NWR: so discouraged

NWR: so discouraged

I am due to graduate (and defend my PhD thesis) on March 20th. For the last few weeks I have been frantically applying for jobs. I have applied to over 20 jobs and haven't heard anything! I feel like I have spent the last 10 years in school for nothing.
I know the economy is crappy, but some of the companies I am applying to have 20-30 jobs listed on monster every day. Luckily my thesis advisor has said she will keep me on if need be till May, however I really have had enough of working for her for the last 6 years. Plus I am not sure I can collect unemployment, as I don't know if the stipend I receive is considered pay. And with the wedding coming up I certainly can't afford to not be working. Sorry to vent but this *****!

Oh...that stinks. Its never a good feeling when you put yourself through all of this schooling to struggle looking for a job.....hang in there.... I am a firm believer in things happening for a reason and it will work out....but vent away for now...we are here to listen!

Dont worry! Something will come up. I know the economy has something to do with it. And my friend also told me that it took her months to get a call back from a job after she put it on monster. You did not go to school for nothing! You have just made a great accomplishment! Congrats to you!!

I know how you feel though, there is hardly anything out there in the biomedical field right now. Even big pharma is laying people off :( Have you thought about just doing a traditional postdoc? A lot of people have told me that its a good 'holding pattern' until something you really want comes around

ETA- Good luck with the defense! I'll be rooting for you!

Thats the direction I am starting to go in. I didn't really want to do a postdoc, because I don't want to stay in academia, but it looks like I might have to.
