I didn't grow up on Long Island so I am not sure what it all means. I was born in Smithtown, which is where all my cousins grew up, and only moved back to Long Island after college and moved to the South Shore.
So my question is, what is the North Shore/South Shore deal? On the BHB board someone said someplace with that 'North Shore feel'?

too me... imo north shore = richer, more upscale type of people. example.. i go to the walt withman mall, and i feel as if i don't belong in thier.
south shore... i just call it average, you see what you get.
i lived in both (currently north shore)...i think the attitudes are different as well...
jmo...and then again, i dont have money and wish i had money so i may just be jealous

I had a feeling. At work we've gotten into some heated arguments! I can admit that now I live in the middle which is without a doubt the worst!

See, I can see that, but each has pockets of good and bad... Just seems odd to me to call something a 'North Shore feel.' Land's End is on the South Shore and IMO very tastefully elegant (among other venues).

NORTH SHORE IS LIE AND NORTH MOSTLY(WADING RIVER, ROCKY POINT)
I know what areas, I guess I was more asking what the generalizations people make about them are.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
as far as the generalizations....i agree...people look at the North shore as being wealthier more desireable place to be
in relations to the reception halls well i don't think they apply 'generalizations' I know great halls on the shouth shore and BLEH halls on the north shore eta: i don't think there are that many 'bad pockets' on the north shore...VERY few imo

i think there is also that whole gatsby gold coast thing that you'll really only find in places like cold spring harbor to great neck...an old opulance. my personal way of looking at it...north shore has the beach, south shore has the ocean.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
I tend to think WASP when I think North Shore. I know that's not the case, but that's what comes to mind for me.
I also think the North Shore isn't as developed and crowded...many of the homes are on an acre plus, where as on the South Shore, the homes have less property, which means more homes.

Besides the whole Gold Coast thing, for me, South Shore will always be flat and North Shore is hills and winding roads.

See, I always felt the opposite--North Shore more Jewish, South more WASP...
