FH and I are Latinos and it's sad to hear him say that he now stops leaving his full name (i.e. the Latino last name) on voicemails when searching for apartments.

Thats awful!!

I couldnt agree with you more. In addition what im not understanding is why many woman that have replied are saying he made a mistake and are letting the racist remark overshadow the fact that he called women 'hoes'. This is something that any woman regardless of race, should never ever say, 'its just a mistake'.

I don't think any man with a wife, mother, sister, or daughter should let that slide, either. Or really, any human being.

What ever happened to Free Speech?

I don't agree with what he has said, but where do you draw the line?

i guess free speech depends on who's speaking... and who the sponsors are! So strange ive heard soo much worse in th media its kind of crazy.

i agree with stealthgroom and portjeffbride too. its frightening how the media diverts everyones attention. who owns the media? oh yeah...right!

I would rather try to understand & forgive and maybe learn from someone than maybe hold anger and aggression towards them.

but then again, THATS JUST ME AND HOW I COPE.

And does anyone NOT remember that Jesse Jackson once referred to NYC as 'Himeytown?'

Did we NOT forgive him???

I say we fire Jesse Jackson! (AND Sharpton)

I agree that no one should have to put up with racist/sexist comments or any other discriminatory comment for that matter... and thus, I don't think anyone who is offended by any comment should have to get over it... What I do think is that this guy is getting so much attention for all of this, it will make his new sirius contract even better, he will make even more $$ despite his remarks, and now a ton more people (including the old guys in the bagel store in someone's post) are walking around discussing what a nappy-headed ho is.... ignorant people who have an open stage will never stop shouting at the wind (as in people like Imus). The best punishment would be to ignore him altogether, give him no publicity and force his career to flounder.

FROM WHAT?

What does Al Sharpton DO??? I just see him in the media any time there is potential CONTROVERSY

To me, he ranks just (above) Paris Hilton for using himself as fodder and attention.

(hats off to him for making a living though)

Carolinep24, I hear you... but it's hard to forgive someone who's made repeated 'mistakes' without changing his ways. I think what you're missing is how this is regular behavior for him. It's not like this is an exception. just go to dailykos.com and search for Imus and see how many things you come up with around previous times he's done this. Or mediamatters.org. check em out.

Sadly, I think he ranks below Paris in my book... at least she doesn't go around publicly accusing people of criminal acts without the facts to back them up just to get some tv time. I honestly think people like Al Sharpton are hugely detrimental to civil rights and equality.

You know what I really want to know? How many of you have actually heard or seen him saying the comment? Everyone's talking and writing about it and I find it hard to believe that nobody makes reference to the comments about the similarities to a spike lee movie he makes after the ho comment- to me that when the fuel to the fire was added and things blew up. and please people stop with the hip hop argument- this isn't tit for tat. For those of you who do that- how many of you have heard a hip hop album? please don't make mention of 2 live crew or ice-t. people who listen to hip hop don't listen to them. lol. I'm interested in seeing what follows after this frenzy. and for those that are saying 'i've heard much worse', how do you measure what's worse regarding his comments if you are not a black women in this country. BTW- imus is still the biggest nappy headed ho of all. he looks like the oldest tranny in the world with with a beat up 'do.

Hmm... so here's what I think:

1) He's said crap like this for ages, so it's kind of a surprise he finally got fired.

2) what he says is nothing compared to what some of the conservative pundits say on the radio and tv ALL THE TIME. (Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Rush, etc).

3) It's a great way to distract the country from all the crap the gov't is doing wrong.

Just want to respond to one thing here...
I have never ever heard Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly etc ever say anything remotely close to what Don Imus said.

'Nappy Headed Hos' is a MUCH different and worse thing than calling terrorists nasty names thay they deserve. And also calling out Congressmen/women for the hippocrites they are.

The before mentioned pundits have never in my recollection make a direct derrogatory racial slur to a group of fine citizens who certainly did not deserve it.

Don't be so anxious to jump on the 'I hate the conservative radio talk show hosts and their opinions' band wagon just because you don't like their opinions.
This is a free country and they have a right to express their opinions. What Imus did was NOT expressing his opinion, it was a FLAT OUT UNINSTIGATED AND DIGUSTING RACIAL SLUR. There's a big difference there.

