Ive worked in three districts.. I LOVE my district now, the first one i HATED and the middle one was just ok.I teach englihs and got a job right out of school BUT it was very difficult and I got hired like a day before school started as a year leave replacement... I finally have my probationary two years and districts later.

Re: NWR Best school districts to work for
I worked in 2 districts (the one I am currently in and one before this) The first one was a wealthy district in Nassau which paid very well ($51k starting with no Masters) now I am in district in Suffolk ($54k with Masters plus 30 credits)Although the one in Nassau paid better, I HATED it. The parents were completely too involved, and we had to base grades on that. The politics were unbelieveable and it was very disheartening, especially for a new teacher. It was unreal.
Now I am in good district in Suffolk and LOVE it. I wouldn't go back - even with the better pay.

I'm still in school now and my major is english (secondary). Do you guys think that it is easier to get a job in a secondary position rather than elementary? Everyone tells me there is no shot of me getting a job right out of college...but I thought secondary wasn't that tough.
ok, I don't mean to laugh at you because I know you're just repeating what you've been told... but that's hilarious. Secondary not that tough? In English?I've been applying since January in secondary English, and it's basically impossible. Unless you know somebody, you're lucky if you even get interviews straight out of college, never mind a job.
I REALLY don't mean to be rude or anything - just after six months of fruitless job searching, hearing the field called 'not that tough' is just something I have to laugh at, if only out of self preservation.
I agree with the other ladies here - count your lucky stars if you get a job anywhere. You just don't get to be choosey if you want a teaching job on long island as a new teacher.

That is totally not true. I am an English teacher and I got my job right out of college. I student taught at my district and they hired me. Many districts will be having many retirees after this year. My district is losing three English teachers after next year!

yes, but you have to keep in mind that for every teacher retiring, there are numerous more waiting to fill their place. Trust me, it is far from easy to find a job as an English teacher. Having student taught in a school gives you an in, and makes it a whole lot easier - you got lucky - you had an in, and there was an opening. Unfortunately for most of us, it's a lot harder than that.

Re: NWR Best school districts to work for
I am a teacher and agree that it is very difficult right now to find a job in any subject except math and certain sciences. My school district is ok, not the best, not the worst but I am thankful everyday for the job I have and for the wonderful people I work with. For those of you trying to find jobs....Good Luck and don't give up, many districts are still hiring over Labor Day weekend!

If you read correctly what I wrote I said that people DO tell me it is hard to find a job, and thatI didn't think it was. I am not looking yet, so there is no way of me knowing. I asked because I wanted some opinions.

I would say English is slightly easier than elementary. It is really being at the right place at the right time. For both elementary and english you will probably have to start as a leave replacement or permanent sub, but remember those positions often lead to full time jobs!

I hope you don't think that I was being rude-- I was just being reassuring by saying 'That is totally not true' -- there are jobs out there if you are a good interviewee and if you know your stuff. It also helps to student teach in a district that has openings. Good Luck and don't give up hope before you begin your quest. BTW-- There are definitely more availablities in secondary schools raher than elementary schools.

Foreign Language is also another high-need area, specifically Spanish. I teach Spanish and ESL in Valley Stream, my husband teaches English in West Hempstead if you have any questions FM.

For pay & benefits info, you should get the salary book from SCOPE. They list starting salaries for most districts w/ & w/out a Masters and then the different steps and benefits for each district...I think it's about $5

I think it depends on what you teach. It's really tough to find a position teaching English, but districts are begging people to teach science and math.
Thats not really true- I heard the same thing when I was graduating with my secondary science degree (with certifications in both earth science and biology), and it was still really hard to find a job. There are still hundreds of people sending in resumes for a few positions.
