Everyone is dishing Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.. And yes they may be characters, but who else is standing up for black people on every occasion possible? We don't have Martin Luther King, we dont have Malcom X and by no means am I saying Al and Jesse are even comparable to them but they are the only ones still fighting for black people. So despite their personalities that people may not be fond of, I applaud them for constantly standing up because if they don't make noise about these things people are just going to continue the same racism and oppression that this country has had towards black people for 200++ years.

Hmm... so here's what I think:

1) He's said crap like this for ages, so it's kind of a surprise he finally got fired.

2) what he says is nothing compared to what some of the conservative pundits say on the radio and tv ALL THE TIME. (Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Rush, etc).

3) It's a great way to distract the country from all the crap the gov't is doing wrong.

I agree -- as for Howard Stern, I'm a fan. I think HS says things that shake people up but I don't think he down right says racist things. I think he's more respectful of people than what comes out on the radio - which is, lets just say it - for ratings. For shock factor.

a few more things, then I promise to try to do more things like give a groom's perspective on wedding stuff. No, really!

mavirella- what Imus said was atrocious. When I said I've heard other say worse things, I meant things that I've seen as repeated attacks on communities of color and progressive communities, with malicious intent. Death threats, constant slanders. You can do a search on youtube for 'Fox Attacks' and see more of the putrid crap they put in the air.

Lools- I have to respectfully disagree with you. I'm not jumping on the I hate conservative pundits bandwagon. And I do think people are entitled to their opinions. My issue with the afformentioned list of pundits is the way they smear folks using intellectually dishonest arguments as well as made up and serious distorted information. Rush Limbaugh? Michael Savage? Ann Coulter? O'Reilly? Hannity? Malkin? Glen Beck? Neil Cavuto? These folks all spew a lot of venom on a regular basis. Feel free to check out Media Matters for reams of half truths, unretracted misstatements, outright lies, insults and threats.

I agree that I have a problem with some of the hip hop lyrics out there, but Joan Walsh at Salon says it better than me:

I hate the misogyny of some rap music -- it's not all misogynistic -- but rappers didn't invent sick notions of black women as sexual objects in America; those ideas have an old, old history here, going back to the days when the chains black men wore weren't bling. As I said to Scarborough and Ridley, when we have 'Snoop Dogg Country' on MSNBC, and Young Jeezy's doing the morning drive-time show instead of Imus, then let's talk about how rappers deserve the outrage Imus brought on himself. In my opinion, hundreds of years of the racist misogyny of white men like Imus and McGuirk are far more responsible for misogynistic rap music than the reverse. And as I type this I'm thinking, is that even up for debate? Fellas, please.

phew. okay, i'm done. who wants to talk me out of eloping?

Ok I am not going to say that we he said was right because I dont agree with what he said at all. But what I dont like is how he is being made an example of for a comment where there are dozens of other shock jocks out there who say and do the same thing. It's disgusting.

Everyone knew what he was about he has insutled everyone now everyone wants to act suprised because of his comment? Its like petting a venomous snake then killing it when it bites you. People you knew he was a snake simple as that you dont like it dont listen to it.

He didnt get fired for the comments he said, he got fired because sponsors like staples and others started pulling the dollar from the show and I am sorry to tell you people this country is run by the all mighty dollar. If loosing him meant getting their money back ... guess what.

We are a Captilist nation people. Where no one cares what you have to say only how much money you can bring in.

On occasion, I watched Imus on MSNBC in the morning while getting ready for work. I found the parodies on public figures funny, and he usually has interesting guests on. I also found myself in agreement with some of his political viewpoints. I didn't watch it the day he made the comment, though.

I agree with you. (esp about the government!) He said a terribly insensitive and thoughtless thing and it is sad if he really feels that way...but we do have something called a First Amendment Right in this country...the KKK is allowed to demonstrate even though they are hate mongerers. He is obviously quite sorry and suspension for a month or two, I believe would have been amore proper punishment. I think the comment was disgusting but its a sad day when people tell you what you can and cannot say...

