I didn't grow up on Long Island so I am not sure what it all means. I was born in Smithtown, which is where all my cousins grew up, and only moved back to Long Island after college and moved to the South Shore.
So my question is, what is the North Shore/South Shore deal? On the BHB board someone said someplace with that 'North Shore feel'?

i really can't think of an area on the North SHore that is bad?
As a resident of Huntington Station, I'll tell you that there are plenty of areas of Hunt. Sta. that I wouldn't walk by myself at night (or anytime for that fact). I grew up in Oyster Bay/East Norwich and moved here when I bought my house 5 years ago - and while I don't regret it from the investment standpoint, I do regret it because I would never raise children here - so we'll be moving within the next few years.
I'll add that almost every town has that 'seedy' part to it.

1. i don't consider Huntington station 'north SHore i guess..
2. i definately disagree with 'almost every town has that 'seedy'' while there are towns that do have both..i don't think that it is a 'lot' of them

So we disagree - that's ok. I'll agree on the Station not being north shore proper though.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
I grew up on the South Shore and you couldn't pay me to live there again. I'm not a big fan of LI in general but *if* we wind up staying in NY and moving there, I would only live North Shore.
Stereotype-wise, the North Shore contains the 'snobs' and the South Shore contains the 'meatheads'.
Neither is fully correct but I do personally see a sense of validity in both.

So can I - I can name a bunch, which is why I didn't say that every town has them - I said 'almost'.

I grew up near the South Shore and it's just gotten too crowded for me. But I loved growing up there, especially once I was only enough to take the bus to Jones Beach with my friends. The beach is the one thing I will really miss.

I agree. Although Huntington Station is technically on the NS, I don't consider it 'North Shore'. I consider North Shore to be Manhasset, Great Neck, Brookville, Locust Valley, Port Washington, Old Brookville, Sea Cliff, Oyster Bay etc.
I think of the 'Gold Coast'. There is some really interesting reading material about the area actually.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
'north shore feel' was my post....It had nothing to do with being tasteful and elegant!!!! In fact I used to get so pissed off with people in college who would make fun of people from the south shore. I'm from a very working class area in queens. it wasn't meant snobbishly at all. I don't even know what I meant by that..but NRC feels very 'north shore' to me...it's just a feeling... It had nothing to do with elegant and not elegant. In fact every other place we wanted to look at was on the south shore!
I think I just meant it feels slightly mansion-y

I don't live in Long Island but I have heard much nicer things about the North shore over the South shore.
The North shore has the much nicer neighborhoods IMO.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
I think the culture is very different. When we buy a house, i'd like it to be on the north shore. I just like it better. If you could see where I live now, you'd know I'm no snob. FH lives in Franklin Square, also. If we're doing well enough financially, I'd love to live in huntington.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
I live on the North Shore, and love it!
However, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Bayport/Sayville area on the South Shore.
So, I love them both...for me, it depends on which town you are talking about, then I have my preferences.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
I live on the North Shore and love the landscape - the hills etc...I love it there.
I grew up on the South Shore...I think in either community there are positive & negatives - we all grew up with the same pressures that these kids dealing with today - fancy clothing, cars etc...
My friends who grew up in Merrick w/ me moved back - and are raising their kids (who are like 5 yrs. old) to be more down to earth but they do have attitudes. The little UGGS, the jeans - it's still there. They live on a great street and all the kids are friends and they really have a great support there w/ the neighbors. I am pretty impressed w/ that b/c I didn't have it growing up there...
But the kids in Merrick/Bellmore are just like the ones I see walking around Middleneck Road.
I went through the 80's in Merrick and Bellmore and a BF in the 5 towns -- so I have seen it all. It just a difference of people thinking new and older money -- alot of people on the North Shore are 'old' money - the really rich ones -- though there are loads of people in Great Neck who came over from their country with tons of money and they let you know it.
So I think basically what I am saying is that in a way they are similar but totally different if that makes any sense. I love where I live anyway.
You had to take me kicking and screaming from the city to move out here. I never thought in a million years I would be living on Long Island and be married.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
I'd have to agree with the people who said the south shore is more down to earth, but I think in a good way. Also, feels like each town along Sunrise has a town feel to it, whereas I always felt that was missing in places like New Hyde Park, etc.,but I guess you all are talking about N.Shore only on the shore. I also always think ridiculous traffic and/or congestion on N. Shore because it's always these weird two lane roads and you have to use the LIE which I despise, yuk. Hard to put into words, but definitely different feel from one side to the other. But, of course, ironically its' the opposite once you get out to the end of the island. North Fork much more laid back and more old world charm and South Fork is where the money is. go figure.
