Re: NWR- Don Imus??

I just saw this post on myspace and this is completely true and I HATE DOING THIS but it has to be done.

I have no issues to state Imus was wrong and did disrespect african americans and women but I have a issue that there is a major double standard in this country and its not just black and white it effects the double standard of what is acceptable to say and do and who gets 'punished'.

I want to state the fact that I am really feeling a bad backlash in communities comming with this. I realize in time it goes away and people go back to normal life but I am hearing people feeling pushed to keep their mouths shut in fear of being fired over taking sides in this subject. I am afraid that this seriously splitting this country apart when we need to be a union to be strong in order to get out of this mess of a war going on. We also need to analyze the fact that today people's lives are still in disarray in the south becaues of katrina and THAT is more important then some old fart saying a line to be 'edgy'.

And bringing it back to my point of posting on the 08 board - WHY CAN'T PEOPLE DISCUSS things in a college with out being accused of being racist. I HATE THIS - today the department head had to send out email not appologizing but restated it was a open discussion. (for those who didn't read my original post a kid complained over two professors discussing the case) WHY WHY WHY??? I want to put my foot through the damn door at this point because i am tired of people having to apologize over a discusion or opinion.

Today Don Imus was fired for calling the Rutgers University basketball team 'nappy headed hos'. Sure, that was inappropriate, but did the punishment fit the crime? Maybe we should look at the two guys who pushed this issue until Imus was fired.

Jesse Jackson says it's a question of morality, and what's right and what's wrong.

Just so we're clear:

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

Jesse Jackson calling Jews 'Hymies' and referring to New York as 'Hymietown' : Right. (Washington Post, 1984)

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

Jesse Jackson having an affair and Impregnating Karin Stanford, then using rainbow coalition funds to pay her $40,000 and purchasing a $365,000 house to keep her quiet: Right

Jesse Jackson not paying child support for this child, and not visiting her: Right

Jesse Jackson Saying Duke La Crosse Rape Suspects who have been aquitted 'deserved the negative attention' because they weren't acting morally by hiring a stripper: Right

I'm glad we have someone with strong moral values like Jesse Jackson to make sure nobody makes racist jokes on radio stations!

Thanks for showing us what's right and what's wrong Jesse.

And who can forget Al Sharpton, another strong moral figure who knows the power of words:

After District Attorney Steven Pagones failed to prosecute white suspects for raping a black girl (because evidence showed the story was fabricated) Al Sharpton accused Pagones Himself of raping the girl. Pagones successfully sued him for Defamation. Right

But it gets better:

Imus Calling Black Women 'nappy headed hos': Wrong.

In 1995, Sharpton led a protest in Harlem against the plans of Freddy's Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned clothing store, to expand into a black neighborhood. Sharpton told the protesters, 'We will not stand by and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business.' Three months later, an armed protester forcibly entered the store and burned it down, killing himself and seven others. Right

Thanks Jesse and Al for showing us what's right and wrong. I'm glad we can finally see the light now. I'm glad you guys stopped this guy, and all his charities for sick and homeless children, that will now dry up. Thanks guys!

Al Sharpton needs to keep his mouth shut....This guy likes nothing better than to be in the news.

As stated before...Imus has been saying this for years. This country is too sensitive and pc about everything. And if the news didn't blow the situation out of control we wouldn't be discussing this right now.

Did you know there are white girls are the team...I'm white and I have nappy hair, am I offended...no I could care less.

Can we move on please????

Yup I cant stand Sharpton.. hes nothing but trouble maker... Whats Imus said was TOTALLY wrong and TOTALLY uncalled for... However he did aplogoize and I feel he really ment it!!!! What they want him to do.. get on his knees and beg??? Its unreal! He did not deserve to be fired.. If thats the case 25% of the entertainers out there should be fired as well!

Question - Was one of the reasons Imus was cancelled was due to the fact so many corporate sponsors were pulling?

Yes, of course that's why he was fired. He was fired because his show was no longer going to be profitable if he didn't have his sponsors, and because some of the high-rankers at CBS were extremely offended and pushed for it. The corporate sponsors were afraid that they would lose money because of a boycott. Imus wasn't fired because of Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, except that they have big mouths and might have arranged for boycotts.

If anyone's offended about double standards, no one is stopping you from going out and starting your own boycotts. They're surprisingly effective. It's all about money, people.

CBS is ultimately owned by Viacom, which also owns MTV. In the last year, the company has been going through some major changes--lay-offs, restructuring, firings, etc....in an effort to raise their bottom lines. Considering their actions of late, this was a typical move for them. The company is leaning more towards the conservative now. It's a shame that a company that once had their pulse on the American public and was so forward thinking is now becoming so buttoned up.

It was a long time coming. Personally I think we could use with a little cleaning house. The language is out there, because people choose to keep it there. Celebrities normally get away with everything and it's nice to know that some are actually paying for their stupidity.

god, after reading some of the most ignorant comments ever on this thread, I have come to the conclusion that I would hate to be a black woman in Long Island. The freaking racism is oozing from the screen.

'Black people can rap about it?' ***? I didn't know all black people rap. Damn, they've been hiding that for years from me. Quit being so damn ignorant people.

Really? See, this to me presents a big problem. That term - 'racist' - is certainly not representative of what I read. At all.

It makes me wonder what qualifies someone as being a 'racist'? I don't think I read one comment (maybe there was one...but I don't recall reading one) that stated that what Imus did was excusable or anything short of wrong.

ETA: perhaps you meant that people were being ignorant, or maybe you felt that people were guilty of stereotyping... but 'racist'?

I hate seeing that term thrown around.

writiing 'black people can rap about it' is racist. also I didn't call anyone a racist. I said the racism was present. You don't have to be a racist to make a racist remark. In fact, I dont even know if I would consider Imus a racist.

But that isn't to say that white people DON'T rap about it....

I'm really not trying to be combative, but I really think that your choice of words (saying that someone is being a 'racist' for making that comment) isn't accurate at all. I guess we can agree to disagree.

I think the term may qualify as stereotyping, but not necessarily in my opinion being 'racist.'

I dunno who wrote that, and frankly I'm not in the mood to reread this long winded thread, but that quote by itself does not sound at all racist to me... and I'm a quite liberal and outspoken advocate against prejudice in all of its forms.

now, if it said 'ALL black people rap about it', sure that's would be a stereotype, which is what I believe you felt the person was implying, but that's NOT what was written.

mavirella,

I think you just overly generalized that. No one said 'black people can rap about it' (correct me if I'm wrong) Yes people referred to hip hop language when pointing out a double standard, but taken out of context anything can be viewed as r'acist.'

I think people are way too quick to pigeon hole others as being racist, simply because they don't agree and that's not right at all.

Re: NWR- Don Imus??

i dont think he should have been fired...

First, there are MANY entertainers that call women in general out of their name All the time- yet their songs are played on the radio all the time- what has been their punishment??? Platinum records!!! So now Imus says something out of order and he gets fired and then it becomes a racial thing??? I am confused.

I think he should have been suspended but not fired... if we as a society are going to be selective of who & what we reprimand then what example are we setting? None!! I am by no means saying what he said was okay, but the punishment is totally biased!!! Nonetheless, he will be back- they are not going to keep him down- if he dont get a job here in NY, he will get one somewhere else where he will make just as much or more money. The heat is on right now, so they have to 'react' according' to what they feel is in their best interest.

***Disclaimer*** This is MY OPINION, so please no one take it personal****
