Not feeling much like a wedding.....

Original post by autumnbride10

I know it's been a while since I've posted. It's been a rough couple of months. I lost my mom last month, and I still actually don't believe it. We were supposed to start looking for dresses and really getting down on the planning this month, and I have absolutely no desire to do any more with the wedding. To make matters worse there is more family drama, and I am just ready to cancel everything and elope. FH won't let us do that because he knows we would regret it. We are thinking of revamping everything, and just trying to do a simple ceremony on the beach or in a park or something, but it seems that to put a tent up costs more in permits and caterers than the halls. Have any of you done a simple outdoor wedding that didn't cost a lot? We really want to just save money and buy a house next year, but we still want to do something for our wedding. We just want to make it intimate and simple. Can anybody help us with ideas? We are willing to move the date up too if we had to. Thanks for listening....

So sorry to hear about your mom! I know it is extremely difficult to to even entertain the idea of planning and having a wedding without your mom, let alone actually go through with it. But I think your FH is right, you will probably regret cancelling it altogether. Good luck in any decision you make and try to remember your mom would want to see you have the wedding of your dreams.

So sorry to hear about your mom ... my condolences.

Have you thought of having an afternoon wedding? I've heard that the discount is huge and that way it will give you less to organize and worry about than a park or beach wedding, where you have to rent everything.

I am so sorry to hear about your mom, that's not an easy thing to deal with ever, even harder when you're planning your wedding. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

We had a 'small' intimate dinner party for our engagement that was at a great place in Queens. Very reasonably priced and the food was out of this world.

It's more than likely more expensive and more work on your part to do an outdoor wedding with a tent etc. There are a lot of details that are normally taken care of by an RH that you will have to do on your own. My BIL owns a party rental business in LI if you decide to go this route. FM me for more details on any of the above.

Stay strong.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. I don't know about the tents thing - you should FM Hamptons Bride - she had a tent wedding. I will keep you in my prayers.

I am so sorry to hear about your mom! U must be so upset and stressed! I was going to suggest a destination wedding too... Honestly, I don't know much about prices, but I recently ran into a friend of my FH who got married in Mexico and she said it was the best decision they ever made. It was a lot more intimate and saved them a TON of money. Also, maybe a different location altogether may be a good idea because of all of the tough time u r going through.

I am so sorry to hear about your mom......

My mom has been sick since a month after our engagement and I think this is the main reason why I haven't done a thing. I love the fact that I will be marring the love of my life but have no desire to plan a wedding. I wish we could just elope but ,y FH feels the same as yours....that some day we would regret it.

Try to keep your spirits strong and know that she would want you to go on with your special day.

omg, i'm so sorry. that's really awful.

if you really want to do something small and avoid the family drama, why don't you just run away somewhere? you can book packages for destination weddings for very little money, and it eliminates a lot of injured feelings on the part of uninvited guests bc of the travel factor. also, it might be nice to get away and do it in a setting that's fresh and exotic (no painful associations, ya know). it could be just the 2 of you, or a super small ceremony followed by a nice dinner or something. when we were freaked about money and stuff, this is what we were going to do.

Re: Not feeling much like a wedding.....

Thank you all for all your kind words. It's definitely something that will take some consideration. We are just at that point where we want to be married to get a house and start a family. I just feel like the longer I have to drag the planning out the harder it will be. I want it to be done quick....like pulling off a band-aid. It will be too hard as it is, trying on dresses without her there. I was so looking forward to her input throughout this process that I really have no desire to even plan anything. I would rather hand over the reigns and just show up. I hope my feelings change, but I'm afraid that they won't......

Re: Not feeling much like a wedding.....

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. The pain is unimaginable, I know. I lost my father very unexpectedly in August. AT the time the whole idea of planning a wedding seemed stupid to me, and a waste of money. I wanted to run away and elope immediately. My whole family, especially my mom, insisted that we keep things as planned. It is Jewish tradition that if you set a wedding date, you must keep no matter what -- a death should not change wedding plans. I asked a Rabbi why, and he replied that there was a talmudic story that stated if a funeral procession and a wedding procession met at a crossroads, the funeral procession must give way to the wedding procession, because the celebration of life and love takes precedence. He put it much more eloquently.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I totally understand what you are going through, but wanted to advise you not to make any rash decisions.
My FH and I are going through the wedding as planned.
I did not do any planning at all for a few months after. We are just now booking our vendors. Its very bittersweet. At times I'm excited, but at other times, I'm ready to bawl. We saw a DJ last night, and he did a mock wedding introduction, and when he introduced the parents, I teared up. Things like this will happen, its inevitable. But I find it important to remember to count my blessings as well. I know, its easier said than done!

Anyway, that was a mouthful, my hands actually hurt from typing so much, sorry!

As far as financing, if you really can't afford it, you can cancel in Suffolk county and get all but $100 of your deposit back as long as its more than 6 months of your wedding date.
I only looked at outdoor locations on the water.
The Swan Club -- $70 pp for a Sunday afternoon or evening
Riviera -- $72 pp for a Sunday afternoon/evening
Coral House -- in the $60's for a sunday evening.

Those were the most affordable places I looked at.

My sister got married at a restaurant on the bay in Rockaway Beach called Pier 92. It was on the water, outdoors and tented, and very affordable. The restaurant provided the tent. She only had immediate family -- literally 36 people only.

Hope some of this helped.

Re: Not feeling much like a wedding.....

I am so sorry to hear about your loss, my heart goes out to you and your family. I am sure your mother would want things to go on as planned and just know that she is always with you. I truly believe in that. I cannot even imagine what you are going through, but you should know that everyone is here for you whenever you need to vent. you will get through this and look back and be happy that you did. I think a destination wedding sounds like the perfect idea if it fits in your budget. I saw a wedding at Beaches in Turks & Caicos and it looked magnificent. It is a great place to look into if you have children invited to your wedding. Stay stong!
