Re: Need to vent about E parties
I did not have one because my wedding is 14 months after we got engaged and I thought it was too close to ask people for so many gifts........engagement party, shower and then wedding. We actually have been getting so many gifts since we got engaged anyway.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
MEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!! My ex best friend had an engagment party thrown for her by her then fiances dad...meanwhile...they kept all the money given as a down payment for their house and the same dad paid for their entire wedding!!!!!! Not to make anyone else mad or anything BUT no one was well off enough to throw us an engagement party so therefore we do not have the down payment on our house. I mean to each his own BUT i dont find it fair at all. I got so tired of them and going to them, that I always say no now. I mean a nice dinner, get together...thats different. But these parties that r like weddings..make me sick!

Re: Need to vent about E parties
I sometimes feel some e parties are like asking for gifts. I did not have one, nor did we want one.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
we didn't have one, and in fact we were asked by Al's parents not to - for exactly the reasons mentioned above - they felt like it was asking for gifts. (we weren't planning on it anyway since that would mean another trip to NY). But I don't see anything wrong with them generally- I just don't like the engagement parties that are as fancy as weddings (my sister had a wonderful engagement party in my parents house - very nice, but low key and close friends and family only.)
We announced our engagement at my sister's graduation party (she was fine with sharing a little of the spotlight) so that was our psuedo-party - some that knew we were recently engaged brought gifts if they wanted, but it certainly wasn't expected.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
In many other countries, the e-party is a family reunion to announce that one is getting married, and usually is a family dinner. If any e-ring is passed through family is given/or shown then. The same about shower parties ... many countries only celebrate the bachelor/bachelorette party, and the gifts are usually lingery , the gifts then come only for the wedding from the registry, cash, or any spontaneous present.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
Our e-party was NOT about the gifts. It was about having our engagement blessed by the church. My Fh is Greek Orthodox and I am Catholic. In the GO tradition, an e-party is a very important part of the marriage. Fh's priest came and blessed our rings and our engagement. And we got to say engagement vows to each other which was extra special, since in the GO wedding ceremonies you do not get to say vows. We invited our closest friends and families because we wanted them by our side during this extremely important part of our lives, not because of the gifts. I would be extremely hurt if I found out that any of our friends or families felt the way some of you girls do. And Fh's parents did not have the party for us because they are loaded, but because it is a very important part of their tradition. So please do not assume that everyone does it for gifts. And if you feel that way, then like you girls said, just simply don't attend.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
I am sorry if my post came across as rude or anything else. I know that this is a tradition especially in the greek orthodox church. I shouldnt of lumped everyone together into one category and if it sounds like i did, then i am truly sorry. Although, as I stated before, if I feel that the party is given for the wrong reasons, then yes I will simply not attend anymore.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
I'm not having an e-party. BUT - I do think it's a good idea for those whose families do not know each other, or if there is going to be a big wedding and then the bride and groom to get to know all of their wedding guests.
I have to admit though that amongst my friends I've begun calling them Extortion parties because when they come on the heels of the shower and bachelorette party, and it's for someone I really am not close with, I then feel like I'm invited just to get a gift.
I've begun to refuse invitations to e-parties unless it is for someone I am close to. Then of course I can't wait to go and celebrate!

Re: Need to vent about E parties
I think that occasionally it can be overkill! I did not have one because I feel like it has the same meaning as the wedding! Throwing two parties with the same meaning within a year of each other is a little rude, IMHO... If it is longer than a year, maybe that is not so bad but my friends are social workers, laid off employees, admins and stuff and can't afford the admission tickets to get in the events!! I would feel too bad!!! The only thing I might do is say 'No gifts please' on the invite!!!

Re: Need to vent about E parties
IMO I think showers are way different than an e-party. An e-party I believe should be to introduce the 2 families. It does not have to be large, it can just be dinner, gifts are optional.
A shower is where all the girl's closest female friends come together to shower her to the land of marriage...this is my opinion. I do not think e-parties are handled the way they used to be.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
I would just warn anyone who refuses an invite to an e-party on the basis of it being a solicitation for gifts to consider this -- I don't think I am alone in that I did not have a shower or a bachlorette party. If my pals had decided not to come to my e-party (backyard at my parents home over a year before the wedding) they would have been holding off for nothing, and I would have been very sad.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
I would never miss a friend's e-party. It's just the invitations from couple's I know only casually that I decline.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
I had an e-party because my FI family and my family never really met each other. So we thought it would be a good way to have everyone meet before the wedding. We did it at my mom's house to cut back on expenses and to make it very casual.
I personally do not have a problem with them.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
While I would never decline an invitation to a friend or family member's e-party, I chose not to have one of my own. I felt that anyone who wanted to send a gift would (and they did), and that the e-party money was (in my case) better spent on the wedding. I think it's a matter of opinion.

Re: Need to vent about E parties
I always felt the same way about e-parties, until my SIL threw one for us. I really had a great time and all my friends have had or will have one! I agree with Marcela it really does depend on your own circumstances

I dont mind going to them I have a couple of friends who have the me me syndrome. They never think of anyone else but themselves and then shove it in your face.
