NWR: Insane realization...

Governor Cuomo's salary is around $179k....the superintendent's salary at my school is $242k. Why does this not seem right???

Whoa!! People need to stop blaming teachers for getting paid too much! I'm not even sure what the Superintendent actually DOES.
I just saw on the news that Baldwin is closing two elem schools

It's so sad because I was a teacher in NYC and got laid off and then I started working for the courts and there were layoffs twice since I've been there (I've only been working there for 1 year). No one ever thinks to cut the superintendents salaries to save jobs! Also, working in the courts people blame teachers for having such high salaries and summers off blah blah blah!

What court did you work in? What did you do? I scored my dream job in court and got laid off seven months later! Waiting for things to get better...

I hate when people say anything about teacher salaries. I had been in an argument last summer with someone over it! He was like well you're overpaid & do nothing... wait what?! I looked at him & was like I'm a teacher - which means I'm a nurse, therapist, mommy, custodian, and all around multi-job person. So I then asked him what he did, it was something in a union (want to say plumber or something). I'm like so you're telling me I get paid too much?! Look at what you make compared to what I make! I'm a parochial school teacher, so I make very little compared to public school teachers - but even public school teachers do not make enough! It's insane that people think teachers are overpaid and do nothing...

sorry for the rant - it took me almost 4 years to get a job out of college and I cannot stand how much teachers get s*** on.

high salaries?!?!?
I'm not even going to get fully into it, but some people with higher paying jobs have less stress and they don't take their jobs home with them! most people aren't going home thinking about their clients who are hungry, homeless, tired, etc!
PS-most teachers have a summer job-school, camp, etc to compensate for the thousands of $$$$ spent during the year to maintain their room/supplied BOOOOO to the teacher haters!!!

Let's face it -
Cuomo, school administrators and school teachers all have high salaries.

It's insane that a school district administrator has a higher salary that Gov. Cuomo.

I'm not going to e one screaming about how school teachers are overpaid, however I don't think they are hurting either. In many districts the first-year, no experience pay is mid-30s to 40s depending on their level of education.

Also, I know for a fact teachers can be paid upwards of $30 to $40 an hour to proctor an exam. Not teach, not grade, but hand out the exams, read the rules form the packet, keep a timer and an eye out for cheating.

Let's be honest, I'm not going to scream about teachers being overpaid for their normal hours in a classroom as they have a difficult job. But, they do have a salary and benefits that is far better than your average taxpayer with a similar education. Check the annual American Community Sureys and census.

its the same thing as cops and firemen... people say oh your FH is FDNY he must make bank... sorry but HALF of his paycheck is gone to taxes (state & city!)

Why are people even questioning how much someone gets paid?! we all had the option to take the job if we wanted to.. some choose not to teach, but DONT complain about how much the salaries are.

while we are at it, lets complain abotu how much TV personalities, or Sports pro's, or VP exec get paid.

Its amazing how many people think others get paid too much, yet all they want is a high paying job

EDit: to say I am agreeing w the OP that we shouldnt question a teachers salary i think its ridic that the super is paid that much, and teachers who are the backbone of education are not

This gives me hope because I graduated in '08 with a teaching degree and only used it for one year because I had to leave since it was only part time. I like my job a lot now but it pays less than teaching and I'd still like to teach someday if possible.
However, I teach music so I may have to realize that I'll be teaching private lessons instead with the way school economies are now!

love this.

My FH just started working at my public school this year because they released the hiring freeze for English - it was a huge shock to him because he had only ever attended and taught in private schools. I have so much respect for you, because the amount of money he was making was just pitiful and that was in Westchester!! Even when he started grad school they told him he wouldn't get paid anymore for a long, long time and other degrees wouldn't matter. To be able to listen to all the teacher bashing in our society AND work where you do? Awesome job, jess!!

I think you are horribly mistaken to compare a NYS governor, superintenden and teachers to TV personalities, Sports pros of Vice presidents of companies.

There is a HUGE difference you are overlooking.

