I realize this may be an unpopular notion but I wonder, has anyone decided not to have children?
Just curious.

Re: Not having children?
I plan to have kids right away but I respect people's decisions not to have them. Obviously, it is a very personal decision.

Re: Not having children?
When I was younger I had my mind set that I was never going to have kids. I think now I would like to have one or two, but I know plenty of people who have decided not to have kids.

I have my reasons as to why I don't want to. Some people act like I'm a terrible person for it, but I don't care what they say.

Re: Not having children?
i agree, if you want them-great and i plan on having them but i totally respect and understand if someone does not want to have them...
having kids is a huge decision and it is life-changing so if you don't want it or any part of you is not into it-- by all means, you shouldn't have them and then it's just not for you. i mean, why bring people into this world unless 100% of you is completely devoted and commited to raising them and wanting them?
interesting post!

omg! why do people think you are terrible b/c kids are not your cup of tea?! i mean, it would be worse if you had them b/c society says you should have kids and then you don't treat them and love them the way they deserve! that would be much more terrible... wow! way to respect someone else's different feelings!

Re: Not having children?
We are not having children. I am 33 and he's 42 so we won't be changing our minds.
I agree it's less popular, but every couple we know without children are extremely happy with their lives & their decision, as I know we will be

I am sorry you had that said to you, some people are really prejudiced - if you are not EXACTLY like them, they shun you.

Re: Not having children?
I think its so unfair for people to judge someone because they dont want to have kids. Especially since a person can change their mind if they choose. Once you have a kid there is no reversing the process. As long as you and your DH/FH agree than thats what truly matters.
A lady once bit my sisters head off becuase she said she may not want to have a second child. She called her selfish for not wanting to give my niece a sibling. The nerve, Very weird
Right now dont want one.. eventually I would like to have maybe one.

Re: Not having children?
we are still undecided.
People do make rash judgments about you and your partner when they get wind of such things. We tend to keep it to ourselves for that reason. Plus I honestly do not have answer for people right now, we just do not know.
As the wedding gets closer, the uncomfortable questions are becoming more and more frequent.
The assumption I get most often is that there is something medically 'wrong' with either one of us. I find it offensive.
The second most popular ASSumption is that we are 'selfish people' who will likely 'grow up and out' of such thoughts. I find that cruel.

We're not - we're older and it's just not in the plan.

Re: Not having children?
My old roommate is super ambitious. She said that children were the bane of a woman's career. She has no plans on procreating. She said if she feels the need to be motherly one day, she could adopt.
I totally accept and respect her feelings on this subject.
I, on the other hand, can't wait to have kids.

Re: Not having children?
FH was very against having children which I found out well into the relationship and I didn't know if I should stay with him, but now after living with my parents, who babysit my four nieces and nephews every day, he realized what he would be missing if we didn't have any, so now he definitely wants them~

Re: Not having children?
I am very excited about having children, and plan to have quite a few, god willing.
It drives me absolutely mad when people have issues with couples who choose not to have children, and I've spoken up about it several times when I've been witness to it. How is it any one's business besides from the two people who made the decision?!
Not to mention that some of the happiest, healthiest, and well-travelled couples I know don't have kids!

People tell me that I'm selfish. Or they say to me, 'Well, why did you bother getting married?' They can think whatever they'd like; if they knew me and knew the reasons why, they'd feel pretty stupid for saying anything. But it's usually people who don't know me make that assumption.

Re: Not having children?
It's so weird - I am not having kids and I am pretty vocal about it and I've never gotten any negativity about it.... or maybe I did and didn't notice because anyone who was negative toward me JUST because I wasn't having children is obviously stupid and not worth listening to

Same here. You'd think I was killing off the human race, the attitudes I get about it.
Our answer is definitely not now, possibly not ever. If you don't like it, too bad.

Total agreement! My career is A#1 right now. Maybe I will change my mind but right now I can acknowledge that I'm a pretty selfish person and I can not imagine giving up my lifestyle to take care of what I would deem a burden. I realize that doesn't sound so nice but at least I recognize my character. I won't have any 'oops' that I'll be dumping off at my parents house or day care. That's not good for anyone, particularly the child. Some people just aren't meant to be parents and shouldn't be parents and I think I fall into that group. My point of view is certainly not the most accepted, but it is what it is. I don't think that makes me a bad person.
