NWR: Insane realization...

You're kidding right?! I have a Master's Degree and make about $30,000 a year BEFORE taxes are taken out. Rich my @$$! I barely make enough to cover ALL my bills. I CHOSE to be a teacher because I love working with kids - and I love what I do. But don't, under ANY circumstances act like I have it easy. I have kids that are not only dealing with the stresses of school but peer pressure and home issues as well. I don't just 'hand out a test' or any of that BS - I WORK WITH MY KIDS, I HELP THEM UNDERSTAND.

Things like THIS are why I can't stand our society. Don't talk about my job like you know - because you obviously has no idea what goes into being a teacher - THE TIME, WORK, and EFFORT. I bring home things constantly to do or grade AND I spent $1000 of MY OWN money (was not reimbursed) on my classroom BEFORE school even started. Don't tell me under ANY circumstances that I have it easy and that I'm rich.

Teachers have it good - its why we have a surplus of them. There's such a high salary, so many benefits, pension, and guaranteed raises that our generation was taught

If you want to be rich, be a teacher. If you want ot have a great job and ots of time off - be a teacher.

Now many are sadly having to move off LI to find jobs elsewhere, in order to work as a teacher.

I don't mind - just don't complain to someone who knows your salary what you are making. You aren't poor compared to the average.

Because unfortunately, parochial school teachers don't get paid out of taxes... believe me I KNOW I did it! You do the same work and get paid much less I don't think public school teachers are overpaid, I just don't think they do that badly, but I also think they deserve it.
I'm not arguing, since you didn't respond to me in this quote, just pointing out that public school teachers get paid from a different source. People really don't realize what goes into being a teacher... they should definitely be thanked

I hate when people say anything about teacher salaries. I had been in an argument last summer with someone over it! He was like well you're overpaid & do nothing... wait what?! I looked at him & was like I'm a teacher - which means I'm a nurse, therapist, mommy, custodian, and all around multi-job person. So I then asked him what he did, it was something in a union (want to say plumber or something). I'm like so you're telling me I get paid too much?! Look at what you make compared to what I make! I'm a parochial school teacher, so I make very little compared to public school teachers - but even public school teachers do not make enough! It's insane that people think teachers are overpaid and do nothing...

sorry for the rant - it took me almost 4 years to get a job out of college and I cannot stand how much teachers get s*** on.

love this.

My FH just started working at my public school this year because they released the hiring freeze for English - it was a huge shock to him because he had only ever attended and taught in private schools. I have so much respect for you, because the amount of money he was making was just pitiful and that was in Westchester!! Even when he started grad school they told him he wouldn't get paid anymore for a long, long time and other degrees wouldn't matter. To be able to listen to all the teacher bashing in our society AND work where you do? Awesome job, jess!!

Thank you! People need to learn to respect teachers. Where the heck would you be without them. It is probably my biggest pet peeve. Hence the above rant

My parents were both teachers and my dad was annoyed but my mom was FURIOUS that I majored in education. The bureaucracy of school politics was one reason, but also due to the insane amount of criticism foisted upon us by the public. I'm happy knowing that I love what I do and don't need to constantly validate myself by checking the pay scales of other professions.

Haha I know, I just didn't want you to think that!
I think it's so sad and such a problem... my subject area is being cut all over the place because schools can't afford it and people can't afford to pay more It's so bad for the kids right now and it has to be fixed somewhere ... but it's going on all over the country too.

It does stink! You teach music you said right? Kids need those programs so much! And people don't think anything of cutting 'unnecessary programs'. It's insane that people expect SO MUCH of teachers, but don't think twice about cutting programs and funding - which is why we have 30+ kids in a class and no extracurricular. It's just sad.

To advocate for children with special needs- sometimes the only area where they do excel or have confidence IS the arts, music, etc. No kid should lose out on those! I am so disgusted by our school system and its failures

Yep, music!
Ahh I can't even START with classes with 30+ kids! (besides band or orchestra or chorus). I subbed for a year at a school with that big of a class and OMG I don't know how they did it PLUS they didn't rehire any teachers that left for the next year sooo... classes were very large

Why do you get a 2-4 percent year-to-year increase plus a step increase, just for being there as a teacher/superintendent?

Not all teachers do. Even speaking only in terms of LI teachers, the district I was in as a student forfeited their rights to any potential raises, increases, or otherwise last year because the faculty felt it was more important to remain a cohesive group - and not fire anyone - than to have massive amounts of layoffs which would negatively affect the students.

Re: NWR: Insane realization...

As a mother, and as a professional that leans on school districts daily to do her job, I think this is ludicrous! I have always viewed those persons my child spends the day with as a 'parent'. We trust you have to have w these people is incredible. They are shaping your childs life; and to each child an educator shapes their world. Our children deserve to have the best of the best teaching them and for children who are being abused at home a teacher recognizing that something is off in a student mint be that students only way out of the chaos.

Arts and music are the ground that saves some of youth from the streets and gang life. Each of the districts on long island now needs to worry about this combined w drugs and alcohol in schools. The person at the top of a district needs to ensure all policies are running smoothly and are being adhered to.

I think when you are a homeowner and a parent you will view this differently. I too am an employee who should be getting a 2% pay increase and a step each year; and I literally save children in my role; I make peauts compared to both of these professionals; should I not get my pay raises bc I am less deserving?

I distinctly remember mtg w my advisor in college and choosing my profession; the same was available to everyone else.

To our engaged educators on this site, from each parent that has never taken the time to thank you for the impact and help you have provided for their child, I thank you for making a difference!

WHAT TEACHERS MAKE

A poem by: Taylor Mali

The dinner guests were sitting around the table
discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain
the problem with education. He argued:
'What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided
his best option in life was to become a teacher?'

He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true
what they say about teachers: 'Those who can...do.
Those who can't ... teach.'

To corroborate, he said to another guest: 'You're a
teacher, Susan,' he said. 'Be honest. What do you
make?'

Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness,
replied, 'You want to know what I make?'

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they
could. I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal
of Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face if the
student did not do his or her very best.'

'I can make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall
in absolute silence.'

'I can make parents tremble in fear when I call home'

'You want to know what I make?'

'I make kids wonder.'

'I make them question.'

'I make them criticize.'

'I make them apologize and mean it.'

'I make them write.'

'I make them read, read, read.'

'I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely
beautiful, and definitely beautiful over and over and
over again, until they will never misspell either one
of those words again.'

'I make them show all their work in math and hide it
all on their final drafts in English.'

'I make them understand that if you have the brains,
then follow your heart...and if someone ever tries to
judge you by what you make, you pay them no
attention!'

'You want to know what I make?'

'I make a difference.'

'And you? What do you make?'

My FH is an art teacher, the whole reason i dont have the ring yet is because he lost a huge part of his job this year is only part time and probably will not have a job in his school district at all next year. It makes me so angry to see him struggle and become so depressed and then hear someone say teachers make too much money. Newsday is notorious for being anti-teacher. His boss makes over 200k and does NOTHING for him. This guy just sits behind a desk all day and doesn't do ****. UGH I feel for all you teachers out there its a rough gig. God bless you for doing it i do not have the paitence!
