Have you or anyone you know gotten married (secretely or publicly) before the wedding day? Whether for insurance reasons, benefits, finances, etc...
My ex's cousn got married secretly before the date and we all went to jamaica to find out they were renewing their vows. (he needed her insurance b/c he had a kidney transplant). do you have a story like this?

Re: Married before the wedding day...
My cousin!! I didn't find out until someone accidentally let it slip...
FH and I might have to get married before we have the big ceremony because our parents are superstitious and want to find a 'good day' in the Chinese calendar for us to get hitched. So if 3/29 is not a good day in the calendar, we'll have to sign the license and everyone on a different day than when we're having the ceremony etc... which I really don't want to do...
(the reason why we couldn't pick a day right now that's 'good' is because the calendar hasn't come out yet...so we have to wait until later this year to find out!!)

Our friends did that!! They are getting married next weekend, but they 'technically' got married 3 months ago after her FH had a running accident and needed to have ACL surgery. He didn't have insurance so they got married and he was eligible for the surgery 30 days later!!

My cousin did this. Not for any other reason but that she went to go visit her husband in Atlanta where he is going to medical school and convinced him to just elope then and there. She didn't say anything for a while, but they had a ceremony and reception about 3 months later.

Re: Married before the wedding day...
I know at least three or four couples who did this - for various different reasons, like, insurance or immigration problems. I think it's kind of cute to run off and get hitched.
My parents eloped many years ago (not for any of the reasons above, really, just because they were crazy kids). They did not know what to do afterward because my Mom could not stay out all night SO my DAD DROPPED HER OFF AT HER HOUSE and went home. They got married in the church shortly thereafter.
They've been married for almost 40 years and celebrate the day that they eloped and the day of their 'public' wedding too. Can't go wrong with two excuses to celebrate!

Re: Married before the wedding day...
we have been toying with the idea (its a secret, well sarah (my moh) is on this site..lol..) don't tell anyone!
anyway, if he goes into the police academy he wants to get married 'just in case.' he said also since i dont have medical insurance right now and i want to have surgery he wants me to be protected. we'll see what happens! maybe vegas or just the courthouse. gosh, that's a good reason for a trip!

We are doing that, but not for insurance or anything, it's because we want to. When we have our church wedding, it will not a renewal of vows, it'll be like a normal ceremony. Our immediate family, MOH, BM and the pastor will know.

Re: Married before the wedding day...
My best friend did that-her official wedding is this August but she and her 'FH' have been married for almost a year now! No one but her sis, me and a handful of other people know. They did it because they've been together 6 years and knew they were going to have to have a big wedding to please their families. So she wanted to have THIER day that no wedding drama could ruin. She said now if her crazy family ruins the official wedding, she wont even care because sh already had her day.

Re: Married before the wedding day...
We did it. We have been married in June 2yrs. We had enough with DH's parents and how critical they are about us getting married since we already have kids together. So we planned a trip to Vegas. She found out anyway because her and DH's SIL spied on my on here. The only person who was told was my mom because she was watching the kids since DH's parents never want to babysit. Anyhow, most of our families still dont know because I dont want it to take away from our wedding next June.

Re: Married before the wedding day...
We did it! We've actually been married since July 07, 2006. Didn't plan on it at all...here's the story: FH is Austrian but has lived in Germany for awhile... I went to school there and thats where we met... after I graduated Ilived with FH but couldn'T get a job because I didn'T have experience or a work permit. I FINALLY got offered an internship after looking for a year...they really wanted me, buuuut I needed a work permit. So I said to FH (i refer to him like that here cuz its easier) that we NEED to get married because thats the only way I'd get a work permit and a job. And we'd been talking about getting married for aehile so it wasn't totally out of the blue... but within 3 weeks we got married (official proposal was 5 days before we married hehe). In Germany you NEED to have a civil ceremony to be legally married...so we did that..was just the 2 of us because 3 weeks was too short of notice for my family to fly over and if they couldn't be there then I didn't want anyone there. We didn'T do vows or rings or anything...saving that for the 'real wedding' in July

Re: Married before the wedding day...
a friend of mine did that a few years ago. it was for immigration issues. they had been together for several years and his immigration was coming up, so they were already engaged and figured that they should just do the civil to not have any problems. they went to city hall downtown in may and had their official 'wedding' the following january. i think only the parents went to the civil. no drama, no dress, no rings, nothing.

Re: Married before the wedding day...
A lot of people in the military do that. Mostly because one is going to another base and they need joint spouse. We were actually going to do that so I could get the money for my DH being in OH and separation pay, but we decided to wait till our actually wedding day

Re: Married before the wedding day...
My parents did it. My dad doesn't even know that I know. My father had said something once about them being married a certain amount of eyears and my mom was like not yet and he looked at a calander and said oh yeah not yet. This was in July and their 'married'' date is end of August. So I questioned my mom and she told me they did it because of her parents not approving and they thought my grandparents would do something to mess up their wedding. Anyway I think it's a sweet story and nobody by me and FH (had to tell him) know about it besides my parents, not even my brother knows. Til this day they really kept it a good secrect except that one time a few years ago.
