NWR: How do you give someone money?

NWR: How do you give someone money?

My guy friend’s wife is from New Orleans. Her mother and brother lost everything and had to move in with them indefinitely. I have already sent money to the Red Cross, but I want to also send something to help them out, since I feel like I am helping someone that I kind of know. It's nothing big, maybe $200.

My other friends said it might be insulting to send money to my friend and his wife.
I obviously do not want to insult them or make them feel uncomfortable. Should I send a gift certificate or something?
I was thinking of sending something anonymous, what do you think?
Thanks!

I think that is a wonderful idea, why would they be insulted. I would send it annonymously and say something like ' to help you out in this time of need'

God bless you

I would do a gift card, maybe for clothes or something they need... They SHOULDN'T feel insulted if you give money, but they might. Maybe you can feel out their family for what route to take. Money, gift, gift card..

Do an Amex gift card... They will be able to use it anywhere.

I don't think you should worry about them being insulted, they have lost everything, they will be touched by your generosity. I would give them cash so they can spend it on what they need most.

I was in a situation once years ago, that myself and my first husband were financially ruined due to an illness he had that put him in the hospital for MONTHS, we actually received quite a few cash gifts, and really its what we needed. I did not feel strange about it, although I felt I can NEVER repay these people what they gave to me, I sent lots of thank you notes, and said constant thanks when I saw them. it helped us when times were at it's worst, no pride in a situation like that, you are just grateful for every little bit you do have. It's a nice gesture, your very thoughtful....you get some angel wings today

Re: NWR: How do you give someone money?

Years ago my cousin was in a serious car accident & was in the hospital, then re-hab for a while, in Kentucky.

Between medical bills & my aunt & uncle travellign down there to see him & my uncle quitting his crappy job, to stay with my couisn when he got out of re-hab, they had a lot of bills.

I don't think they ever said so, but we knew.

So, my family all chipped in & my grandmother wrote a check & just mailed it to them.

The day after she got it, my aunt called & thanked us. I thought she'd be insulted, but she really did need it. She would have refused it if she could, but she knew they needed it.

She said she couldn't repay it & my mom said it was a gift, not a loan & that was pretty much the end of it. When things were better for them, they went a little overboard with Christmas gifts, to make up for it.

So, if your friend really needs it , it I don't think he will be insulted. YOu could just write a note, saying you want to help hurricane victims & you were goign to doante it, but you figured you'd start with someone you knew.

If they say they don't need it, ask them to donate it to charity. Then they will realize you mena it & can spare the $ & if they still end up donating it, at least it went to a good cause.

I would send cash, and I would write a little note along with it, something that will make them feel comfortable with it-like 'have you ever seen the movie Pay it Forward? This is our way-we wish you all good things'

I totally agree! After 9/11 I gave a gift card to a widow for purchasing clothing for her children.

You can get an amex gift card..and they could buy what they need.

My best friend's brother lived in New Orleans at the time of Katrina. He, too, lost everything but it was from looting, not the water. We wanted to help him out so I sent an Amex gift card for his sister to forward to him. He appreciated the sentiment alot because it showed that people really did care. I would only be anonymous if you knew for certain these people would feel strange about it.

I agree. It's nice to know people think of you in times of need. A Visa Check Card would be a great idea..they can use it to buy whatever they need. It's very thoughtful of you.

If you are sending this to New Orleans, send cash (certified mail) with a card. I am not sure what the banking situation is like in New Orleans and if people even had there ID to cash a check.

My friend' from work is from New Orleans and her family was trapped for a long time and some were missing. Thankfully everyone was located and found alive. Many of them are staying in Atlanta with her twin sister.

My friend refused to take money from us to send to her family so personal checks and gift certificates (and cash) were sent to her sister directly. The company also sent sleeping bags, luggage, water and clothes. My friend was a bit shocked since some of the company heads sent expensive things like designer clothes and such. They really did appreciate every single thing so sending money will not insult them.

Commerce Bank has VISA gift cards. THere's no fee and it comes with a cute card. You have to have an account there though.
