etc.), possibly but this is a NATIONAL problem!!! Right or wrong it is a national problem.

As for the private schools, I have seen many come back to our district because their education is inferior to what we offer.

i TOTALLY agree. we are looking to purchase a home in huntington w/ full intetnions of moving in 5 years due to the SD.

my advise to is to start researching the districts and then pick a few areas that you would like to live.

Re: Long Island School Districts?

well, regardless, Good luck to everyone, it's atough decision, my husband and I struggled with our decision for many months, but I see alot of kids in my private practice and the kids that are in public schools scared me to death. I think the public school teachers are GREAT, but the sizes of the schools, working parents, conditions of the schools, drugs, violence and now just with the overall anxiety-polluted nation (due to terrorism, health concerns etc) I see the private school kids being much better focused.
We do have some good districts, but they are limited. I get reports from the 5 schools that I work intensely with and some of the reports I read are frightening. I'm the product of public school and I have done quite well for myself, but times change. I know my district is not what it once was. The elementary schools are constantly on 'lock-down' and there are shootings outside the schools, a much different environment than what I grew up in and Huntington is considered a desirable community to live in!

although i agree that huntington SD is not what it once was, i think your elementary schools 'constant lock-down' and 'shooting' comment is not accurate.

i know there have been problems w/ some of the schools (huntington el, finley, and HHS) but to say that it has happened in all the huntington schools is incorrect. flower hill and southdown are 2 very prominent schools in the district and they may have some problems (like many other LI elem schools), but nothing like you are claiming.

Re: Long Island School Districts?

you're right, Flower Hill and Southdown are great schools, but the zoning has changed and the kids would eventually HAVE to pass through those schools which have problems. I love Huntington, the teachers, the community, I am in fact am very good friends with the super of the district, he is great, and was in fact my teacher in Huntington Elem MANY years ago, and I have at least 10 friends who are teachers through out the district, so I know there is quality there, I just think the schools are overall seeing the repercutions of the turmoil our nation is in. Kids are anxious, angry, scared and it comes through in their behavior.

Re: Long Island School Districts?

ok, i am going to probably get flamed for this one, but what the h*e*l*l. IMO -> one of the major reasons why the huntington SD has declined in the past 10 years is due to the increasing # of 'foreigners' that have taken over huntington station. drug trade and gang activity have increased signifcantly in the past 5 or so years.

i do not mean to sound prejudice, but i am very bitter. i grew up in huntington and yes, we had our share of problems, but NOTHING compared to those that the district is facing today.

Re: Long Island School Districts?

yikes! i'm not touching that one!!! Sounds like you are very undecided, but don't let te school districts influence your decision to move to Huntington, this is a GREAT town, I've been here almost my whole life and I will never leave.

Re: Long Island School Districts?

you may not choose to discuss it, but i doubt you can dispute it.

i was born and raised in huntington and my loyalty still remains. my only concern is the district. a lot can change in 5 years, so i am keeping an open mind.

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion and although I value your I also know many kids who come white bread, afluent families who have caused quite a ruckus up at that high school. Let talk, we may know each other!!!
