What ever happened to Free Speech?

I don't agree with what he has said, but where do you draw the line?

I agree. The same people that hide behind the first amendment, are the same people who b*tch and moan when something is said that offends them.

i think what he said was gross but honestly i agree with stealthgroom there is much worse being said by others and also many more important world issues that warrant much more media coverage. i dont think he should have gotten fired tho. honestly no one went after the hip hop djs when they made fun of the tsunami victims or for the fact that they play music with similar degrading lyrics, im not attacking oprah because she totally embarrassed the white guy on her show because he had 'white guy rhythm' and couldn't dance. he apologized lets just get over it and focus on real issues

So I think everyone seems to be on the same page that what he said was wrong and many feel that firing him may be a bit too severe because it had been going on for a while and is not uncommon with other media types. here's the thing, let's not fool ourselves into thinking this guy was fired because of the high moral values of his bosses. It's quite simple: advertisers were pulling out because of the negative attention- no advertising means no money- no money means no show.

i agree. The underlying motive and decisions made in business and advertising is always about $$$$.

Along the lines of what others have said; Now that he's been fired officially, I have to say that I don't feel sorry for him. Some people will say that he made a mistake and shouldn't lose his job over it. However I feel that CBS fired him more because of the sponsors pulling out of the show. If you are the head of CBS your main concern should be public appeal and also sponsorship. Sponsors make CBS their money. Higher ratings on shows bring in higher profile sponsors and therefore you can charge more money to sponsors who want their product/company advertised on the show. Maybe what Sharpton and other community leaders did in pushing for Imus' firing was a factor but I think the main reason would be for CBS to show support to their sponsors who obviously don't want their product associated with Imus. I also don't feel bad for him because in our society I feel a need for accountability. We teach children (at least my parents did) that every action has a consequence. Imus losing his job is a consequence of his own actions.

Al Sharpton needs to keep his mouth shut....This guy likes nothing better than to be in the news.

As stated before...Imus has been saying this for years. This country is too sensitive and pc about everything. And if the news didn't blow the situation out of control we wouldn't be discussing this right now.

Did you know there are white girls are the team...I'm white and I have nappy hair, am I offended...no I could care less.

Can we move on please????

I'm glad you're not offended however I was offended moreso by the 'ho' distinction than the nappy-headed part. I think many women were offended by that statement and I'm sorry but all the people doing stuff like this lately, Mel Gibson, Michael Richards and now Don Imus then after they say the crap they apologize for it. Sorry but how many lemmings do you need to see jump off the cliff before you realize what's coming at the end.

on the topic of being offended...

I don't know, I'm personally not offended by the comment, but on the flip side, my opinion doesn't count as much as an African American woman's would, because it's obviously directed to them.

BUT, one of the reasons I haven't been offended with his prior misogynistic comments is becuase I've always been rather dismissive of Imus... and howard stern, ann coulter, and all other windbags.

I think the REAL reason why people are so upset is becuase it brings his ATTITUDE and perspective to the limelight. Everyone likes the fantasyworld where people are not judged by their ethnicity, gender, religion.... but every couple months there's another incident that reminds people that it's just a fantasy.

Al and Jesse are right on something.... rap music has GOT to stop using all these derogatory terms... becuase it desensitizes people to think that they're actually not that bad.... And MTV has to stop encouraging back-up dancers to dress like prostitutes... Otherwise, people once again are desensitized and begin to think that way about all women....

What ever happend to respecting each other???

There is a double standard out there. I am sorry, but if an African American said a White racist remark, they would never be fired.

Why is it OK for one group to say these things and not another in jest? Look at hip-hop artists, comedians?

The rule should apply to all!

IMO there have been examples of people being chastized who are African American also. Back on one of the hip hop stations here one of the DJs Starr was fired because he repeatedly made fun of current event topics the one that ultimately got him fired was the DC Sniper case where he played gun shots and made whatever stupid comments. He got another show on another network and was fired for similar crap on there. Don't say an African American would never be fired because it has happened and I also believe that if someone else had made comments like Imus saying something about 'white hos' or what have you there would still be an uproar.

Actually that is different........what that DJ did was horrible for people losing their families. I look at things differently though. I look at people like IMUS as an entertainer.

Though not the correct thing to do....I believe it was done for entertainment purposes. Chris Rock makes fun of white people all the time.
Hot 97 constantly does too.

I persoanlly am not offended! So if someone called me a white hoe in the same context...it probably wouldn't bother me.--that's just me!

I think all these shock jocks say things just to get a rise out of people.--Right or wrong, they all do it!

I do see your point how it would offend others though. I am not saying what he did was right but you have to admit there is a serious double standard out there.

Hmm... so here's what I think:

1) He's said crap like this for ages, so it's kind of a surprise he finally got fired.

2) what he says is nothing compared to what some of the conservative pundits say on the radio and tv ALL THE TIME. (Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Rush, etc).

3) It's a great way to distract the country from all the crap the gov't is doing wrong.

I tend to agree with all of these points.
Another question:
How is it that CBS drops him but someone like Eminem isn't dropped from his record label for all of the homophobic stuff he has said?

I don't agree with what Imus said, but there is a double standard here.

I dont think Howard Stern can be lumped in the same category as Rev. Al Sharpton. This is an opportunisitc vulture of a man who seeks only to further his own notoriety. This is the man who RUINED the lives of those innocent police officers Tawana Brawley falsely accused of rape all those years ago. Howard Stern makes fart jokes and cracks jokes. Come on.

Sorry but Ive been a Stern listener since I was 14 and my brain is neither rotted or corrupted. He makes me laugh!! and i feel i must defend him.

I agree!

Was what he said inappropriate? Yes. Imus is a shock jock and has been doing this stuff for years. The media has suddenly grabbed hold of something and wants to make an example when ordinarily we would just let it go.

Personally, this country is way too sensitive and pc about everything. We have gotten to the point where we are not sure what we can and cannot say anymore for fear of offending. In the context that he said what he said, I wouldn't have been offended and plenty of other people would not be as well.

We all live with blinders on thinking that we have all these freedoms when in truth, we are a quite restrictive country. You can say what you want as long as it fits into the pc mold.

I have loathed Al Sharpton since the Tawana Brawley days!!! I will never forget that case and how he tried to use it for his own political advancement.

Sorry I guess I just don't getwhat you're saying. Imus had his own radio show, the guy I was referring to also had his own show and was fired because of things being said to upset people. I really don't think there's a double standard. As I said before Imus was fired because of sponsors so if all radio stations said they wouldn't play music from a particular label because of homophobic comments or calling woman b!tches and hos then I'm sure these musicians would clean up their acts. When money is involved that's usually when action follows.
