I've been thinking of going on BC for awhile, but never made the leap for a few reasons. One is FH and I don't live together, so it's like I'd be medicated all the time and we only get to DTD infrequently. Another is my mom is REALLY religious and if she found out, she'd freak out, and a third is that I'm worried about the side effects.
Now that AF was late this month, it not only caused me to freak the heck out, but it also means AF will likely start on the first day of my honeymoon, so I'll likely me miserable for half of it. UGH. So this is prompting me to want to get on BC. Hopefully I can use it to move AF, or maybe it will be less.
I;m really REALLY nervous about this, I'm really bad, and I've only even ever been to the gyn once, and I'm worried I'll gain the weight I've been trying to hard to lose or get headaches, etc etc.
Can you give any advice?
TIA!

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
OMG! I have been stressing over the VERY SAME THING today!!! I just got mine (today is the 9th, I am getting married on the 9th). And I have been getting on the 9TH FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS!!!! Uggghhhh!!!!! So frustrating! I get severe cramps, and it pretty much puts me out of commission for a few days. I don't want to feel like this on my wedding day. I tried BC in the past and honestly had to be hospitalized over it a few times (it took a while for them to figure out that is what was causing my SEVERE migranes). I vowed never to touch the stuff again, but I know plenty of girls who love it! I also gained weight on BC. It just doesn't work for me. I have heard that there are ways to make it come early or later though...ways to throw off your cycle. One of my friends just told me today about Humphres 11...sold at Rite Aid and it's $9.99. I'm definitely going to be looking into this!!

I've been on BC since I was 14 on and off for medical reasons. You can express these concerns to your physician and see which one she thinks is best for you. You try it for a month and if you don't like it, you can always go off or switch. You'll know pretty quickly if it's going to affect you negatively or not, but there are sooooo many girls on BC and most of them are happy on it.
I've been on Seasonique to minimize the frequency of my periods since I have endometriosis and I have no complaints, but I know a lot of people have said they don't like it. A lot of people like Yaz and it's generic Gianvi... and Yaz has a new produc out called BeYaz which is the same pill but with folic acid added, which never hurts either.
Different pills have different hormone balances so your doctor can tailor the pill to the side effects youre concerned about (Eg, weight gain)
Plus, as a woman you should go to the gyn for a checkup anyway.
Good luck!

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
One of the physician's assistant's I used to see said Yasmin can help you LOSE weight, which would also be great.
I did got for my check up just over a year ago, and I did get a reminder call a few weeks ago, so I guess it's good timing to go for a checkup and discuss this.
Because my family is so religious, I find it hard to discuss, like it's not a normal thing to talk about, you know?
ETA: For example, one of the reasons it took until I was like 27 years old to go to the GYN was I think when i was in my late teens/early 20's I asked my mom and I said 'oh I think I'm supposed to start going to the gyn since I've over 18' and she absolutley FREAKED out and started screaming and asking WHY I wanted to go and why I would need to go.

I was on it till 3 months ago and I am going back to dr to get on it again because fh is just annoying me. You really should talk to your doctor. They have so many bc out that are using lower hormones with have even less side effects. I was on loestrin 24 fe which will even shorten af visit if you tend to have a longer period.

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
We are very similar! I've tried BC twice, and both times it has made me miserable enough that I rather just DEAL with not being on it. First time I bled for 2 weeks. Second time I had TERRIBLE acne. I know you're supposed to find the 'right' BC, but I didn't have the energy after 3 months. I would have toughed it out, but I was also just worried it didn't WORK! And all the shifts in my period drove me more and more nuts. I am nutty and raised by a religious mom. This psychotic nature is my burden to bear haha.
Now that I've scared you, who's to say you'll have the same experience? Your wedding is real soon, so I say just give it a try. If anything, it might shift your period enough to get it out of honeymoon zone.

You should def. go to the doctor every year! Soooo important! I think that is your best bet. Go to your doctor and discuss your concerns/questions.

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
Well I've been on it for 13 years for medical reasons as well. But I've been on several different formulations and you will definitely have to just figure out which one is right for you. You will definitely feel different, emotionally, you might experience mood swings more frequently and more intensely, but in the end you will find one that works for you.
Personally, I never gained or lost any weight with BC, even when I switched doses. It did help my skin though. Just talk to your Dr and be honest, I'm sure you are not the only one in your position that he/she has seen before!

