Mom ordered her gown! FH is pissed...Is this inappropriate? UPDATED -- She canceled the order

My mom ordered her gown this weekend... she sorta mentioned it to me beforehand but never showed me a pic until now that it was ordered... Actually, she told me she was 'considering' it and probably would not get it..... because..... well, it's a bride's gown. She's getting it in Ivory and Gold though... and my gown is white.... well, silk white.

She told me about the colors before she ordered but never told me that it was an actual wedding dress until after. I'm okay with it but FH is kinda annoyed. He can't believe she is wearing an Ivory wedding gown on my wedding day. He says that his family is going to rip her apart talking about her.... I'm afraid to tell his mom for fear of the look on her face....

Anyway... this gown is just for the ceremony... she's changing into a red Versace gown for the reception.... I've yet to see a pic of that gown which is now starting to worry me a little. You see, my mom is a hottie, which is great, but FH thinks she dresses a little 'too young' for her age sometimes.....

FH thinks I should say something to her about the Ivory and he's also pissed at the fact that her two dresses are costing as much as mine (which is alot) and she's not really contributing to the wedding but she can blow over $3k on two dresses that he feels are inappropriate!

So here's the gown... she ordered it in Ivory and Gold.... I'm okay with it... I know she will look good in it and to me, it doesn't really look alot like a traditional wedding gown anyway.... It's Demetrios Couture...
but do you guys think it's going to look really inappropriate??

ETA: She canceled the order....

Well, I emailed her last night (I know, spineless) and very delicately expressed my concerns about the dress... she wrote me back and though the first paragraph could easily be interpreted as the obligatory motherly guilt trip, she said she 'definitely didn't want the dress anymore' and she called and canceled the order. Of course I feel bad.

I then started emailing her pics of some other gowns I thought she might like. She then wrote me back and told me that she canceled the order and Demetrios won't give her her deposit back but she can apply the money to another dress....

I immediately picked up the phone and called Demetrios in Florida, ready to rip them a new one. Unfortunately, the moron who sold her the dress was off today and conveniently, so was the store mgr... it took all my strength not to let loose on the poor woman on the phone (since she had nothing to do with it) but believe me, that mgr is going to get an earful tomorrow.
Misplaced anger, perhaps... but I have nothing to lose by trying to get them to give her her money back.... she had paid the gown in full so I feel like a real jerk....

Anyway, I don't know how she's really taking this because I haven't actually spoken to her (jellyfish that I am) and I couldn't really read the mood of her email...

Sigh. I really just don't need this crap. And they wonder why some us turn into bridezillas!

Thanks everyone for your support and for listening!

I think I have to agree with your FH. I've seen dresses like that in the Bridal magazines. Any reason your mom wants a dress that looks like a wedding gown. Why doesn't she wear the same dress to the ceramony and reception?

I really dont know what to say. My mom is a hottie also that dresses like shes 19 sometimes and im sooooooo worried when it comes time for her dress

I think the dress is nice... if it is a dark ivory and gold and its only for the ceremony I dont see the big deal. The only thing that looks really 'Weddingy' to me is the train or whatever. How much did she spend? hahaha I know my mom is too cheap to ever spend so much on her dress .. for the whole wedding nevermind just the ceremony!
If your ok with it then thats it. Your feelings about it matter the most. I say go with her and let her try it on with you there. so you see first hand what it will look like on her.

Yes, I agree too. It does look like a bridal gown. I'm sorry!

My aunt wore a ivory/gold gown to her daughter's wedding. My cousin had no problem and no one confused the bride witht he bride's mom at all -

I honestly think that your dress is so vastly different enough for it not to be a problem - plus she is changing into another gown - the ceremony is such a short period that no one will even say anything - they will notice the change and talk about her reception gown!

It does look like a bridal gown even if it's ivory and not white, white. A compromise could be telling your mom that it's really not appropriate for her to wear something that color and tell her that she should have it dyed. If she had the same dress (without the train) in champagne or black, I think it'd be much better. My mom used to be a hottie--don't even get me started about how she went to a parent teacher conference in leather pants and a fur coat. I know it's bad, but I'm kind of glad that she's put on a few extra pounds since she turned 50--at least I don't have to worry about her showing up with a bare midriff. Ah, memories of my Girl Scout troup meetings--just kidding

i would tell her to remove the train and let least it would make it look a little less wedding like.

and dye it a different color. I am shocked that she ordered that kind of dress with out checking with you. I can see why your FH is so upset.

why in the world would a mom wear a wedding gown to her daughters wedding - i would tell her it is totally inappropriate - and she doesnt need 2 dresses - the day is about you and not her - what does she think this is a fashion show?

OK I missed the 2 dress part. While I have seen this done before I think it's insane especially in your situation where that money could have gone toward her daughter's wedding.

I personally would feel angry that she was more focused on how she looks than helping her daughter finance the wedding. JMO!

I have to totally agree with you FH.... your mother seems a bit like she is trying to steel your show!
also i would be pissed also if she could spend that much on 2 gowns and not contribute to your wedding
there is no need to wear an ivory dress for your ceremony and then change into a bright red dress... it is not HER day

Now I'm getting worried... I really don't know how to handle this... I can't see the dress on her because she lives in Florida... do you think that if the train was shortened or modified in some way it wouldn't look so bad?

It's a wedding gown so unfortunately it ONLY comes is in white, ivory, and ivory w/gold...

Maybe there's some sort of specialty store she could take it to that would dye it?

I think if she shortened the train it would help.

Is your dress very different from hers?

I think it is inappropriate for her to wear that dress. Tell her to stick with the second dress and just wear that the whole time. Why would she wear two dresses anyway. People are going to care about the bride!

Sorry, I have to jump on the band wagon here, the dress is innapropriate, IMHO. The fact that she 'needs' two dresses would piss me off to begin with. I truely don't mean to offend you, but what is she trying to prove? It's your and FH's day and you should be the stars of the 'show.' Forgetting about that fact that's it's ivory, it's a wedding gown! Why would she even be looking at wedding gowns? If she fell in love with a dress in Bloomingdales and it happened to be ivory or beige (like my FMIL did) I think it would be a bit more understandable. But the fact that she went out and tried on wedding gowns would really get under my skin. You should handle it however you feel comfortable, I just wanted to share my opinion.

It's okay, I'm not offended... I appreciate the advice... the more I think about it... the more upset I get... I just got off the phone with my MOH and she says that I shouldn't let her wear this...she wasn't very thrilled with her either... but what am I supposed to say to my mom now... she told me she already ordered the dress... and it was very expensive... the part that's bugging me the most is that while she told me that it was Ivory & Gold when she was considering it, she never told me it was a wedding gown... why??? She waited until after it was ordered to tell me that little detail...
