is anyone else having a hard time with this? Who is keeping their last name, who's using both, and who's changing it and using only your married name?
I think I'm going to use both, but no hyphen I'll just have three names.

Re: Losing your last name
I have been having a very hard time esp since my new last name is nine letters long and ALWAYS mispronounced and mispelled. I use both or one or the other depending on the situation.

Re: Losing your last name
I'm having a VERY hard time with this. I really do not want to change my name when we get married, but it is one of the few things that my FH feels strongly about. I think that I will end up using both as a compromise...

Re: Losing your last name
Im glad I'm not the only one. My FH says he doesn't care, but I know he does. My Future mother in law already passed a comment about how much she hates women that keep their last name after marriage. Makes me want to do it just to piss her off! lol

Re: Losing your last name
I don't have a problem with changing my last name. All through life I was an S and it was always embarrassing in school when teachers would mispronounce and kids would giggle (lol sad but true lol) Now I'm moving on up the alphabet list I'm gonna be a J!!! Yay plus it's easier to pronounce

Re: Losing your last name
I am using both professionally because I will have 2 degrees in my maiden name, so I figure I will hyphen them. Everything else will be married name.

Re: Losing your last name
i always got teased about my last name, b/c it's hard to pronounce. but i have finally come to love my last name, so i've decided to keep it (it's short) and hyphenate with my fh's.

Re: Losing your last name
I'm excited to change my name...in addition to keeping my last initial (F), I'm also gaining an Italian last name! I'm a proud Italian, but my maiden name is very Irish.

i'm ok with losing my name, imo it's a smack in my fh face not to take his name, i do also believe in people keeping their name for the sake of their profession though

Re: Losing your last name
I changed my name. It was very upsetting. After me - that's it. The name is gone. My dad's other brother has a girl who also is married at changed her name. Kinda sad. I couldn't hypenate. It would be too, too long!
ALthough I still answer the phone at work with my maiden name. It's hard - I have been using it for 27 years!! I only lost one letter. I was hoping to lose a few more!

Re: Losing your last name
I've kept my last name. Not just for professional reasons, but also because it's something I feel strongly about. When people (i.e., family) ask me why, I say that my husband can change his name if he would like, but I like mine just fine!
That said, can't tell you how annoying it is when we get mail (again, almost always from family) that refers to us as Mr. & Mrs. Hislastname. I understand when older relatives do it, but when friends our age do it I find it surprising.

Re: Losing your last name
Why do you see it as losing something. I see it as gaining my new family name.

I kept my last name, but have been thinking about changing my first name; 'Wesley' is a bit weak.

Whoa, that's a pretty strong opinion. Can't say I agree or even understand the logic behind it. You're agreeing to commit your lives to each other, that is the underlying and most important decision. The rest is literally semantics.

Re: Losing your last name
It should be an honor to change your last name. I dont understand when women dont want to change their last name. I guess its some type of 'im a strong woman' thing.
