1. Sponsors pulled out REALLY quickly, so therefore LOTS of $$$ lost. At the end of the day, it's business.
2. Also because it is a bit of a double-standard. There is such public hoopla around this situation that I'm sure the bigwigs felt incredible pressure to appease the public with a 'proper' punishment.

I wasn't going to read this thread either but if everyone out there thinks this guy was fired because of racial comments, you need to look again.
everything that happens in this world is business related. CBS had to fire him to prove to their sponsors they want no part of the drama. So I agree 100% with what Adana is trying to convey.

Re: NWR- Don Imus??
If they fire Imus, then they should also proceed to take all degrading rap music off the shelves - no one should make money by degrading woman, their own race, or promoting violence.
I think they are going a little far with Imus. Do I think it was right? no but worse things have been said and those people still have jobs.
I was listening to 92.3 this morning and they were going over an article written by a well known African American columnist and I think he really hit it on the head..there are other things that should be the focus..

Re: NWR- Don Imus??
maybe he will go into rehab and everyone will excuse his behavior and continue to spend money on him (ala Mel Gibson)....
Seriously though, I don't think that what he said was any more offensive than 75% of rap music, so if people aren't offended by one, I'm not sure how the other is so much more offensive.... and of course it is all about money, entertainment is a business, people dont run radio and tv stations for fun. As someone else pointed out, it is so ridiculous, the news is innundated with Anna Nicole's baby's father and Sanjaya on American Idol and now Imus...the world is falling apart, thousands are being killed in darfur, tons of people are losing their homes to the collapse of the ever sketchy subprime mortgage market, I think people should focus on the things that are really a mess in this world and pay less attention to stupid entertainers who say ridiculous things that get them even more media coverage.

Along the lines of what others have said; Now that he's been fired officially, I have to say that I don't feel sorry for him. Some people will say that he made a mistake and shouldn't lose his job over it. However I feel that CBS fired him more because of the sponsors pulling out of the show. If you are the head of CBS your main concern should be public appeal and also sponsorship. Sponsors make CBS their money. Higher ratings on shows bring in higher profile sponsors and therefore you can charge more money to sponsors who want their product/company advertised on the show. Maybe what Sharpton and other community leaders did in pushing for Imus' firing was a factor but I think the main reason would be for CBS to show support to their sponsors who obviously don't want their product associated with Imus. I also don't feel bad for him because in our society I feel a need for accountability. We teach children (at least my parents did) that every action has a consequence. Imus losing his job is a consequence of his own actions.

I second that..... You have said just about everything that has been on my mind. It is a terrible situation and words is one thing that you can never take back - So in light always be careful what you say - you never know who you might offend.

I wasn't going to comment on this post, but I had to say this article was very well written and makes some good points......I don't think there's anyone who doesn't think Imus is a moron for what he said, but this article really points out, if you're going to restrict one, why not restrict them all......I think identifying negative stereotypes and gender bias is crucial, acting on it is much much much more important.....let's not end with Imus......this behavior should be condemned by all who use it.
This was my favorite part of the article, FYI, this was written by an African American journalist (and I quote)..........
In the grand scheme, Don Imus is no threat to us in general and no threat to black women in particular. If his words are so powerful and so destructive and must be rebuked so forcefully, then what should we do about the idiot rappers on BET, MTV and every black-owned radio station in the country who use words much more powerful and much more destructive? I don’t listen or watch Imus’ show regularly. Has he at any point glorified selling crack cocaine to black women? Has he celebrated black men shooting each other randomly? Has he suggested in any way that it’s cool to be a baby-daddy rather than a husband and a parent? Does he tell his listeners that they’re suckers for pursuing education and that they’re selling out their race if they do? When Imus does any of that, call me and I’ll get upset. Until then, he is what he is — a washed-up shock jock who is very easy to ignore when you’re not looking to be made a victim. No. We all know where the real battleground is. We know that the gangsta rappers and their followers in the athletic world have far bigger platforms to negatively define us than some old white man with a bad radio show. There’s no money and lots of danger in that battle, so Jesse and Al are going to sit it out.

What ever happened to Free Speech?
I don't agree with what he has said, but where do you draw the line?
I agree. The same people that hide behind the first amendment, are the same people who b*tch and moan when something is said that offends them.

