So since FH & I are buying a home, I know he wants a dog more than anything, so I thought for his birthday I would surprise him. Therefore, I need to start looking into breeders.
Here's my question, we both wanted a big dog like a yellow lab, but I'm thinking since we are buying a small home with a small backyard, I think a medium size dog would be better. Can you suggest some breeds?? FH hates small dogs so something about 50-70 pounds would be ideal.

Bri's puppy is a mix of a black lab and spaniel. She's about 70lbs and the sweetest dog EVER. She's very friendly and soo cute!
The other dog is a beagle...bri's family had him for maybe a week, but the dog bite his mother's face so they had to give him away. he was a cutie but not as friendly as seven (the lab)

Boxer Pug Weimereiner American bulldog (not the stumpy ones)
09er crashing.... I have a boxer and I just wanted to warn the OP that unless you have a lot of time to spend on a dog, do NOT get a boxer. They are high energy and although they can play in any space big or small, they always want to play with a person! They are, in my opinion though, the cutest dogs around. Check out my little man, Jeter.
A pug! My family and I HATED small dogs all my life- we've had mutts and a saint bernard/mix and a lab/mix. but i somehow ended up with my pug joey and he is the cutest happiest most friendly and most loved dog. all my family wants to take care of him all the time!

Whatever puppy you get instead of buying something expensive from a breeder I would definitely say to try North Shore Animal League on that days that they get their 'puppy deliveries' There are so many there on those days.... Its cheaper and you're giving a dog that wouldnt have one otherwise a home...

i grew up with a pure bred siberian husky. it had crystal blue eyes (danielle like). i loved him. those dogs are beautiful
i am a fan of Chow Chows, Akitas, Newfounlands, Samyoeds, and American Eskimos
there are far too many dogs that i dont like, but basically any kind of lap dog i will pass on. and my best friend got a boxer about a year ago... and i can do without that thing
youre so funny. and theyre GREEEEEN!!!

i have a Boston... BEST DOG EVERRRRR! seriously.. never peed in the house.. doesnt shed or chew VERY smart and so loyal and playful but not obnoxious and definitely NOT a barker! i would get another one in a heart beat

Re: NWR: Dog Suggestions
i second the idea of adopting. there are so many lab mixes in the shelter.
but otherwise i would also recommend a french bulldog. there are so many in my neighborhood they seem to be popular.

i think this is what I am leaning towards, we got our kitten from North Shore, he is so bad, but I love him....I would like to help a dog who needs to be adopted.

Re: NWR: Dog Suggestions
i love labs & retrievers.
beagles are great. my sister has one & a friend of mine has 3 of them (all rescued). however my sisters beagle is crazy. she sleeps all day (because everyone is at work & school) & then at night she is wide awake & runs around like a maniac. she also chews everything. wood, plastic, peoples clothes, shoes, eye glasses, pocket books. she gets caged at night because no one trusts her around the house. my sisters beagle only howls once in a blue moon. either because she smells another animal or her chewy is under something. unless you have a well fenced in area where they can run around for hours its not such a good idea.
when she goes upstate for the weekend, she runs like crazy for 4 or 5 hours at a time. will only come back to the house for water & if you don't catch her she will go out again for just as long.
