I leave for work at 6AM and I am home around 5PM. If I want to defrost chicken cutlets that I take out at 6AM should I keep them OUT or put them in the fridge?
Thanks!

Re: NWR: defrosting question!
I would wait until the are defrosted before puttin them in the fridge. Putting them in the fridge would slow down the thawing out.

Re: NWR: defrosting question!
i always take them out the night before, but the other day i forgot. i left at 8am, took out 2 chicken cutlets from the freezer, put into the fridge and got home at 6 to cook them. they were not 100% defrosted yet, but i was able to cut them easily and it was defrosted enough to cook with. i'd say youd be fine with it being in the fridge.

Re: NWR: defrosting question!
I leave mine out a lot, but it's better to keep them in the fridge. Fill a little pan with a little cold water, and put the cutlets (in package still) face down in the water. It will defrost them faster. If they are still a little frozen when you get home, put them in a bigger tray of water when you get home, they should be good in an hour.

i would leave them on the counter the night before - right before you go to bed and then in the morning before you go to work pop them in the fridge

Re: NWR: defrosting question!
I usually take something like that out the night before, right before I go to bed let it defrost over night and then in the AM put it in the fridge to keep it cool... mind you I'm usually up to do this around 4am when I feed Cooper.

Re: NWR: defrosting question!
omg no do not leave them on the counter...i have taken 2 food manager classes and that is a big no no...do u know that food u leave out after 20 minutes its starts growing bacteria and the bacteria doubles every 20 minutes. after that. Think about that the next time u leave pizza on the counter and go back to it 2 hours later. u have to store things at the right temp to prevent this. if your looking to make the cutlets tonight take them out of the freezer and put in the fridge.. when u get home take them out and put in a bowl of cool water on the counter..they will defrost 30-40 min later..

Re: NWR: defrosting question!
This is from the FDA website- I wouldnt leave chicken out of the fridge ever
Safe Defrosting FSIS recommends three ways to defrost chicken: in the refrigerator, in cold water and in the microwave. Never defrost chicken on the counter or in other locations. It's best to plan ahead for slow, safe thawing in the refrigerator. Boneless chicken breasts will usually defrost overnight. Bone-in parts and whole chickens may take 1 to 2 days or longer. Once the raw chicken defrosts, it can be kept in the refrigerator an additional day or two before cooking. During this time, if chicken defrosted in the refrigerator is not used, it can safely be refrozen without cooking first.
Chicken may be defrosted in cold water in its airtight packaging or in a leak proof bag. Submerge the bird or cut-up parts in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes to be sure it stays cold. A whole (3 to 4-pound) broiler fryer or package of parts should defrost in 2 to 3 hours. A 1-pound package of boneless breasts will defrost in an hour or less.
Chicken defrosted in the microwave should be cooked immediately after thawing because some areas of the food may become warm and begin to cook during microwaving. Holding partially cooked food is not recommended because any bacteria present wouldn't have been destroyed. Foods defrosted in the microwave or by the cold water method should be cooked before refreezing.
Do not cook frozen chicken in the microwave or in a slow cooker. However, chicken can be cooked from the frozen state in the oven or on the stove. The cooking time may be about 50% longer.
i leave mine out on the counter and try to 'cat proof' them

Re: NWR: defrosting question!
I know about health and all... but my grandmother defrosts by leaving it on the counter and my mother defrosts the same way... so I would defrost by leaving it on the counter as well!

I wouldn't be scared. I'm not. Obviously the FDA says it's bad, but leaving it on the counter is the way I've done it my whole life, that's how my mom did all throughout my childhood, and I'm still alive and kicking.
