Money bag?

Wondering what everyone is doing with their envelopes during their reception. We don't really want to walk around with a satin bag and 'collect' them. I've heard of a bird cage where people can just drop it in at their leisure, or a mailbox. Is there any other way to do this? My wedding is June 9, 2001 and these are things I'm thinking of these days.

What about birdcages?

Using decorated birdcages is pretty popular. This way, guests can just slide the cards through the slots.

What about birdcages?

I went to a wedding this past weekend where they had a box, sort of like a large jewelry box. I think I am going to borrow it.

What about birdcages?

I am planning to do the birdcage idea. The wedding ones that stores sell are so expensive, so I've just been going on ebay and have found a couple I really like. Also my friends mom and aunt decorated a hat box and then just made a slit in the top -- it worked well too, and was a nice little surprise from her family.

Money Bag / Boxes - Do guests feel like its Deposit Here?

I am really not sure about this one myself. I don`t really want to carry around a 'Money Bag' or 'Booster Pouch'. Have you been to a lot of weddings that have a card depository of one kind or another? People were sort of milling around the Mailbox at the last wedding I attended. I heard a few 'What are we supposed to do Deposit Here' type comments. Any other ideas out there?

Money Bag / Boxes - Do guests feel like its Deposit Here?

If you don't want to make it feel like a deposit box, just keep it near by family and guests will come up to you or your parents or whomever and hand you cards as they leave. Then you can put them in the safe keeping box or whatever, as you recieve them.

Try to go around to guests

It`s nice when you go around and say hi to your guests. It gives them the opportunity to hand you the envelope and chat for a couple minutes at each table. I know it is your wedding and you are getting pulled in a lot of different directions between talking, dancing, kissing, pictures but going around goes over much better. Whether you are paying for your wedding or not, you are the host & hostess and being cordial to your guests is part of it. We went around and handed out chocolate bars at the same time which made it a nice little interaction and some people kidded and said 'I'll trade you' (chocolate bar for a card). My husband carried a basket with the chocolate bars in it and then we were putting the envelopes in there too. We transferred them to a beautifully wrapped box which I cut an opening in so I could easily slide in the cards. I kept it out of the way so people didn't feel like the expectation was to 'deposit' their giftcards in there.

Hand Decorated Box

We also did not want to go around with hands out to collect envelopes or have a line form at the end of the reception of people to hand us the cards. What we did was hand decorated a 'hat box'. I bought the box in a craft store. It was round and had a lid. Painted it white and decorated with pearls, lace and flowers nad had a table set at the front of the reception with the box placed on it along with some photos I wanted displayed of my parents wedding photo, my husbands parents wedding photo and our engagement photo. Everyone enjoted having the pictures to look at while they placed their cards in the box.