Woah, woah, woah SG...

Hang on a minute... you can say what you want about Ann Coulter because she is VERY extreme (and sometimes cruel and hurtful) and yeah, I can see Don Imus being in that category sometimes b/c he is extreme too but I have NEVER, EVER heard anything insulting from Bill O'Reilly... he actually seems like he goes OUT of his way to be fair towards people and not say things that are inappropriate... ESPECIALLY things that are racist or biased... The same goes for Sean Hannity.

They are two guys that are very professional and serious about their jobs and there's nothing on record that they have ever said that is racist or discriminatory.

So, I can totally respect your opinion on Ann Coulter and others that I know are really out there and very extreme but I'm an avid Bill fan and I like Sean Hannity too and they have never said stuff like that-- they are definitely not mud slingers and are never cruel or racist... ever.

Sorry, I had to defend my man Bill O

I agree 100%

Although I do like Ann Coulter and think most of her thoughts on subjects are just the plain truth, and the truth hurts sometimes. I do agree she can be extreme in her delivery and it would serve her purpose well to tone it down. But we're not talking about delivery here in the case of Imus.

I wonder if this poster ever listens to any of these people on a regular basis to be qualified to make such a broad statement about them.

In regards to Ann Coulter's delivery, there's no way that can count towards her 'fa@@ot' remark about Sen. Edwards. that's clearly a deragatory homophobic remark unless she's comparing him to a bunch of sticks used to create a fire- which I highly doubt.

I don't remember hearing about her making this particular comment but I will believe you are right. I don't agree with her 100% all the time and like I said she is extreme.
But Ann can't be put in the same category as Sean Hannitty and Bill O'Reilly.

Let's not just pick on the conservatives here... wasn't it Jesse Jackson, the savior of the world, who once referred to NYC as 'heimy-town'.
However he has been the anti racism hero crusader/ protester, along with Al Sharpton, throughout this Imus saga.

The irony here is Jesse Jackson ended up asking for forgiveness around 1981 after the negative press he received when he referred to NYC as 'Heimy-town.'

Why is it okay for Chris Rock to use derogatory terms about blacks, whites, asians, etc. but not okay when Imus does it?

The Point I'm trying to make is that racism goes BOTH ways here. It's not just 'crazy right wing extreme white conservatives' who may make the comments as some would like us to believe.

On the other hand how far do we go in trying to control what people say and eventually control what they think, like 'thought police'.

No one wants to say it or hear it, so I will. Unfortunately, I doubt that there isn't one person who hasn't had what could be considered a semi-racist thought or opinion run through their brain at one point in their life. Whether towards man, woman, black, white, Asian, Christian, Jewish, Italian or Latino people, etc. Before we start pointing the finger and running around aghast and appalled maybe we should examine ourselves. Not that any one of us would say something quite as derrogatory as Imus, but where do you cross the line?

Bottom line Imus' comments were inexcusable and deplorable and I'm not surprised he was fired. MSNBC and CBS had no other choice.

Re: NWR- Don Imus??

I'm not a big fan of long-winded arguments such as these, but I wanted to share something I heard this morning that I found very interesting.

Jim Kerr, the morning DJ on Q104.3 (classic rock) was having a discussion with Donald Trump on this very subject. Being a radio guy, Jim mentioned something that might not occur to us...

who's being hypocritical here? Simply, the producers of the station.

They are the ones, after hearing Don say his usual crap, encourage him to go even further. They know it gets ratings. They even urge him to attack other groups and be even more controversial.

Now it blows up in their face....and they fire him to save their OWN face. Pathetic. They're just as much to blame.

And Donald Trump (not that he's a role model or anything) made a good point - Imus handled it VERY poorly. The way he groveled and then made excuses....he should have made an apology statement and let it go quiet. Now it's a media firestorm.

I'm not condoning Imus's comments by ANY means. But our culture has started to allow that kind of 'slang'... you hear women calling their own friends 'hos.' Granted, it's in a bizarre affectionate sort of way...and Imus was definitely more on the offensive level. I think this has gone way out of hand and the media coverage is just feeding it beyond belief. It's sickening.

I loved Helen's post- it has to stop in ALL areas....you can't just attack one person for this.
