Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Original post by JuneBabyBride

I need advice really bad. FH and I fight way to much and I know he loves me, but sometimes I think that it isnt enough, he doesn't know how to love and take care of me the way I want. Not in a selfish way just that he doesn't know how to love someone the way they should when he is used to be very selfish himself. I told him that I don't think this is going to work b/c I am not happy and he said fine give me back the ring and acted like it didn't bother him. How should I take that and what should I do, if I just forgive him again and take him back he will keep doing this and walking all over me. I am very up and I don't know where to go from this point. We have a child together that makes things even worse, b/c I also want to take her feelings into consideration.

Meredith
after reading more today and last nite, it does sound like FH can be selfish and not ready for marriage now, whereas YOu are ready.

I would take a break and not call of the wedding yet but think long and hard before your next payment is due whether you can leave like this forever if he doesnt 'change' I wish you all the best and FM if you want to talk

I know this is such a hard decision that you have to make.

Hi.

I really do not know you, but I am really upset reading your post.

I had dinner last night with a woman who was dating her husband for 11 years, during that time that had broken up and gotten back together.

She said that their time apart was the best thing to happen to them, because it allowed them both to grow. Now they are very happy in their marriage and expecting a child.

I cannot tell you what to do, but staying together right now is only hurting Kayla.

He is clearly not ready for a committed relationship,

merdith- I don't want to sound like a huge b i t c h, but it sounds like the only reason he chased afer you is b/c you told him no, you don't want to be with him and that he had to prove it to you. It seems like you are one of his posessions- cars, jetskii- racecar- etc. He is very self centered and when it seems like he can't have something, he wants it even more! That's why he chased after you. If he really wanted to marry you he'd try harder and make you feel like the center of his world. Don't be fooled! He's acting like a spoiled brat. What's up with not calling you for a few days and then acting like nothing's happened? He wants you when it's convienient for him. If he really cared for your daughter, he would make sure that either 1- you have babysitting coverage so you can go to work and make $ for her (referring to the mother in the hospital situation) 2- you don't have to work, he would take care of you and your daughter 3- the $ he gives you is for the both of you, mouthwash included (refferred to earlier statement) and 4- he wouldn't care if there was only '1 year left of freedom' and you can't move in. He has to be a man.

Demand that he be a man or get out!!!!!!

Sorry- this stuff angers me to no end b/c I was almost there myself. I see my mistake and never want anyone to do the same. It is all done in love sweetie!

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Hi Meredith,

I took a while to respond because I really wanted to think about what I would tell you and how.

I am a big believer in LOVE, and RESPECT, NURTURING AND PARTNERSHIP in a MARRAIGE.
From everything I've read, what I am afraid of is that you will not get what you need if you continue with your plans.

I'm definitely not saying that he is not the one for you but what I am saying is that he certainly does not seem ready to give you what you need. Nor does he seem to care.
I believe you should marry someone who could fulfill your needs and be your partner in life. His main goal should be to make you and Kayla happy.
From things he says like he gets another year of freedom, and from you saying he would not like to stay home with and take care of his daughter by himself, I see him as a very selfish man, although I see you already know this to be true.

You seem like a wonderful caring woman. You deserve more. You deserve to love and be loved by someone with all their heart. You deserve for your husband to look into your eyes and know he wants to be by your side forever, and be happy and 100% content there.
You want to be more important to him than jetskis.
You should be able to give your love freely and receive his the same way.

My heart breaks by the fact that you even had to start this thread, BUT b/c you did, that means you feel something is not right.
You should not go into marraige with these feelings.

My suggestion and advice would be to halt everything, have a heart to heart talk with him about the way you feel. Let him know you deserve more, and not short term. Long term forever, and that you want the both of you to take time ( a lot of time) to yourselves to explore your feelings and what you want in life and your future.
That way, you're not rushing into either marraige or breakup, and you can be true to yourself.

Good Luck with everything. Sorry my post was so long.

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Meredith, just wanted to send you to help you through this hard time you are going through. I cannot imagine how hard it is trying to be a mom, and balance what is best for your family, against what is best for your heart and soul. I pray for you that you will find the strength to take the path that is best for you, whatever that may be.

The whole taking time apart thing I am sure is a good idea but we did this before and he said he realized he couldn't live without me in his life and that is why he got me the ring, and he was good and convincing for while but he is the type of person that once things are good and he feels that I am back and not going anywhere he gets to comfortable and starts acting like a jerk again. That is my fear, when will I know that he is actually sincere?

I have called off an engagment before- never having a child though.
It is a very difficult decision BUT I believe that you know in your heart what is best for you and your family. You might want to consider getting professional therapy for a while to help you sort out how you are feeling.
I will tell you that life does go on and the sun does shine again. Better things are in my life now. While I loved my X-fiance, and still think he is an amazing, wonderful man we were just not right for each other. It took time, but I found my 'right' person.

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Meredith,
A lot of other girls, KarenG, Shamee, Shamma and Lizlen, have said exactly what I would say.

You do have resentment in you, and for whatever reason, he may have some resentment with you. There is power in forgiveness, and the both of you have to let that go if your relationship is going to work. You having resentment towards him isn't bad for him, it's bad for you. You BOTH have to be willing to forgive the past, and start a new. Never speaking to eachother as you have. Threatening the wedding. If you choose to move forward, then move forward.

