Wow that's a tough one- he probably should have told her- its not terrible that she got a fake ring- I don't know her but I am guessing that it is more about the trust issue.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!
Thats Horrible...It isnt about the cost of the ring but the sentiment behind it,,,,I think to some people its more about the attention then the meaning...unless he told her it is real ...then regardless of reason he lied and there is no need for that ....If I was lied to I would feel that way too

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!
that sux. i think he probably should have been real with her in the beginning and said 'i love you, and i don't have the $$ for a real one, but in the meantime i wanted to give you something in place of a diamond' since he gave it to her and said nothing and she found out it was a fake---i can see her being upset..BUT
that being said--i think she's overreacting about the e-ring and she sounds a little bit spoiled. she's gotta wake up and realize that at least he tried to do something nice, and doesn't want to go into debt to get her a rock. i hope this isn't a preview of her as a bride wanting everything for a wedding even if they can't afford it!

i woudl be upset... im not materialistic either... but if he did not get her a real ring at least explain to her... bc of $ you have this now.. when things get better we can get a real one... or somethign liek that.
if it was jsut bc he was trying to get away with it.. i dont kno .. its just soemthign that needed to be discussed. IMO

Yeah...I have to say I agree with you...I would probably understand if he was a rich investment banker or something, but he's a college student, he had to do what he could afford...most guys wouldn't have even done that....they would've just been like i don't have the money right now so we'll get engaged later and if you can't wait, then I guess we won't get engaged at all...I think people tend to get so caught up in the commercial part of engagements and weddings and put aside the real meaning of it...it's not about how much the ring costs, it's about the meaning behind it...that's sad that she would let something as silly as that cause her to risk losing a good guy...

....but he definitely should have told her instead of letting her find out like that...but still, that's definitely not worth giving up your relationship over...

It does suck he should have been honest. Not to make light of the situation but did anyone see Knocked Up I think your friends fiance could have taken some advice from that guy. He was so honest it was sweet. Besided many couples who are engaged don't always have a ring in the beginning of their engagement. I am a prime example I had my hall before I got my ring.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!
well if FH told me that it was fake i wouldnt mind and i would love it! i waited eight years for that proposal and he could have proposed with a bottle cap for all i cared
BUT
if he lied about it - i would feel a little silly and embarassed - i would get annoyed that he lied and i was showing off a ring that maybe some people could tell it was fake and i had no idea - i mean he let her go get it appraised!
if he DID tell me - i would be one of those girls like 'omg can you believe it doesn it look real' with my close family and friends. . . i am the type of person that has to tell everyone that i got my cute top for $2 at the flea market instead of $100 at the mall - i love a good bargain!

I think its superficial too, maybe she doesnt deserve him... true love isnt about the quality of the ring.... shameful, my ring isnt big and fancy but it is 'my style' and its what fh could afford and all that matters is he 'gave' me a ring.... IMO she is being horrible

I agree, I have to be brutally honest, I think her reaction about calling off the wedding is a bit drastic and sad to say, bridezilla-ish..I understand why she'd be upset but still...

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!
That's crazy! i would be upset only if he tried to pass it off as a diamond but would be okay with it if my FH told me about it and was like I really love you, but money is tight etc...and then would be fine with getting a diamond in the wedding band or like at an anniversary etc. I think its more important that the two ppl really love each other...cuz in all reality its not always that easy to see the difference between a cz and a diamond...and in the end its just a ring....most of the older women at work don't even wear their e-ring...i just see them with their wedding bands.
Wish her the best! I hope things work out.

Re: My friend got a 'fake' ring!
personally i dont understand why girls run off right away to get it appraised, its like they do it brag 'MY ring is balh blah blah carats, look at me...yadda....' but thats what our society has become

yea, she did say she almost punched out the appraiser, as if it were HE that gave her the ring, lol. i imagine she was very embarrassed when that happened, i never really thought of that.
her poor FH though, ive know him for a while, i doubt he even realized that it would have been a big deal! too bad he didnt consult with a woman first! he is definitely a 'yes, dear' kind of FH so i see him going out tonight to get a loan to get whatever ring she really wanted

i have to disagree with you here - i got my ring appraised so i could get insurance on it - FH did not want me to wear it even one day without insurance.
i didnt even want to look at the forms but FH was really proud that he learned a lot about diamonds so he made me look at them - but then i had to get all the information anyway to tell teh insurance company
that is the only reason i got it appraised

but if he CAN NOT afford a real ring then to take out a loan now.. i think is extreme .. does your friend NEED a real ring.. or is she more upset that she looked like a fool?
i thik any ring woudl be acceptable unless for some reason she NEEDS a real stone.

I understand this, not everyone does it for gloating, but sadly ive seen more of the latter....