Actually, I heard something interesting on the radio today- that it was in part pressure by NBC employees, including Al Roker, that was at least some of the reason for all this.

I agree - we all have different opinions on this matter due to unique experiences and cultures. Many women have strong opions and obviously we have to agree to disagree but no matter what Words are strong and can cause more damage than physical harm. It is a sad situation and I think will result in changes amongst differernt communities, organizations and corporations.

I have to respectfully disagree with this comment. Though it is true that I have no idea what it is like to live as an african american in this country, I do not think Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are making a positive impact on their communities which they claim to represent. They make 'noise' by inciting and playing on people's emotions and are often falsely accusing people of doing things just to get themselves on TV. I find it hard to believe either one of them has any motive that is not a self-serving one and they can never be in the same category as civil rights pioneers. In what they call a fight for equality, they continue to draw a deeper racial divide.

Just want to respond to one thing here...
I have never ever heard Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly etc ever say anything remotely close to what Don Imus said.

'Nappy Headed Hos' is a MUCH different and worse thing than calling terrorists nasty names thay they deserve. And also calling out Congressmen/women for the hippocrites they are.

The before mentioned pundits have never in my recollection make a direct derrogatory racial slur to a group of fine citizens who certainly did not deserve it.

Don't be so anxious to jump on the 'I hate the conservative radio talk show hosts and their opinions' band wagon just because you don't like their opinions.
This is a free country and they have a right to express their opinions. What Imus did was NOT expressing his opinion, it was a FLAT OUT UNINSTIGATED AND DIGUSTING RACIAL SLUR. There's a big difference there.

AGREED!!!!!!!!

Sorry to interrupt but here is an article that nifheim posted on the 08 board. Thought some of you might be interested to read...It was written by a black man and his view on this.

Kansis City Times
Article

Imus isn’t the real bad guy
Instead of wasting time on irrelevant shock jock, black leaders need to be fighting a growing gangster culture.
By JASON WHITLOCK - Columnist

Thank you, Don Imus. You’ve given us (black people) an excuse to avoid our real problem.

You’ve given Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson another opportunity to pretend that the old fight, which is now the safe and lucrative fight, is still the most important fight in our push for true economic and social equality.

You’ve given Vivian Stringer and Rutgers the chance to hold a nationally televised recruiting celebration expertly disguised as a news conference to respond to your poor attempt at humor.

Thank you, Don Imus. You extended Black History Month to April, and we can once again wallow in victimhood, protest like it’s 1965 and delude ourselves into believing that fixing your hatred is more necessary than eradicating our self-hatred.

The bigots win again.

While we’re fixated on a bad joke cracked by an irrelevant, bad shock jock, I’m sure at least one of the marvelous young women on the Rutgers basketball team is somewhere snapping her fingers to the beat of 50 Cent’s or Snoop Dogg’s or Young Jeezy’s latest ode glorifying nappy-headed pimps and hos.

I ain’t saying Jesse, Al and Vivian are gold-diggas, but they don’t have the heart to mount a legitimate campaign against the real black-folk killas.

It is us. At this time, we are our own worst enemies. We have allowed our youths to buy into a culture (hip hop) that has been perverted, corrupted and overtaken by prison culture. The music, attitude and behavior expressed in this culture is anti-black, anti-education, demeaning, self-destructive, pro-drug dealing and violent.

Rather than confront this heinous enemy from within, we sit back and wait for someone like Imus to have a slip of the tongue and make the mistake of repeating the things we say about ourselves.

It’s embarrassing. Dave Chappelle was offered $50 million to make racially insensitive jokes about black and white people on TV. He was hailed as a genius. Black comedians routinely crack jokes about white and black people, and we all laugh out loud.

I’m no Don Imus apologist. He and his tiny companion Mike Lupica blasted me after I fell out with ESPN. Imus is a hack.