TV personalities, Sports pros, CEOs and vice presidents - Private employees. Their salary is from a company who is taking it out of their earnings. A Billionaire can spend whatever money he wants to hiring a sports pro to play for his team, in hopes of raising ticket prices and getting a larger crowd. It's a Private company. What he does with his money is his business.

Government officials, Police, Superintendents and teacher - Public employees. Their salary comes out of my salary. We as taxpayers, pay them. They (are supposed) to work for us, the public. We have a direct vote on their salary every year - it's called a budget vote.

So yes - the public has a right to have a say and debate on teachers' salary. Don't like it, then don't become a public employee.

When you purchase a house, condo - you'll find out that something like 75% of your taxes or more is a combination of school district taxes and state taxes.

Oh wait - Long Island has such high taxes - that's due to school districts. Most school districts, 75 percent or more of the budget is spent on teachers.

So being realistic - your average teacher makes 2-3x the average salary. People get upset, wondering why they are going bankrupt paying for a teacher's salary - especially when unemployment is high, they are out of job, don't have money and private company employees aren't getting raises..

but Government officials and teachers are? Why?

It's a good question. Why does any job deserve a raise just for being there? That's not how it is in most of the private sector, why is that he case in public?

That's what people are questioning. Why do you get a 2-4 percent year-to-year increase plus a step increase, just for being there as a teacher/superintendent?

They also get mad when government officials can vote themselves a raise, without any say from taxpayers.

Or CEOS take government bailouts (public money) then use it to give themselves a $1, $2, $3 million bonus.

Personally - I don't have a problem with teachers, except those who claim they are underpaid. Many people in the public sector have far less benefits, much lower salaries, and many times are salaried so they don't get overtime. Also, they are lucky to get holidays or vacations.

Teachers have it good - its why we have a surplus of them. There's such a high salary, so many benefits, pension, and guaranteed raises that our generation was taught

If you want to be rich, be a teacher. If you want ot have a great job and ots of time off - be a teacher.

Now many are sadly having to move off LI to find jobs elsewhere, in order to work as a teacher.

I don't mind - just don't complain to someone who knows your salary what you are making. You aren't poor compared to the average.

Not all teachers do. Even speaking only in terms of LI teachers, the district I was in as a student forfeited their rights to any potential raises, increases, or otherwise last year because the faculty felt it was more important to remain a cohesive group - and not fire anyone - than to have massive amounts of layoffs which would negatively affect the students.

True - many district did take some kind of cut, rather than layoff. I'm not sure what your situation is, but the district I know most about gave up their step increases...

Temporarily.

I believe this was the right move. They realized taxpayers couldn't afford it, and like many employees, didn't get a raise last year.

But for the district I know most about - it was temporary. They will get that raise retro, then raises are instituted again.

I just want to say you make lots of good points.
I went into teaching knowing I would make pretty good money and now as a taxpayer I definitely feel it in taxes. I don't think teachers should be underpaid, but the upper level people in education... well maybe we should take a look at that because taxes are CRAZY.
Going into teaching, you should be aware that you ARE a public servant and you don't do it to become rich (hopefully)!
As with anything, there should be a nice balance, right? Let's thank our public employees and not let them be poor but we can't go broke supporting them either.

You're kidding right?! I have a Master's Degree and make about $30,000 a year BEFORE taxes are taken out. Rich my @$$! I barely make enough to cover ALL my bills. I CHOSE to be a teacher because I love working with kids - and I love what I do. But don't, under ANY circumstances act like I have it easy. I have kids that are not only dealing with the stresses of school but peer pressure and home issues as well. I don't just 'hand out a test' or any of that BS - I WORK WITH MY KIDS, I HELP THEM UNDERSTAND.

Things like THIS are why I can't stand our society. Don't talk about my job like you know - because you obviously has no idea what goes into being a teacher - THE TIME, WORK, and EFFORT. I bring home things constantly to do or grade AND I spent $1000 of MY OWN money (was not reimbursed) on my classroom BEFORE school even started. Don't tell me under ANY circumstances that I have it easy and that I'm rich.
