Someone lives upstairs in my house and smokes (not in the house, he is not allowed to).
But the place smells so bad. I guess because he carries the smell on himself.
Do you have a magic 'recipe' to make the smell of cigarette smoke go away?

Re: NWR: cigarette smoke smell
I wish I did. My brother and his wife actually leased an apartment and moved out weeks later because the smoke from the guy across the hall drove them crazy.
They do make anti-smoke candles but I don't know if they help. Potpourri? Maybe. Try anything.

Someone told me if you put out a bowl or 2 of vinegar it will take away any smell (fish/burnt popcorn & I'm sure smoke), but then you have to ask yourself which smell is worse!

I heard this too! My mom bought a car once that someone smoked in and she did this for a few days and then took the bowl of vinegar out and it worked!

Oust works, but it really sounds to me like he is smoking INSIDE.

I don't think he does but I think it's when he comes inside. It's the back door leading to his stairs. Of course, that's where the door of the downstairs is also and it's my 'livingroom'. FH talked to him already and he said he was not smoking inside.

I lived in a house where the tenants were not suppose to smoke inside...that didn't stop them and they always swore they didn't.
YUCK!
I don't know what it is about that smell, but I find it to be so repelling. I think the only thing that might help is an air purifier and frequently spraying frebreeze in doorways, etc.

I second spraying Febreeze! My FH's brother is a smoker and it lingers on everything he touches. (he wasn't allowed to smoke inside too)..I used to spray that stuff all the time when I went to their apartment!

Re: NWR: cigarette smoke smell
I had this problem when FH's uncle was visiting, and it drove me crazy. And he didn't smoke in the house either. it was the smell carrying over. i brought an air purifier from target. Best thing yet. All of the candles and febrezee in the world didn't work. (and I'm a big fan of both)

I smoke - FH does not. When I'm at his place I go outside to smoke. It does not smell inside the house. If it did, FH would be running around with a can of Lysol 24/7 and have candles burning - the way he gets when he is at my place.
That is why I said it sounds like he is smoking inside. But, if you're convinced he really isn't, and it is because of the connecting doorway, ask him to move away from the door when he is outside smoking so it doesn't carry in from outside. I would also take a towel and stuff it at the bottom of the door to your apartment so odor doesn't travel in under the door.

Re: NWR: cigarette smoke smell
The best thing that cancels smoke spray...is citrus.
If you have a candle that is orange...citrus will kill some of the smoke smell. They actually even have smoker's candles..and are usuall citrus based that help smell.
Look on line..the most fragrant of them all is Gold Canyon Candle Company....they have an orange one...it works wonders.

Re: NWR: cigarette smoke smell
My FIL is a heavy smoker and is constantly smoking outside. My in-laws house never smells of cigarettes. When my FIL enters the house of course he has a strong cigarette smell which remains on his clothing and skin but does not stink up the entire house.
It seems this person you are referring to may be smoking inside the house. If he were to step outside for a smoke you wouldn't be able to smell it from your apartment especially being your on a different floor or at least thats what I think
Try lighting Yankee candles, the aroma is pretty strong and they make great scents

If you have extra $$ I would also suggest the Ionic Breeze....

Re: NWR: cigarette smoke smell
I really like Febreeze air effects. It smells nice...not like flowers on top of smoke. I think what I have is called mint refresher or something like that. I tell myself it's like a mojito for my apartment.
