I have a standard one. Theoretically, I could take him on a plane, but a miniature dachshund would be easier for a traveler. They're not amazing with kids but no worse than other smaller breeds. They are usually extremely affectionate and cuddly, but still love to play. They can get back problems but if you are aware of it, you can often protect them from injury.
FM me for more info. I'm a dachsie-holic and I'm active on 2 dachshund owner websites.

sorry i'm partial to large dogs.....i love my german mix!!!!
How do you guys find time to take care of your dogs? My FH and I have been arguing about whether or not to get a puppy after we're married. We both work like 9 to 7/8 everyday, later for me during December, January, February. He says we won't have time to take care of one. Plus its cruel that we'll be leaving it at home all day while we're at work. I'm thinking, how do people who have jobs manage this?

I hava pomeranian. He is the sweetest dog ever. Very friendly and lovable. He does Yap quite a bit though. I am a pet groomer and have had a lot of experience with dogs. You should definately check out a local shelter before buying. Sometimes they have small dogs. Many mixed breeds are easier to train than pure breeds and it's always nice to save a life. Otherwise, if you really want a pure breed, check out :
Maltese Shihtzu Pomeranian(but they do bark) Cockapoo Yorkie (they can be very independent tho) Japanese Chin (I never met a jap chin I didn't like)
These are all dogs you can put in a bag and carry them everywhere!

I have a Boxer but honestly, it is a difficult breed requiring a lot of CONSTANT attention, exercise, all sorts of skin allergy problems...although they are wonderful dogs and I love mine to death I wouldnt recommend it.
One of my attorneys just got a Charles Spaniel...I think that was the name of it...it is a medium size dog and very easy to train. They are also very well behaved and great followers.

Re: NWR - Can anyone recommend a dog?
There are a lot of sites that ask you questions about what type of dog you like and then recommend breeds based on your answers.
I have a wheaten terrier, a great dog but probably not for you because 40 lbs is too large to carry on a plane. How about a malti-poo? I think they are so cute!!!
Graciep0o - taking care of a dog when you work all day is hard - look for breeds that don't require a lot of exercise. My dog is ok being home alone all day, but has a ton of energy at night. Consider adopting a 1 year old dog - puppies really can't be left all day.

FH and I work opposite hours most of the time so we manage just fine with Chewy. We take him out 3 times a day and he is very happy. We made him a very comfortable little house in the kitchen that he stays inside all day long. We don't lock him in or anything, he has the freedom to roam only the kitchen, but he likes it in his little house. Sometimes we both work all day long, but he is just fine until we get home.

Re: NWR - Can anyone recommend a dog?
we just got one!!!! my husband surprised me with a puppy this weekend, a little boston terrier we named Piper. we did a lot of research, we've been talking about it for awhile and the bostons are good with children, don't shed a lot, are med-small sized (with females being on the smaller side 14-18 lbs), are very smart and easy to train (they love to please. only down side-they do snore and can be gassy-but we can deal with that. they are energetic, although piper has been mellow with short streak of Eng and they are very much indoor dogs-they do not do well in extreme cold or heat!
good luck--i am loving being a dog owner!!! (she's already going outside and we've had her two days-she'd 9 weeks old!)
ETA-they don't bark much either!

Re: NWR - Can anyone recommend a dog?
My FH and I are currently saving to get a Brussels Griffon. (more commonly known as Verdell from 'As Good as it Gets'.) They are known for their even temperment, nice size and coat (short hair, hardly any shedding), and for being very intelligent. They are SO sweet and they have almost a human expression to their face, those big beady eyes have so much personality! I urge you to look at the AKC.org site and look up the Brussels Griffon. They are a small to mid-size dog. They will be, when full grown, about the size of a jack russell. So they are little but not so little you'll feel like you are going to break it. You should rent As Good as it Gets too b/c how that dog is in the movie is a classic example of that breed's temperment. Good luck!! No matter what you go with, you are doing such a nice thing by owning a pet! You'll love it!

Re: NWR - Can anyone recommend a dog?
I think it's all about how you raise them. It's true that some dogs do have generic tendencies to be either agressive/snippy, but if you start training them from the day you bring them home, you'll have a better shot at a gentle, loving pet. I heard NOTHING good about Akitas, who get to be about 140-160 lbs!!!! But, my baby was the sweetest, most cuddliest thing ever! EVERYONE loved him, including strangers, and people that were afraid of dogs. He never snapped at anyone. Now we have a Chihuahua! Quite the size difference, I know. But our apartment is too small for anything big. We dismissed any negative comments about the little 'Ankle Biters'. We were told they were nasty, shivered, and bit little kids. Well, if you want to see what the little ham is like, you can check him out in my Community Album. He is the friendliest, funniest dog, and he would rather bite his own paw than bite a child!
So all of that said, GET A DOG THAT YOU FEEL A CONNECTION WITH! SHOW IT LOVE FROM THE BEGINNING, & IT WILL SHOW YOU LOVE IN RETURN. GOOD LUCK! ADOPTING OUR LITTLE TUCKER WAS THE BEST THING MY FH & I EVER DID!!!!
