NWR: Job Hunt Rant

NWR: Job Hunt Rant

Ok, so all summer I have been going to teaching interviews. I have gotten through to the last level of interviews 3 times! Basically it appears I am not getting the job only because I am fresh out of school and my competition has a few years experience (they were excessed from their job due to the economy, etc.). My question is:
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET EXPERIENCE IF NONE OF YOU WILL HIRE ME!!

ETA: sorry, just needed to vent. (Fixed my angry/emotional typo too. Lol)

I had a similar rant last wk..just graduated in May and having trouble finding something...However I kept applying and asking around and I finally had an interview today, and it was kind if a big one...so DONT GIVE UP!

Also my cousin is having the same problem in the teaching field too. It's a hard time but you just have to keep at it and try to find connections because it seems to be the only way to get your foot in the door right now.

FH has been interviewing since last March (school closed, he was excessed) but hang in there, he recently had 2 offers even though it is late!

Although many teachers were excessed thanks to budget cuts, you have an advantage...they're too expensive and he's lost a few interviews because they took new grads who they could place on Step 1.

Keep interviewing, he probably went on like 30 interviews with all the call backs and stuff! Even if you're fresh out of school, mention things that make you stand out and are relevant experience!

I was just thinking, didn't I just write the same thing to someone about 2 days ago??

Good luck!

Re: NWR: Job Hunt Rant

Im so sorry

This happened to me when I was looking for LI jobs only.... I then realized that in order to get the experience I had to go into the city. I did, and will start my 4th year in BK. I hope after one more year that maybe I can get in on LI... the competition is tough- then its like if you have too much experience and your masters they have to pay you more and then dont want you...go figure

don't give up. i know it's stressful. I had the same problem when I first graduated. I would go on interviews and lose out to people with more experience. I subbed for 2 years and thought that would help me get into a district, but that didn't work. 2 years ago i went and interviewed at a school in the south bronx...i got the job a week before school started....it was the worst experience of my life, but i took it because it gave me my own classroom. i landed a job on long island 3 days before school started last year and it was all thanks to my miserable experience in the bronx. i know that's probably not what you wanted to hear, but trying to find a teaching job is not easy. a lot of times it is all who you know.

That always boggles my mind too. Fortunately I got my experience while I was still in High School but not everyone gets that opportunities.

I am sorry you are having this issue though. Keep trying it will all work out!

A great way to get in the door is to be a leave replacement or a substitute teacher in a school district that you are interested in. I know that you probably want permanent full-time.. but it worked for a friend of mine.. got her foot in the door.. and a year of being a full-time sub.. she now has her own class.

Try to sub at as many districts as possible. Eventually something will open up for you. Just make as many contacts as possible in the meantime.

Thanks for the advice girls!

I think it is particularly bad right now. I have been interviewing for part time positions (there arn't really any full time ones out there). Also, I am in the new teacher finder on teachnyc's website. I received an e-mail from them over the summer stating that they are only hiring from within. I get alerts when there are new positions, but the majority of them do say hiring from within.

I may just have to wait a year. Or maybe someone will leave unexpectedly somewhere. We'll see. Thanks for the words of encouragement though!

Re: NWR: Job Hunt Rant

I graduated May 2008 and had a really really hard time getting a job without a masters and without any experience.

I was so frustrated when I called after my last interview I practically threw a hissy fit. I flat out asked 'how am I supposed to get a job without experience if no one will hire me? you work in the field, what would YOU do?' and the guy was cracking up (yeah real funny). Basically said I should go for my masters because that will give me an advantage and hopefully get an unpaid internship through the school so I can get experience that way.

Well now I AM getting my masters.. starting next week but not in the field anymore lol I got fed up and am moving on..

Also did I mention I have a decent paying job... working in a BANK. not even CLOSE to what I got a degree in.

ITA!! I worked in a district for a year as a perm. sub and was told that they never hire their subs. I told them at the end of that year I wasn't coming back, even though I didn't have a job. Got a perm. sub job in another district for the next school year, got it the week before school started. After 2 1/2 months a leave opened up and I was there for the rest of the year. Long story short, I got my foot in the door and they gave me my own class last year.
So don't give up because it WILL happen! Start subbing and you'll quickly realize who is going to hire and who isn't.
Just another side-note. Do you happen to speak Spanish? If so go for your bilingual extension or if you don't I would highly consider getting a certification in ESL. I just did it in 5 classes.
FM me if you want details or just need someone to vent to

UGH I cant stand that at ALL, the only way in teaching I realized is if you start as a sub/for someone on like materity leave and then make your way into it.

The city is hiring outside if they are in need bi lingual, special ed. The new small schools in the city can hire new teachers I believe. These are schools that closed down and reopened mini small schools in the building. The city just put the hiring freeze this year. when teachers get excessed in the city they still get paid but have to report to work everyday, basically as a sub. Hang in there, hopefully the city will hire new teachers next year, but definitely look into the 'new small schools' on NYC DOE website and email the principal directly...they do the hiring.

Hang in there...I totally agree and I went through the exact same thing 5 years ago. They want you to have experience, but you can't get experience if they won't hire you!
Things work out for a reason though...I actually met my FH at work! We teach in the same school. Just hang in there and things will work out!
