I didn't grow up on Long Island so I am not sure what it all means. I was born in Smithtown, which is where all my cousins grew up, and only moved back to Long Island after college and moved to the South Shore.
So my question is, what is the North Shore/South Shore deal? On the BHB board someone said someplace with that 'North Shore feel'?

I tend to think WASP when I think North Shore. I know that's not the case, but that's what comes to mind for me.
See, I always felt the opposite--North Shore more Jewish, South more WASP...
I'd say that generally for both shores, the closer you get to the city, the greater the Jewish population/communities. S. Shore has the 5-towns area, while N. Shore has Great Neck and the surrounding areas.

Like June262004 said, Billy Joel said something along the lines of
you can either date a rich girl from the north shore, or a cool girl from the south....
is that right Kristin?

And I don't know what you girls define as N. Shore and S. Shore. Many use the LIE as the divider, but for me N. Shore is north of 25A, while S. Shore is south of Sunrise Hwy.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
the north shore is hillier & there are more areas that are secluded. I tend to think of the northshore as the Oyster bay area (since I'm from Bethpage) . The south shore ( all the way south, by the water) has more of a relaxed beachy feel.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
As someone who isn't from LI, but has spent a great deal of time there, I see the south shore as more middle to upper middle class and more crowded with homes and shopping centers. The north shore is more upper middle to upper and is more spread out. I feel more like I'm in the country on the North Shore. I love the North Shore and wish I could afford to live there, but I feel like I belong more on the South Shore. Ever since HS, I have had good friends who lived in Southern Nassau..not south of Sunrise Hwy, just near the Southern State.

Shall I make a list?
I grew up (as a Jew) in Roslyn Heights - North Shore Nassau county relatively close to Great Neck, Sands Point, Manhasset, Old Brookville, Old Westbury, which at the time (and are probably still) were known for being quite Jewish and wealthy. Move a little further east and you have Woodbury, Jericho, Syosset, Muttontown, Oyster Bay and Plainview which tend to meet similar criteria. Go over the county line and you have Dix Hills, Melville, and parts of Huntington. All locations - TAXES A PLENTY!
South Shore towns that were the same socio-economically at the time were: the 5 towns, Merrick and Bellmore.
I would tend to agree that there is more space on the North Shore but perhaps itis more expensive so people choose not to settle there. My parents chose where they live based on the school system (Herricks). It was well worth it for my father to travel to Brooklyn every day for close to 40 years from Roslyn Heights to make sure his children got a good public school education. For the most part, LI schools are pretty darn good as compared to the Bd of Ed equivalents in the city. Which IMO is not a teacher issue but something else entirely. Thats why I don't teach for the Bd of Ed.
I ranted. Sorry. Its late and I cant sleep.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
yes, this does certianly cause drama. my hubby and i live on the north shore in port jeff and we really dont like it. (plus the only way to get around is 347, which is a nightmare at even 2:30!) we both grew up in sayville and miss the quick ferry ride to fire island, etc.
everyone argues over which is better...i don't think that one shore is more 'upscale' because every shore has not-so-nice towns. so, to each his own!

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
DH and I argue over this topic! PErsonally I grew up on the south shore and like it a lot better than the NS. DH is the opposite! He too see it as a Better place to live! But honestly, we grew up in homes that were similar size with similar sized properties. So that is not an issue! We both grew up in nice neighborhoods with neighbors who watched out for each other and where you could walk down the street to a friends house without worrying!
Personally if I had to pick south shore would win because it has more shopping, making it easier when you lead a busy life, the beaches are nicer, a lot of the NS beaches are really rocky, I could go on......
Kristin - During one of the Conversations DH and I had, I did say if NS is so great why did you have to go to the South Shore to find a wife.....thats right to get a cool one!
Oh and there are bad parts of the NS, Parts of Huntington....when we were looking for houses we looked in Greenlawn and found a very less than desirable neighborhood. A neighborhood, IMO is only as good as the people who live there, so even GREAT towns can have run down, 'bad' areas.

I grew up on the South Shore. Went from first grade through high-school there. We always saw North Shore kids as bratty, rich-kids.
As an adult- I like the south shore beaches better... and the people are all the same- except for North Shore in Nassau- which is richy-rich.

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
I was always under the impression that the North of 25A and south of Montauk were the most desirable (and expensive) areas of LI (with other exceptionsm of course) and that the major difference between the North and South SHore was that North Shore was a little older as far as the money.

I grew up in the middle of the island but i like North shore better...I think i am just more familiar with it... I think that where you grow up or what you are more familiar with is the shore you tend to like more

Re: North Shore/South Shore?
I too prefer the North Shore, but I think that is because it is what feels like 'home' to me. I am more familiar with the areas and the towns on the NS.
Although I grew up in CT, my dad moved to Manhasset when I was younger. Then they built a gorgeous home in Old Brookville. I lived there during summers and breaks for college. I had such an attachment to Old Brookville.
In my experience, I found the homes more stately, the houses further apart with more property, and more formal gardens.
A little over 2 years ago my dad decided they wanted to move. I think I was more upset then they were when they sold their house, I loved it and the area. They told me they found a home in Babylon Village, I was like 'where'? hehe. They have a beautiful home now right on the Great South Bay and they couldn't be happier. Moving from the NS to the SS, they said they would never go back, that they found the people to be much nicer and laid-back. They love the village and in a short time know so many people. My sister feels the same way, she lives with the while she is in school for her Masters.
Funny story: during the blackout I was away on business. My hubby spent the night at his friend's house in Bellmore. The next day I returned home and went over to hang out. I was driving down Merrick (Rd. or Ave. I always get them confused) and ended up past Massapequa. I called my hubby to find out again where I should turn and had no idea that I had driven 3 or 4 towns out of my way. LOL! Who knew? I still do not know the order of the towns on the south shore and am still pretty unfamiliar.
Now we live in the middle of the island between the two. I am beginning to appreciate the south shore more. As far as the beaches are concerned, there is no comparison.

Speaking as someone who grew up in Great Neck, I always viewed the North Shore, or at least Great Neck, as the jewish haven of Long Island... growing up, I hated it. But, somehow, I've ended up in pretty much the equivalent in Philadelphia.
