Mortgage Bridal Registry Account

Original post by dino1109

FH finally set up the account after it being on his TO-Do list for months!

And We just recieved the little cards to include with the shower invitations!! They are actually very cute. I wish I had a scanner to show you.But on the one side it says 'A Bridal Registry Account has been set up for ______ & _______' The & sign is actually two wedding bands. then it explains what it is. On the other side, which is detachable is a note to us from our friends and family after they deposited money to tell us that they did it.

I honestly don't think a registry like this is necessary on LI.

Most of your gifts will most likely be money anyway. This type of registry will probably leave a bad taste in people's mouths. Some people don't like regular registries either.

At my shower I got as many gifts as I did gift cards and at the wedding we only got checks/cash (except for a bride & groom bear figurine from DH's 10 year old cousin).

would you ever dare to call someone tacky to their face when they tell you of an idea for their wedding?

she wasn't asking for your opinions - it is already done!!! let's drop the barrage of insults, shall we?

if i felt very strongly, sure i would. again, it's not meant to offend, just offering honest advice.

i guess i'm just sensitive then, because i would be offended if i told someone an idea I had for my wedding and they screamed 'Oh my God - Tacky!!' in my face!

just some thoughts/ideas

1. i don't like registry cards...usually your family spreads the word about where you are registered...I would ask them to do this about money as well...

2. as an alternative you could register at a place that gives you cashback (BBB and Fortunoffs both does this) and then return the gifts for cash...

I also threw that idea around (#2) and probably will do it- but I felt even weirder returning everything that I registered for..what does that say? 'hey you tricked me into buying you a gift and returning it?!' I will only be doing that for maybe a handful of things, you know...

Can't we all just agree that it's her wedding and she should do whatever makes her happy. Everyone doesn't have to agree with her choices but we should still respect that they are HER choices and she has the right to do as she sees fit for her situation.

Re: Mortgage Bridal Registry Account

as someone suggested, why not just let CLOSE family and friends know that you are trying to save for a house.

i didn't mean to bash your idea, for that i apologize. i just don't think it will be well received.

sorry for lashing out!

Alright I will tell you IMO I think it is tacky IN GENERAL to do things that either FORCE people (not registering) OR asking for money. BUT this is JMO.

If you need money for a house I think you can casually have family members let their friends and family know you are saving for a home - I think people are sympathetic to that and will want to help - that in itself should be enough to encourage people to help you out. But to straight out tell someone you want money to me is not right.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really want to drop this but also need to comment on this comment....

Like I said previously I am NOT forcing anyone to do this. And I AM registering also to give everyone OPTIONS....

dino - I was making a GENERAL comment and NOT one directed at YOU - I did NOT say YOU were forcing people it was JUST HOW I look at it -

I also think it is important you KNOW where I am coming from - I was giving you my honest opnion - and if it helps to know I also think it is not appropriate to put registry cards in invites at all - and I understand almost everyone does it - that is just how I feel - these is JUST MY OPINION - I do NOT ask you to respect or AGREE with it - but that is simply how I think

Very well said Palebride!! What really is the difference if you register for gifts or money anyway!!! In the end isn't it all money!!!

I agree. I personally wouldn't do this because my family (and my FH's family) is very traditional/old-fashioned and wouldn't like this idea. If we get cash we will put that towards a home. However, times are changing. People are more frank about money and finances. If this makes sense for you, and your family agrees, than I don't see much difference whether you register for a mortgage or for gifts. A registry is a registry is a registry- it's telling people what you would prefer them to give you if they decide to give you something! What you're suggesting is just a bit uncommon. For all we know it may become commonplace in the future.

honestly...who would know? I didn't plan on this...but ended up doing it with a lot on my registry...1 my tastes changed and 2 my silverware set was never completed...and it would have been so much to complete...and we decided that we didn't want a fancy set really - plus DH was laid off and the money was needed...I don't feel bad at all!!!

Re: Mortgage Bridal Registry Account

I don't think it's tacky at all, and I'm really suprised at the strong reactions! I truly had the impression that the younger generations were more accepting of non-traditional approaches to weddings these days... of course some of the older, traditionalist guests will be offended, but this is your wedding, and there's no point in getting gifts that will sit around in dust in your basement. We don't want gifts at all so I'm spreading through word of mouth that we need money (just bought a house), and we aren't setting up a registry either...