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
I've been taking it on and off since I was 17. I was on ortho tri cyclen (this was before low hormone was the rage) and it made me crazy! Teenage hormones plus varying amounts of hormones each week made me a powder keg. I took Yasmin (before it became Yaz) and I had no issues. Also did the nuva ring for a while (but it gave me too much discharge). Now I'm on generic seasonale and I get spotting from time to time, but it's not terrible. I never had any weight gain (other than from my own inactivity and eating habits- NOTHING to do with BC), nor did I get acne or headaches, actually my migraines stopped when I started taking seasonale, but I could attribute that to a lot of things (moving, hitting my mid 20's). But if you want to go on it, you need to go to the GYN before your next period. You can only start BC on the Sunday after your period starts. And it takes about a month to work and for your body to adjust.

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
My mom is the same way. Other moms dragged my friends as soon as they were 16 but I was 23 when I went by myself
It is important to go though. It's not as bad as you may think and they will be able to answer all your questions

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
I have been on BC for 10 years- and have switched products 4 times. The patch made me crazy, the ring made me depressed, and the first pill I started made me crazy AND depressed. My nurse practitioner finally put me on a low- dose BC and it works fine- no side effects and I am sane again.
But like it has already been posted- everybody is different, and some product that doesn't work for one person may work for another.

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
Ahhh..you're scaring me! I wish I had started sooner, but now isn't bed because FH moved into our new palce which is only a few blocks away so I can keep most of the pills there and just keep a few at a time in my purse somewhere. If my mom found the container, she'd freak. Pathetic, I know.

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
Im on ortho tri cyclen lo and really like it! I'm actually really anti-pill because I think it is really bad for you but after going off yaz last year because of all the bad commercials I started breaking out horribly and decided to go back on one that has a low dosage. Personally, it takes me about 3 mos. to fully adjust to BC so I wouldn't be going on the pill if my wedding was in June...but I do think you should discuss with your doctor.

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
I started on BC about 4 years ago I think, for health reasons. I started w/ Yaz and it ******. I had unbearable cramps right before I got my period, my weight was going up and it was just terrible. I then switched to Orth-Tri Cyclen Lo (Sp?) and it's been great. weight is pretty stable unless I stuff myself w/ food lol, skin's not bad either, and my cramps are controled.
It really depends on your body what BC works best for you - I would chat w/ your gyno to tell them what you're looking for and what you're trying to avoid and they can then recommend things
I DO NOT recommend Yasmin. Myself and everyone I know that took it made us very depressed. JMO

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
I have been on BC since my son was born. I did not want to have another baby until he put a ring on me...lol.
I have been on Artho-trysyclen lo (SP?) for over 2 1/2 years and swear by it. It doesnt have as much hormone so you don't gain weight and all the other side effects....
When you go see the doc, also ask about a pill that can postpone AF. My mom took it when she went on a cruise a few years ago and it worked well for her.

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
I wouldn't try yasmin.. I liked it a lot, but the problem is there is a generic for it called ocella and a HUGE side effect from it is weight gain... I didn't realize I had been switched to the generic and I gradually gained 20 pounds over a few months and found out through researching that a lot of girls had the same thing happen to them
I am on Microgestin now, and I have to say its the best I've ever been on... AF is really short (2-3 says max) and always starts on monday and is gone by thursday.. I've been on BC since I was 16 (10 years) and must have tried about 8 different brands

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
It really is a person by person basis.
My sister and I both started Yasmin when we were 16 and 15 respectively, and I lost 10 lbs and had no side effects. She gained 30 lbs.
I'm on Zenchent now for the last 6 months and no problems at all.
My youngest sister just started Seasonique and she is still getting breakthrough bleeding.
It all depends on your body - best thing is to tell your doctor your concerns.
Also, FYI, it sometimes takes a couple of months to 'kick in' so i would start ASAP so you're not having period issues on your wedding date which is only 3 months away!
Good luck!

Re: NWR: Any girls on BC?
Do you think it's too late? That's kind of what I figured when I hit the 6 month mark, but then when I realized i was going to get AF on my whole honeymoon I was all 'oh helllllz nooo'
