NEW JEWISH WEDDING THREAD

Original post by LaurenF

hey ladies- i'm getting married at Temple Beth El in Cedarhurst and I often feel like a loney temple bride because everyone has all these threads about Westbury Monor, Swan Clun, etc. but no one has a 'temple' thread! I don't even know if I have a hall twin!!!

Re: NEW JEWISH WEDDING THREAD

I was raised 'conservadox' and my FI is reform so we will be incorporting more traditional elements and blending them into a more modern ceremony. In addition to having the chuppah and breaking the glass, I will be having a bedeken in private (when the groom 'checks' to make sure its the right bride and places the veil over the bride's face-goes back to Jacob, Leah and Rachel). We also want our close friends and family to read the 7 blessings insead of having the Rabbi say them all and I am thinking about circling, but havnt made up my mind yet.

I never met with the Rabbi but I called to see if I could have two women sign the kettubah and he said no. I guess I can't be upset since this is his temple and those getting married have to get married under his rules. But for someone like myself who is super liberal, I was taken back a bit. I am not having a bridal party, so instead I am trying to incorporate those friends who I would have asked to be in the bridal party into the ceremony. Four of my best friends will be holding the poles of the chuppah, I was hoping that 2 could sign the kettubah (now they'll have to sign the marriage license) and the other 7 will read the sheva-bruchot. Now that I think about it, I hope he'll let women read the seven blessings---I hadn't even thought to ask. Uh oh....

B/c the signing of the ketubah has legal ramifications there are certain requirements that you need to make it legally binding. However, I dont think that there are the same legal ramifications with the 7 blessings so there shoudnt be any reason why your rabbi wouldnt let a woman recite the 7 blessings, in English at least.

mbg1007 is getting married at B'nai Shalom....we met with the caterers and they were so nice. Their food is amazing too---we happened to go look at it while a wedding was going on and they pulled food for us off of the cocktail hour. It was delicious.

I got married at East Meadow Jewish Center. I love temple weddings. At first we didn't even consider it and then we thought we were both jewish and why not?

It was great. Same caterers as Oceanside Jewish Center and Chaverim

I had two women sign my ketubah. Granted the temple and rabbi were reform, but it had been allowed there. The only requirement was that both ladies be Jewish. DH's friends who were not Jewish, signed the license issued by the state.

There are so many different types of ketubot from Reform to Orthodox to interfaith. I suppose if it means so much to you, you should consider how you will live your lives and how you will affiliate once you become members of a shul (unless you already are as a couple). DH and I were both raised conservative. I lean more towards reform and he towards conservative. When we join a shul, it will more than likely be an egalitarian conservative shul which is how we compromised. Our Ketubah is a Conservative Ketubah with a Lieberman clause which requires him to give me a get should our marriage ever end.

My DH's sisters read the sheva brachot in Hebrew and English and it was and amazing way to have them be a part of the ceremony. Some Rabbis prefer a married couple or a married man to do it. Personally, I think the sentiment can come from people who arent married.

YAY! Another person using those caterers..we almost took East Meadow, but once we saw Chaverim and the date we originally wanted was there, we saw it as a sign...I forget his name, but the guy there was super nice and another person I know was getting married there and loved him, too..best of luck! Who are you using for your other vendors?

Oceanside Jewish Center over here. The place is gorgeous on the inside. It's sort of a hidden gem They were fabulous to me and threw in many extras. At first I didn't want a temple wedding, but I realized that getting married on an alter was the best for me to feel spiritually connected with DH.

my fiance knows the area, but we knew we wanted a small wedding and I'd been to a wedding there previously. The place is gorgeous and definitely exceeded all expectations of what they offer.
