I'm taking FH's last name - although I have been having some doubts about it. Neither of our last names are very appealing but I've gotten a lot slack when I said I was going to keep my name. So, ultimately, I've decided to take his... I'm just gonna sound like porno star for the rest of my life...

Re: Name Change
I'm not taking FH's last name b/c i'm in school doing my PhD and i already started publishing under maidenname--its just to avoid confusion, and i dont' want to hyphenate. i think before i have kids i will change myname though, b/c i want my children and i to have same last name.

Re: Name Change
You need to do what you feel is right for you. I took DH's last name b/c it was very important to him. At first I was a little hesitant to change my name, but now I love being called by my married name. The process isn't too bad although I still have a few loose ends to tie up. I changed my name both personally and professionally. It makes things easier that way. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Name Change
Wow - hot topic, Laur! I think you should change your first name to fit better with his last name. After all, a rose by any other name is just as sweet.... Clearly, that's a joke. Anyway, I'm not 100% sold on taking his last name, but hyphenating seems like it would be a pain, all those forms that you wouldn't be able to fit the whole name into, etc. Do whatever makes you happy and causes the least amount of grief!

Clarity: she said and I quote 'I think WOMEN need to take a stand...' so that was why I posted what I did. I don't think it's that hard because I don't! If you want to change, good. If you don't just as good. I could care less if people do or don't, I'm taking my maiden name as my middle name because I like it better than my current middle name. Dear please understand, I'm graduating fom law school in 20-something days, I read things critically and respond as carefully as I can, I have no need to antagonize anyone, I really don't care about board drama that much. She asked if anyone is not changing their name, I commented that I am and my reasoning for it, how we came to that decision etc. Do what you want to do and what makes you happy that is all that really matters!
fine, so we both agree people should do what they want. and no board drama.
and yes, WOMEN need to take a stand. she is taking one by not changing her name and being firm with her fiance on that, and you are takign one by changing yours. great for CHOICE.
btw, dear, i am graduating law school as well, so i am also capable of thinking critically.
do you see how YOU are creating drama here, I never said you weren't capable of thinking critically. I said that I read into things based on the specific language that is used i.e. 'I read critically'! I'm done speaking to you on this matter because it is obvious to me that you have some imaginary bone to pick with me and you can continue to argue with yourself because I am done.

Re: Name Change
I am going to make my middle name my maiden name and take his last name. That way, I keep my heritage (Irish)and take his name - which is darn easier to spell for others (Davis).

Re: Name Change
I am not changing my name simply because I do not want to. I see no need for everyone having to justify their reason or explaining to others why or why they chose one name over another. I don't think I am making a stand at all by keeping my name because nobody has said to me that I have to change my name. Though I am keeping my last name doesn't mean I love or respect my FH any less than anyone else. It simply means I chose to not take his name. I will respond to either name once I am married because people will assume I am Mrs. Hisname.

Re: Name Change
I am 99% sure I am keeping my last name. The main reason I am doing so is b/c I don't want to go through all of the paperwork and crap. Also, I have had my name for so many years and dont want to part with it. FH is fine with it. Not a big deal to either of us. I won't mind being called Mrs. XXXXX, I just don't wan to change everything! I guess you can say I'm being lazy, lol. And as far as the kids thing goes, so many people are divorced these days that having parents with different last names isn't uncommon.