I say this, as I too, had to take time. FH and I were dating for 2 years when he broke up with me. I thought my world had come to an end. He was the love of my life and I couldn't imagine being w/out him. I took most of the blame and really beat myself up over it. A friend of mine gave me this book, In the Meantime by Van Sant. It wasn't until I read this, that I realized that he was selfish and mean and etc.. and to blame as well. I had some growing up to do, and did it. I knew that my future relationships would not be any better if I didn't look at myself. 6 months of being apart, FH came knocking on my window at midnight one night.
It was at this time that he wanted to try again, that I finally had the strenght to tell him, this is what I want in a man. If you think you can be this man, call me. If you can not provide me w/ these needs, do not. It was harsh, but true. I had learned to live w/out him and did not want to be treated the way he had treated me before. (As some of my actions were reations to him)

You repeatedly say 'the way you deserve'. We all know what you mean, but does HE know what you expect and deserve?

My FH and I are polar opposites. I was worried about this too until a wise older woman told me, it's ok to be different. It's ok to have and want different things. The main thing, is if you have the same goals. As long as your goals are the same, the path you choose to achieve them is the only thing you 2 have to work out. Planning this wedding has proven that to be true to me. We do want the same things in life- however, we have different views of how to get there. We compromise, after he thinks I'm crazy for wanting to spend more $$ on a HM than we should etc... but it doesn't mean that we don't want the same big picture.

I've spoken of my cousin before on this board. She married the wrong person. She was so concerned about the $$ and what the family would think if she called off her wedding to this man that treats her like garbage, that she married him. She has been miserable ever since. She thinks a child will help him realize what's important etc.. etc.. We all see how unhappy she is, and it's her fault. I do not feel sorry for her in the least bit. She made a choice, and she allows herself to be treated that way. So be it.

You are in a postition to take control of how you are being treated. However, you have to think of what outcome you want, and how to go about getting that outcome. Your approach to this situation will be key. (I also read Dr. Phil's doing what works- great advice) My best suggestion would be to let go of the resentment, and try to talk to FH from your heart. He should be very open and receptive of your feelings. His response in actions will be greater to you than any words he could possibly say.

I wish you the best of luck in getting through this difficult time. It will all work out, it always does.

FM me if you ever need an ear.

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Thank you again to everyone for there ear and help. I think however I could be wrong but even if I tell him that what I want is blah blah blah and if you can do that for me then things will work but if you feel you can't then we must say goodbye, that he will promise me the world like he has in the past but not come through all the way. Once he gets comfortable with me and feels I am not going anywhere the crap will start again until I tell him we should end things unless he treats me better. It is a never ending cycle.

Meredith: I sent you FM.

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Meredith, I will be a little blunt in what I will say now, so please just think about it.
You talk about what he promises after taking a break, but you didn't mention what you do during this time. Do you reflect on your life with him, and think about what YOU want? Or do you wait for him to get it together and come back? Do you take him back once he makes the promise, or do you wait it out, and see how long his promises last when you don't immediatley get back with him?
These are things to consider. How much do you contribute to this cycle and what do you need to do for yourself to stop it.

Excellent advice Liz. THat is something that needs to be considered.

JuneBabyBride Posted:

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

It is hard to not be together while he is trying to prove himself, it never happens that way, we just wind up back together, and then the cycle repeats itself eventually.

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Meredith you are a wonderful person with so much love to offer. He doesnt deserve you. He needs a lot of growing up to do.

You need to put yourself first? When I was in HS and peer counsler one of the things I was taught when it came to relationships is you are a person before him, you are a person with him and you are a person without him.

The cards need to be layed out on the table with him. He needs to know his behavior is hurting you and this is it, you are about to walk out of his life forever and nothing will bring you back or he can change his attitude right now and have you forever but the minute he goes back to his ways thats it you are gone for good.

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Wow, I just read this thread. I'm so sorry that you are going thru this I really don't have much more to add since the girls have said pretty much everything I would have said.

I just want to say again, that you CANNOT change someone. Trust me, I wasted 6 years with a guy I thought I could change/make him better. You need to do what is best for you and Kayla right now. I am sure that you already know (deep down inside) what you need to do. When I was going out with my ex, I always knew deep down inside that if I married him, I would live a miserable life. But I tried to ignore my feelings b/c I was afraid of being alone or starting over with someone else. It took him leaving for Europe for a few months for me to realize that I did not need him. When he left for Europe, it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. So, I agree with the other girls who have said to take time for yourself. That is what helped me to think clearly and for MYSELF!

Good Luck, my prayers are with you Please FM me if you need to talk or want to get together to talk.

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

Well I just got off the phone with him and said alot of stuff to him that you girls helped me with. I explained the whole thing about him not being ready to get married and if we lived together he couldn't handle the responsibilities of taking care of his family and the way he treats me, I must have babbled on the phone for 2 1/2 hours with him. Alot of what it kept coming back to was the money issue, and how stressed he is about coming up for the money for the wedding and now I want an apartment on top of things. To make a long story short he said numerous times that he does love me and he wants to be with me and wake up every morning and see me and stuff like that, and he thinks he can handle the responsibilities of taking care of us, he is just concerned that come time for the wedding he won't have enough money to pay everyone. I told him that before I even consider taking him back we need to see if we can live together and that you can take care of me and kayla the way we deserve, and I said call me a brat or selfish, but I deserve to be treated like a queeen and nothing less. I said take some time and think about it and make sure you know what yoiu are doing, I dont think you will be very happy if you committ to an apartment to only have me walk out a month later b/c you are back to being a ****head. I said I will this is your last chance to make things right before I give up on you completely. Please tell me if what I did was wrong, right, semi wrong, semi right.

Good for you. I think you did a great thing. You and him need to have this talks, you and him need the communication.

I hope it all works out.

Re: Need Help, My Wedding Might Be Off!!

You absolutely did what is right for you. He needs to know what you need. Everything changes once you live together, and you need to see if means what he says, or is just saying these nice things because now he is scared. Once you make up, and he is not scared anymore, he may go back to the way he was before. He should know he is being tested. Be strong! You do deserve the best!