Whats ur opinion on this issue? Im curious...
Hmm... so here's what I think:
1) He's said crap like this for ages, so it's kind of a surprise he finally got fired.
2) what he says is nothing compared to what some of the conservative pundits say on the radio and tv ALL THE TIME. (Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Rush, etc).
3) It's a great way to distract the country from all the crap the gov't is doing wrong.
Woah, woah, woah SG...
Hang on a minute... you can say what you want about Ann Coulter because she is VERY extreme (and sometimes cruel and hurtful) and yeah, I can see Don Imus being in that category sometimes b/c he is extreme too but I have NEVER, EVER heard anything insulting from Bill O'Reilly... he actually seems like he goes OUT of his way to be fair towards people and not say things that are inappropriate... ESPECIALLY things that are racist or biased... The same goes for Sean Hannity.
They are two guys that are very professional and serious about their jobs and there's nothing on record that they have ever said that is racist or discriminatory.
So, I can totally respect your opinion on Ann Coulter and others that I know are really out there and very extreme but I'm an avid Bill fan and I like Sean Hannity too and they have never said stuff like that-- they are definitely not mud slingers and are never cruel or racist... ever.
Sorry, I had to defend my man Bill O

I can't stand how the media makes us fall prey to this constant coverage. As a regular news viewer, I cannot avoid this story.
He said disgusting things, but his show has been saying over the top things forever. He seems to be very apologetic about it all and the stations are only letting him go because of all the loss of sponsorship, they were pushed to do it.
I hope that the Al Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's will stay on top of everyone who makes comments like these from now on; black, white or purple. Like a previous poster stated, 'what is good for the goose is good for the gander.' Otherwise its just pure hypocrisy on their part.

Re: NWR- Don Imus??
ridiculous...
this is America and we have the right to the FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
this country has gotten TOO SENSITIVE. He is not advocating slavery or lynching etc etc.
Don Imus was mimicking a RAP LYRIC. Granted, it was ignorant and considering he is on public airways, he should have thought twice about what he said, but it was not coming from a place of hate. His opinion is his livelihood in talk radio. Not everyone has to agree with it, and not everyone has to listen to it. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks the same way.
Personally, I dont care for him. But I do believe EVERYONE has a right to say whatever they want to say. I believe there are MANY more people in this country that are more influential than Don Imus.
He has apologized. He CONTINUES to apologize, and I think its awful that MSNBC has fired him the night before he holds an annual charity for children with Cancer (yes, white, and black children) and has removed his telethon number from their sites.
I would like to refer everyone to this column: http://www.kansascity.com/182/story/66339.html
He made a MISTAKE. He made a stupid comment . We're at WAR for Christs sake. More importantly, BURKHEAD IS THE FATHER OF ANNA NICOLES BABY [/sarcasm]
I think Al Sharpton should go after rap artists etc who use the same language CONSISTENTLY if he wants to restrict language from us..... they have more influence (sadly) than Don Imus does. And does anyone NOT remember that Jesse Jackson once referred to NYC as 'Himeytown?'
Did we NOT forgive him???
People make stupid mistakes. And I really dont think the Rutgers basketball team was truly affected by this had the media told them they should be. Hell, people (celebrities) are criticized unfairly every day.
Its funny, we have the freedom of speech, but apparently it depends on what race you are. If something offends me (how many times have i heard non white people making fun of the stereotypical white person) I just dont acknowledge it, I don't listen. I don't care.
If it was coming from a place of hate (as it apparently was in the Michael Richards or the Mel Gibson case) I wouldnt feel this way.
I'm outraged b/c as someone whos mother listens to Don Imus and someone who knows something about him, it's not coming from a place of hate at all.

While I think it's awful they fired him... I have to stop my feelings and realize what this lady just said up there ^^^
It makes sense. I dont have to agree with it, but I understand it.

Re: NWR- Don Imus??
Yes people have said worst things in the past but that doesn't make what he said right. He deserved to get fired. People make sexist and race jokes all the time and think its funny when its not. The hoe comment is absolultely wrong but the nappy head took it to another level. How can you claim that what he said brings publicity to the basketball team??? Thats outrageous. People in this country expect people to 'just get over' racist comments. But this is deeper than just his comment. It's this countries continued racism and injustice to people of color.
As far as the charity thing.... he can still give money to the children. I dont think him being fired will really effect the amount of money this country raises for cancer patients. And while I 100% support charitable causes especailly for children I also support strong black women. Oh lets forgive him because hes having a chartiy function? So if all racist in this world have charity functions should we forgive them to?

Re: NWR- Don Imus??
well, just for the record, I feel compelled to clear up something with the 'freedom of speech' arguement.
Freedom of speech (as long as it does not infringe on others freedom) is a right of an individual.... when standing on their soapbox either on their private property, or on public ground.
Freedom of speech does not occur at the work place. Your employer is allowed to censor you at their discression.
Live radio / TV hosts must be cognescent of what is considered 'acceptable' content by not only the FCC, but their broadcaster/employers. If they go over the line (as in this case), they risk censorship, fines, suspension, or being fired. All perfectly legal, and if Imus wasn't asleep at the wheel, he might have clammed up prior to committing career suicide....
oh, and I regretfully also must remind everyone of Bill-O's settlement out of court for sexual harrassment and TONS of really misogynistic behavior in the work place. Alas, he isn't always that professional....
You said the term 'freedom of speech' a number of times in your explanation and analysis of this situation, all i have to say is that theres a VERY big differance between freedom of speech and oppressive discrimination!!