But, in my view, he didn’t do anything outside the norm for shock jocks and comedians. He also offered an apology. That should’ve been the end of this whole affair. Instead, it’s only the beginning. It’s an opportunity for Stringer, Jackson and Sharpton to step on victim platforms and elevate themselves and their agenda$.

I watched the Rutgers news conference and was ashamed.

Martin Luther King Jr. spoke for eight minutes in 1963 at the March on Washington. At the time, black people could be lynched and denied fundamental rights with little thought. With the comments of a talk-show host most of her players had never heard of before last week serving as her excuse, Vivian Stringer rambled on for 30 minutes about the amazing season her team had.

Somehow, we’re supposed to believe that the comments of a man with virtually no connection to the sports world ruined Rutgers’ wonderful season. Had a broadcaster with credibility and a platform in the sports world uttered the words Imus did, I could understand a level of outrage.

But an hourlong press conference over a man who has already apologized, already been suspended and is already insignificant is just plain intellectually dishonest. This is opportunism. This is a distraction.

In the grand scheme, Don Imus is no threat to us in general and no threat to black women in particular. If his words are so powerful and so destructive and must be rebuked so forcefully, then what should we do about the idiot rappers on BET, MTV and every black-owned radio station in the country who use words much more powerful and much more destructive?

I don’t listen or watch Imus’ show regularly. Has he at any point glorified selling crack cocaine to black women? Has he celebrated black men shooting each other randomly? Has he suggested in any way that it’s cool to be a baby-daddy rather than a husband and a parent? Does he tell his listeners that they’re suckers for pursuing education and that they’re selling out their race if they do?

When Imus does any of that, call me and I’ll get upset. Until then, he is what he is — a washed-up shock jock who is very easy to ignore when you’re not looking to be made a victim.

No. We all know where the real battleground is. We know that the gangsta rappers and their followers in the athletic world have far bigger platforms to negatively define us than some old white man with a bad radio show. There’s no money and lots of danger in that battle, so Jesse and Al are going to sit it out.

The media blew this way out.... But I believe that there have been plenty of times that I have heard BLONDE jokes being displayed on the radio, I recall hot 97 making fun , No body blew that up? Hey they even have a play in NYC called legally blonde, all making fun and ONE blonde makes it in the world... I dont know... only Caucasions can have blonde hair, so maybe I should call someone and complain about that? Ever watch the tv show the office....or how about Mad tv? Or even saturday night live. They say things all the time. Why is it that Imus gets the boot is it because its election year and hes not liberal? There has to be some other reason for this way out of proportion madness!!! Oprah is getting involved? why? and why everyone is freaking out? Dont we have men and women in the forces fighting, dying and the media is more concerned about putting 4 consecutive days of Imus coverage on the air?? We need to all relax, its not like he murdered anyone and this guy is getting butchered!!!! Most people I talk to say they actually feel bad for him, but they are scared to say it!!! . I can see it now....a new law passed that the goverment controls every little word that comes out of our mouths.....no more freedom of speech....maybe then we will all be happy.

I don't think what he said was right obviously, but I also think that this has been totally blown out of proportion and I think that way too much news time is being devoted to this - all that is going on in the world, with the war etc and the majority of news time has been covering this story. I also think that we all make mistakes and noone is perfect and I think Imus has def. realized that what he said is a big mistake and he has apologized, I don't think he shoul have been fired.

I admit, I actually do kinda feel bad for the guy. Not because of what he said, because that was definitely reprehensible...but more importantly, the way the media and public has treated it.

My opinion--good, I'm glad he was fired. Yes, I know people say that sort of thing all the time, and I know he says that sort of thing all the time. But you could say it at your job? No. And those other people that he talks about are mostly public figures. They have to expect to be attacked. These young women are some of the finest our country has to offer. And what did Imus do? No matter what they achieved, in athletics, in academics, he tried to run them down as not being worth anything because they're 1. African American (not that all of them are, even) and 2. women. We should not put up with that in this country, and I'm glad to see he was fired.
