So since FH & I are buying a home, I know he wants a dog more than anything, so I thought for his birthday I would surprise him. Therefore, I need to start looking into breeders.
Here's my question, we both wanted a big dog like a yellow lab, but I'm thinking since we are buying a small home with a small backyard, I think a medium size dog would be better. Can you suggest some breeds?? FH hates small dogs so something about 50-70 pounds would be ideal.

I'd say go with a mutt. My uncle got a lab / collie mix. She's black with some brown patches and she is the SWEETEST dog ever. She also weighs about 60lbs and was adopted from North Shore.

Have you considered adopting a dog. I got my dog from North Shore Animal League. He is a lab mutt and quite possibly the best dog ever. Designer dogs are really nice, but the ones who really need good homes are out there too.

Cocker spaniel!!! That's ours in my pic. I wanted a big dog too but we live in a small apartment in NYC so I went with a medium size dog (he's about 30 lbs). He's awesome - loves to fetch etc. so similar to big dogs that way but also a little mush ball and loves to be at your feet snuggling all the time.

Boxer Pug Weimereiner American bulldog (not the stumpy ones)
09er crashing.... I have a boxer and I just wanted to warn the OP that unless you have a lot of time to spend on a dog, do NOT get a boxer. They are high energy and although they can play in any space big or small, they always want to play with a person! They are, in my opinion though, the cutest dogs around. Check out my little man, Jeter.
08er crashing....I have a boxer/bulldog/super mutt....and his name is Jeter!!!!
